Let Amish bury their kids in peace - Why the protesters??? - Does anybody know why there are going to be protesters at the funerals for the Amish kids? While I do have issues with how some Amish seem to pick and choose which modern convenience to use, and profiting of their image/religion (against their religion) - for the most part, the Amish are a gentle, non-violent society that shuns the media, and having their pictures taken. I think it's disqusting how the media is creeping about trying to take their photographs, and film them. I heard that the media helocopters interfered with the landing of the life flight as well. But what angers me most, is that there will be a group picketing the funerals, and I have yet to hear "WHY"??? What is their gripe that they'd violate a funeral for?

Fear of Flying - Anyone here have a fear of flying? I'm particularly interested in those that may have licked these fears. If so, what did you do that helped? My girlfriend has a job that will require her (and therefore, me) to fly from time to time. Truth is, I hate it. It's not so much the flying part, but the dying. But I'm going to try to overcome it. I've already tried the getting drunk part, and took a seditive also. But the adrenaline easily overcame the effects. Any advice?

Evolution, Intelligent Design, Or What? - The title of this message thread is the same as that of the August 29, 2006 entry on my blog.
It now appears that The Blade has finally caught up on reporting this controversial and polarizing issue.
What do you think? Does the teaching of evolution belong in our public schools? What about intelligent design or creationism? Why or why not? If so, should the subject matter be part of the science curriculum or in some other curriculum?

Another attempt to teach Flying Spaghetti Monsterism in Ohio Schools - CINCINNATI - Americans who question evolution are testing a new tactic in Ohio, arguing that schools should be required to discuss all controversial issues from creation to stem cell research and global warming. - More>>

J'Accuse! (And That's Enough.) - Apparently, Ohio now needs to feel even more safe -- so safe that the standards of legal proof against accused sex offenders could be lowered so that they will fall outside what was before considered, er, legal ... to wit: "An Ohio legislative panel yesterday rubber-stamped an unprecedented process that would allow sex offenders to be publicly identified and tracked even if they've never been charged with a crime. [...] The person's name, address, and photograph would be placed on a new Internet database and the person would be subjected to the same registration and community notification requirements and restrictions on where he could live." Who needs trials, anyway? They're so messy, expensive, and most of all -- uncertain!

Owner of Woodville may raze???!???? - Why?????? We've got Levis Commons and soon-to-be Fallen Timbers, and the soon-to-be modified Southwyck and now this?????? Why oh why! If the owner would just do their homework and understand the demand of the market and maintain the mall to its finest form, the mall would do just fine. I like indoor malls regardless of the season, with Elder Beerman, Sears, and Anderson's they all seem to do fine in business. The problem is lack of focus on the smaller retail, needs to upgrade their parking lots (lots of stones and potholes) and needs to update their movie theatre to compete with other state-of-the-art facilities around the region. Perhaps adding stores Steve & Barry's, Marshalls, Border's, Rite Aid, some restaurants, and Best Buy (yes we need one for the eastern region of NW Ohio) would help fill up in between the anchor stores and make this mall viable to the local communities (East Toledo, Oregon, Northwood, Lake Twp., Millbury, Walbridge, western Ottawa County, and northwestern Sandusky County.) To look at the market number, between those communities the population is nearly 140,000.

Nookular mornings - "WXUT's fall schedule just came out, and "The Nookular Option" is moving to the morning drive-time slot, 6-8AM. Also,we'll be on at least two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday, for sure). Toledo has no liberal talk radio, and I'd like to fill that gap. So, going into the fall campaign season, you'll be hearing a hot-rodded "Nookular Option". Look forward to more great guests, political commentary, and comedy bits."

Auto Repair question - electric system - My wife's car is having some electrical problems. You can get it started if you play with it, but any time you do anything electrical, ie turn on or off the headlights, use the turn signals, etc, it shuts off. AND when it's shut off, you cannot put it in gear! - More>>

Compare this attitude to Wal-Mart with Toledo's response to Wal-Mart - I found this today on the (Nashville) Tennessean website. To me this highlights the difference between the "new" economy of most of the country and the "old" economy of the Rust Belt. Instead of picketing Wal-Mart the Democratic governor has instead embraced them as an integral component of their economy and is working to make them a better-run company. This plan will lead to higher paying jobs for hundreds or thousands of community college students. - More>>

Arti Gras performers needed - In conjunction with this September's Artomatic 419 event: "On Saturday, September 2nd from 12:00pm to 6:00pm, in association with The Uptown Association and the Adams Amble, there will be a huge block party spanning several blocks of Adams Street with bands, balloons, food, art, fun, games and a great time for all! Toledo does not have a “no holds barred” festival on a par with some of the inspired lunacy of other cities (Mardi Gras, Philly’s Mummers Parade, Pasadena’s Doo Dah Parade and San Francisco’s Bay-to-Breakers.) This is a chance to cut loose and have one last burst of summer as the season draws to a close. This is a real chance to 'let your freak flag fly'." - More>>

Banning Cleavage - For those who care at all, an aside note-I just saw on TV that in some town in Texas, the school system there has banned cleavage. That's right. No female will be allowed to attend that has more than four inches of skin from the base of the neck showing. Too bad they're not as concerned about teaching them to read, write, and show respect and speak proper english any more. But then,Like I've always said...it's all a matter of priorities.

A Smart Idea... at leat i think so... - Okay, well here is an idea for school funding. Sales tax is currently 6.75% correct? Well, let's raise it too 7%. That is still lower than the 7.25% A year ago or whatever. That .25% generated in Lucas County will go towards the schools. For example if you shop at your neighborhood Kroger, that .25% sales tax would go to your schools system, And anyone who shops at that store would be supporting your schools and likewise if you shop in other areas of the county. If you shop in Maumee at Andersons, your support Maummee Schools, If you shop at Walmart on Glendale, your supporting Toledo Schools. I think this idea might help the pocket book when it comes to property taxes, and honestly when you are shopping would you notice an extra .25% on your sales tax? Probably not. I think we should explore this idea. What do you all think?

Know of any fun drives? - What are some fun roads to drive? By fun I mean, curvy, hilly, and not a lot of cops! It is a lot of fun to drive those kinds of roads, but I only know of a few. West River Road on the south side of the river from Waterville to Napoleon is one of my favorites as well as State Route 105 from Elmore to Oak Harbor along the Portage River.
