New version of Toledo Talk

You Tube - Go to You Tube and search Toledo, Ohio. It's sad that the first/majority of the videos deal with race riots and other embassing moments. I know the Port Authority has a positive Toledo video on their website. They should post it on You Tube. The city also should have many positive Toledo videos. Post them too. Image is everything and with the number of people that log onto You Tube, this is a site Toledo should flood with positive images. - More>>

Blackwater USA: War-profiteer - "Family connections helped. As brother to former Michigan GOP chairwoman Betsy DeVos and brother-in-law to her husband, 2006 GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos, Prince had access to Capitol Hill power brokers. Blackwater was originally slated to be paid $229.5 million for five years, according to a State Department contract list. Yet as of June 30 [2006], just two years into the program, it had been paid a total of $321,715,794. Blackwater USA is a private military contractor offering "tactical training," firing range and target systems, and security consulting."

More Garbage - Just when you’ve heard enough about Garbage, try this deal on for size! In a Mesa, Arizona paper was an ad from Arizona Sanitation Services, it said, sign up before April 30, get one month FREE. What do you get, well how about twice weekly service on Wed. & Sat. They provide the can, there are No Hidden Costs-No fuel surcharges, taxes or delivery costs. The area that is a County Island and not part of the city are private pay. And a 5% discount for Yearly Pay and all this will only cost $13.50 per month. Toledo taxes us, we buy our own cans, get service once a week and only bi-weekly for the recycling pick-up. Plus Toledo has 3 people for every truck, Az. only has the Driver, it’s all automatic. Sure is enough to make one wonder how the City of Toledo does business!

I'm all for guns, but this a bit much. - Help me out here… I consider myself a liberal libertarian in my political leanings. I believe Americans have the right to own guns for hunting, personal defense or simply because they want to. - More>>

SmokeChoke: Ohio Smoking Ban Violator Registry - A couple weeks ago, I was sitting in Brewed Awakenings trying to enjoy a cup of coffee, but there was a lady chain smoking in the other room using an ashtray provided by Brewed. It struck me that an online registry of smoking ban violators would be helpful to avoid situations like that. - More>>

Blue Angels - How sad to hear of the tragic accident involving the Blue Angels. What I didn’t really see is any emphasis on the fact that it crashed in a residential neighborhood. The folks living there were going about their everyday business when it happened. It’s a miracle that no one else was killed. - More>>

I can't believe how much the IRS took from me. - Like many of us, I spent this week getting my taxes finished up. The Kalamazoo Promise - The downturn in manufacturing and consolidation in the drug industry have hit Kalamazoo, Michigan. Hard. Now the city is mobilizing local wealth to make investments for the future. Southwest Michigan First, an economic-development group, has raised a $50 million venture fund expressly for financing life-sciences startups. The same group has rallied local resources to keep Western Michigan University's engineering school in town. Then there's the Kalamazoo Promise, a program funded by anonymous area donors that gives full college scholarships to every child who attends city schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. This year, it boosted enrollment by nearly 1,000 kids, which even heated up the housing market. Now other cities are calling to find out how they can replicate Kalamazoo's "community capitalism." "They all think there's some magic pill or angle," says Southwest Michigan First CEO Ron Kitchens. "It's money."
