Need help with my router, please

In all actuality, you may need some type of "reset" to get it to go back to default settings. Depending on the model, there's probably a button in the back that you'll have to hold down for a while.

(That's the easiest path. If you're going through settings, you can probably do some sort of release/renew with their DHCP server.)

Releasing and renewing the DCHP will not work. Go to your network settings and simply remove Buckeye as a primary source. Once it's removed, it will pick up WiFi by default.

Go to Control Panel. Click on Network and Internet. Select Network and Sharing Center. On the left side pane, click on Manage Networks. Highlights Buckeye service, RIGHT-click on it and select, "Remove Network."

wishin, do I have to do this for all 3 computers or just one? I don't need it for the puters, just want to the router to broadcast wifi to the house so the kids can use it on their iphones. will this do it? thx.

Mr.C, that's what I was thinking (the button, not the drinking), but wasn't sure what it all involved. I have to be able to sign in for work tomorrow on the one computer, dont want to screw anything up. :)

Well, you could go into the router itself by bringing up a webpage and typing in 192.168.0.1 and hitting 'enter.' Once there, check all the pages for anything relating to Buckeye and try removing it. Unfortunately, I do not have a Linksys router anymore so I cannot log onto it and look for myself.

yeah, I don't see anything you mentioned under control panel, did you mean for 7? this is an XP machine. so if there is a reset button on the back, would just pushing that work? If I do that and still cant get the wifi going, it's not going to mess up the ports, is it?

If you go to 192.261.0.1, you can select "reset to default." That will wipe any entries previously there. Once you turn it back on, it will pick up the new service too. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, on the back of the router, there is a reset button that MrC was talking about. You'll need the tip of a paperclip (or something similar) to press it. If you choose this route, do it will it is still turned on. After pressing the reset button, unplug all the cables, let it set for a few minutes before plugging everything back in and turning it back on.

Your question is a bit ambiguous, but let me try to assist as best I can. Feel free to contact me at my office anytime with questions.

First, internet connectivity. Are you able to access the internet? I'm hoping and assuming your answer is yes. Buckeye and Time Warner (both cable internet) use the same wide area network (WAN) settings - dynamic. Moving from one house to another should allow you to plug the router in at the new location, and access the internet without any changes.

Second, wireless connectivity. From your question, it sounds like you disabled the wireless network when you originally setup the router at your old residence, but now would like to turn it on. Wishiniwasfishing has the right scheme to try and remedy that problem, except I suspect his address is incorrect. The default address for linksys routers is 192.168.1.1. The default username and password is admin/admin or admin/password.

If you're able to access your router's configuration page using the above address and password, you will be able to change your wireless settings to enable your network.

If not, you may be typing in the wrong address. Follow the steps here to find your default gateway address, and then use that instead. http://kb.iu.edu/data/ajfx.html

Otherwise, you may have changed your password originally and will need to do what is called a "hard reset" of your router - resetting it to the factory default settings. Each router is different for this, so you'll need to consult your router manual. You can also download a manual online at www.linksys.com.

Hi, Chris, thanks for jumping in. Yes, I am on the net, have never had a problem with that, the router works fine with cables.

I did not disable the wireless, I just unplugged the router and brought it here and plugged it in and plugged the cables into it. I was using the wireless at the other house due to the router being in the basement and the work computer being on the third floor and it worked just fine. I never reset the wireless part at the new house because I never needed it until this week so it's still looking to connect with Buckeye.

What I'm looking for is a house-cleaning reset, so I will try what you have all suggested...push da button! altho maybe not tonite, it's under the desk and I'm tired, lol. :) thanks!

just for giggles I tried 192.168.1.1., and neither admin/admin nor admin/password work.

what model?

unplug it for 30 seconds, hold in reset button and plug it in holding reset button for 30 seconds, and then release reset and let it go for 30 seconds, and then unplug it again for 30 seconds and plug it back in.

should be back to defaults in 192.168.1.1 and if I recall linksys default login is a blank username with password admin.

be sure to chase up the lastest firmware for it too after you get it reset.

also need to reset your cablemodem if you are using a direct cable modem to PC connection and you decide to plug your router into the cablemodem and PC into router. you'll have problems unless you reset your cablemodem after plugging a different device into it.

on the 192.186.1.1 page, if u haven't changed it the default is only entered in one of the 2 boxes. the bottom, i think. so try admin as the password and leave the leave the top box blank.

i dont use the Linksys router any longer when i got this new d-link

AC, model is WRT54G2, it's about 3 years old. thanks for the reminder about the firmware, will do. its set up with the pc's into the router and the router into the modem now, so shouldn't have to reset the modem, right?

Linksys use to be my favorite but after the WRT54G lines they started getting more and more buggy. Been trying out Netgear and D-link lately, none seem as good as the first 4 versions of the WRT54G. Still have mine at home running DD-WRT after 5 years with no problems.

yah, I've had no problem with this at all, worked right out of the box and never stopped, so glad to hear I can continue to not expect any. Unless I cause one. :p
