Hey Guys,
I don't post often; frankly I'm always hesitiant because than the flood gates open for "you are a fat/no talent/need to be in jail/judge shoud be recalled/he should be ran out of town and never work again/piece of shit" or thoughts similar...and I'm not saying that any and/or all of that isn't true.
But I have to help out this restaurant, which has aboslutely no affiliation to me I promise, and I'm not a good liar (I have the rap sheet to prove it).
But I was waling out of Wal Mart on Glendale today and I past a guy who was going in with a shirt that had the name of a taqueria...you don't see that word arond here very often so I stop him and asked where the place was.
He said he owned it and it was around the corner. It was lunch time; I was hungry, as usual, so I headed over there. His wife was in the car waiting for him to open and we started talking.
What great people!
I'm not sure what the family was doing before but a few month's ago the pastor from the church sai: Robert, you need to open a mexican restaruant.
Robert said he didn't have any money. So the pastor gave him a restaurant right next door to the church that I guess the church owned.
He went home and told his wife, Robin, there prayers had been answered. So they opened with basically no money.
They have 10 places to sit and eat and Robin said there are many days that they are so busy they run out of food!
They are amazing people and the food rocked! Better than San Marco's or Gloria's (although I didn't try the tamale's).
They have no employees and the restaurant is completely run by the family, husband, wife and daughter.
Check it out!

OK, this part made me laugh:
But I have to help out this restaurant, which has aboslutely no affiliation to me I promise, and I'm not a good liar (I have the rap sheet to prove it).
Robin and Robert used to own the Mexican Restaurant on Broadway, the block where Rite Aid sits. Their food back then was awesome and every one raved about it, but because Rite Aid bought the building they closed. I am happy to see that Bobby and Robin are back in business. There have been plenty of small restaurants that have opened and never thrived, but with their food talents I am positive they will be looking for a bigger place soon.
I meant that there have been a lot of small restaurants that have opened in that building.
Leave it to AZ to glom on to someones story in order to build his already beaten rep. Sick.
AZ: I can give them a free Virtual Tour Business Directory Listing FREE of charge for 6ish months under my Brand New Business Promotion. BTW, the name changed from 360IPT.Com to www.GreaterToledoVirtualTours.com . It's the same thing I did for your restaurant. Don't forget to tell your FaceBook friends if you haven't already! Once I get the Virtual Tour up I can send you the link for a repost.
Glad to see this post - I saw a small ad for this place in the Toledo Free Press a couple of weeks ago and wondered about it.
I will definitely have to give them a try. GOOD Mexican food is something Toledo can definitely use.
No love for San Marcos? I have since moved to Columbus (for Ohio State) and haven't been back in town for a long time but that place was incredible.
Have heard a few people say Little Acapulco is better than San Marcos. No disrespect to SM.
I'm a die hard San Marcos fan- Cantaloupe juice and a Tamale.... YUMMY! If I'm ever near Airport HWY tho I just may try Acapulco. It's amazing- Toledo can never have too many Mexican restaurants!
OK, am I the only person in Toledo who isn't in love with San Marcos? I tried. I tried really hard to like the food. But the tacos I ordered were so greasy I almost gagged. The tongue was nicely cooked, but wow, it came served in such a grease pool, it was hard to look at, let alone eat. I love small indee restaurants, but I can't get with this one. Please please please someone explain to me what I'm missing here? And yes, I've tried the food several times. Someone, anyone -- help me love this place!
I sometimes stop at Little Acapulco for dinner on my way home. It is nice to have a place like this so close to me.
I had lunch at San Marcos once. It was delish
luvtoledo: I must admit that I was originally a HUGE fan of San Marcos. The food was authentic (regardless of what the rest of the also ran Mexican joints in Toledo try to tell you about their own offerings) and great tasting. However, the last two times we dined in at SM, something had definitely changed.
The food had lost that "something special" that we had originally discovered - and, like you, we found the offerings very greasy.
I still patronize the grocery store and still purchase the red and green table sauces to take home but my SO refuses to dine in any more. I'm thinking they possibly grew too quickly and haven't been able to maintain the lunch counter quality they once had. Or, we just happened to hit it on a couple of off days for them.
that's interesting
i've always found their meats greasy... but not too much. just enough. :)
don't give up on them. every visit i've had to the new place has been fantastic
I haven't upso. I will try them again one day on my own - w/o the SO! Toledo waited too long for good authentic Mexican - I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet.
let me know next time you go! :)
Upso and/or Foodie, can either of you recommend something besides the tacos that you've especially liked? I'll try again, if there's any particular recommendation.
well, for me it's always about the tacos. but a couple things to note
you must order them with the cilantro, onions & cheese and you MUST eat them with the homemade green & red sauces
i like to get a combo of 1 tongue, 1 pork & 1 chicken taco just so there is some variety in the meat.
i also recently tried the poblanos... everywhere around town over fries them, and doesn't put much inside. but at least for my experience, it was a giant pepper with a huge amount of cheese inside.
i also had the tamales recently. i was surprised by the spice. they we not amazing, but were really good. i think if i hadn't already scarffed down 3 tacos i may had had more interest.
my wife has gotten their giant mexican sandwiches. they make their own bread... it's definitely a bready sandwich. but huge and inexpensive. worth a try
The chicken tostadas we had on our first visit months ago were nothing short of amazing. I've also had some great tacos there - including the tongue - and, I eat them exactly as upso described.
I used to buy their tamales before they had the restaurant - when they only had the lunch counter. On a Saturday, mid morning, you could get a dozen tamales (already packaged and still hot) - "regular" or "spicy" at the meat counter - they would be stacked high. They were amazing. Lately, however, on the rare occassion they have them, they've been so-so.
I agree about adding the extras on the tacos, especially the sauces.
I can't go to San Marcos without getting a steak quesadilla (also add the sauces). They're so incredible - and I generally don't order quesadillas...
I've done San Marco's about 60 times over the last year. I am a hardcore Steak taco with cillantro and onion fan and I generally ask for a roasted hot pepper on the side that I dice into the taco's.
A few thoughts (IMO)
One key is that they serve them fresh and hot. The beef has to be hot and the tortillas coming right off the grill. If the meat and tortilla's have sat at the assembly line for a long period then they are not nearly as enjoyable. I think this was more easily achieved back in the day when they had less space to work with and the small grilling area.
I enjoy a little dampness (aka Grease) - I saw a few comments above about "Too greasy." There is probably a thin line somewhere but I do enjoy hot and slightly moist.
Last - They are best when they do not skimp on anything. Plenty of cilantro, plenty of onion and a "fair" amount of steak.
Squeeze the fresh lime on top, cover with grean sauce... Yum! I think I'll be there tomorrow now!
If the place is better than SM, it's going on my short list of places to check out.
Does this place sell marg's ?
Just had lunch there today, chicken tostada and chicken enchilada. Meh, it was more than OK, not great. As a matter of fact I need a couple of Rolaids now to quell the indigestion. Prices are low, and ownership is nice, fresh toppings for the tostada were good. Not a destination place but if you're in the area, try it, you'll probably like it. One thing I did not understand and should have asked about was if an item like a taco or tostada or enchilada costs $1.75 each, why does a "dinner" that includes two of the aforementioned items along with beans and rice cost $6.95?, if I remember correctly. Those must be some fantastic beans and rice. There are other items that I could take exception too but it seems like I'm dumping on them, maybe I would make a bad critic.
No margaritas there! It's a tiny place with about 4 stools at the service counter and two tiny tables jammed against the front window. There will be no liquor license in their future. They're only open until 7 p.m. anyway.
We had supper there; it was just OK. There was no seasoning of any kind in the ground beef (enchilada). The dinner plates are $6.95; they come with plenty of pretty-good rice and beans. Salsa and chips cost extra (but the owner was nice and didn't charge us for them). Canned pop in the cooler. Burgers, wings, and possibly hot dogs are also on the menu.
The proprietor is taking an interest in training local youth for careers in the restaurant industry. By working with them, he can get them qualified for better jobs. He is doing a great job with mentoring and outreach, so I was happy to buy supper there. But it is no competition for my favorite, El Vaquero.
Tried the Cinco De Mayo on Alexis a while back. Food was great, and not very expensive. The queso (sp) dip was fantastic.
I'm following up on the San Marcos not being up to snuff comment. I didn't want to believe it but we went last night and it was OFF. Salsa was still great, sauces were still great but my usual steak quesadilla tasted like it was missing something. My wife has a chicken taco especial and I would go so far as to say it was bad. HUGE disappointment.
I'll still continue to go with crossed fingers but makes me sad.
Stopped by Little Alcapulco today. Nice people and really tasty tacos!
idinspired,
Sorry to hear about your disappointment a few weeks ago. Made me a little nervous as we set off for there today. I just went there for lunch with my wife. They were crowded which made me a little nervous. We waited less than 5 minutes for a couple seats at the counter and had our food in front of us in less than 10 minutes. The food we ordered was served fresh off the grill and hot. The tacos were generous, not too stacked not empty.
I hope the few issues were anomalies. I really want this place to stay viable but also continue to serve great food and be a value. I've only had one time that I was really disappointed and they made it right immediately by serving me a fresh, perfect plate.
Tried LaFiesta for lunch today. Good, Fast and Nice Pricing.
I stopped by San Marcos last evening on the way home to refresh my red and green salsa supply for home. I swear they're making that stuff hotter each time I get it! Especially the red salsa - the scalp sweat begins almost immediately - but I love it.
LaFiesta, haven't eaten there in a long time, last time we went it was dry and tasteless.
^ with watered down Margies made from a cheap mix. Hope it's improved. It would have to improve a whole lot from the last time we ate there to get me to try it again.
