I was driving by the downtown post office when I noticed they were demolishing the Plabel factory. I know this was bought by the city to try to sell to a development company but that fell through. Now without knowing anything else about the property – I am wondering where the city found money to do this? Seems like it would be at the bottom of the list now that no one is interested in it.

one of these things is not like the others...
one of these things just doesn't belong...
i don't think any developer is looking for industrial along with residential and green space. i hope they do find this a good location to continue the swann creek river walk - at least hold onto it until it becomes more feasible. if they could get the creek property between summit and st clair on the south side (next to the blue warehouse) that would connect a continuous path through bochenstein and promenade parks - progress in taking back our waterways and connecting neighborhoods to downtown.

There were some pretty extreme environmental issues with the building and the toxins that had seeped into the land during it's rubber days. We'd looked at buying it years ago, but there was just too much cleanup that had to be done to make it a reasonable investment. It's sad, but sometimes tearing a building down and starting from scratch is the only way to go.
to remediate is expensive and to scrape off ten feet probably would not work on the site (nor capping) - residential is out then - too odd shape and small size for light industrial probably. possible retail and green space then?!
