Just has not been a good week, had to put my dog down Wed, due to complications from diabetes/pancreatitis/ everything else this poor dog has been through in the last 3 months. She blew out both her back knees couple months ago and has been slowly working on recovery. The vets and everyone over at Shoreland animal hospital has been so great in caring for her. But over the weekend after not eating and throwing up water, we took her in, but she just couldn't overcome it all. Was looking ok on Tuesday but suffered a 108 degree temp overnight and wasn't responsive after they got her temp back down from and ice bath, She just had had enough and so I decided to have her put down. I left a large chunk of my heart back in that vet office, not sure the hole will ever heal over.
RIP Kiley the blue healer

Losing a loved animal feels like losing a family member. I know about the hole left in your heart but you will heal.
May you take comfort in the fact she is at peace and no longer in pain.
ohhhh, linecrosser. this always just sucks. we animal-lovers feel your pain. know you did the right thing by ending your sweet dog's suffering. now take care of yourself as you suffer. no, the hole never heals over. you just rearrange your heart to accommodate it. all my sympathies to you.
Time helps. Remember the good times. Remember also that you gave her excellent care, lots of love, a secure home and loved her enough to do the right thing when the time came. Bless you for that.
Thank you for having the courage to let her go. Grieve her loss, and in time the hole will be filled with wonderful memories.

I had to put my German Shepherd down on Christmas Day a few years ago. The Vet came to my house and injected him while I held him in my arms. It just killed me. I still have problems with the holidays just for that reason alone. Hope things get better for you Linecrosser.....
RockChick, will you share the name of the vet willing to provide home care for this sad task?
Linecrosser, I'm very sorry for the loss of your girl. They truly are family. It hurts so much when they have to go! I hope you find solace in knowing, as Holland said, that you gave her great comfort and happiness all those years. And you stood by her very patiently during her illness, giving her a chance to recover. She was lucky to have you as her owner! And I'm sure she gave you all the love she had to give you in return. She will always have a place in your heart. Bless you.
My Vet at the time was Dr. Brad Reiser and he is clear out in Wauseon Ohio. This was MANY years ago that he did this for me. I seriously doubt that he would drive to Toledo. I had been a client of his for many years and knew that I was in a tough spot with a terminally ill, very large dog that I could not lift into a car. He will always have a soft spot in my heart.
Sorry for your loss. We also put down a pet recently. The reason you feel this way is because you care...your heart will alow you to love again.
So sorry for your loss...I lost my Dobergirl Sarah in July. I'm glad you had the courage to do what was best for your loved one.
We love them and then we cry....
Truly sorry to hear of your loss Linecrosser. Been there, done that and know what you are going through.
I went dogless for 12 years (after having dogs my enitre life) after I put my little guy down because I just didn't think I could go through it again. I finally got another pup back in 2006 and have regretted waiting so long every day. The joy my dog brings to my life is simply not measurable. While I do not look forward to the inevitable someday, I will not repeat the mistake of going dogless for so long again.
I tell you this as food for thought. As much as your heart hurts right now, another dog can really help speed the healing process.

I've never been without a dog for an extended period. I'm more of a dog person, or so I thought. But when my favorite cat died I went 15 yrs. We have two cats now in addition to three dogs. Its wonderful. One dog is fourteen though, and while he's doing great we both know these days are pretty precious. We are making the best of them.
Linecrosser, Foodie's right. There's another dog out there somewhere that needs a great home like yours. He or she will be totally different, but a great joy to have.
You don't have to go searching just now, but be open to the possibility.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Linecrosser, and Dino and Tkd for your recent losses, too.
Thank you jmleong, it's so hard when we lose them and I also thought I would not go there again and get another dog. In August I got an email from my favorite Dobe rescue about 2 females that were bonded together...and now I have them at home with me. They enrich my life in so many ways, and I'm glad I adopted them. {though sometimes it's a circus in my house !}
Sorry Linecrosser, to hear about your loss. She is in a better place - no more pain. She counted on you to do the right thing, and you did. I do believe one day we'll see our pets again. She'll be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. Peace.
I'm sorry for your loss, Linecrosser. My sincere condolences to you and to the rest of the people here who have lost a pet.
The only bad part about having a dog is that you know you'll out live them, and that is truly hard.
