Selling (old) wine in toledo

hey guys! i inherited a cache of port from a family member, and i'd like to sell it as port is not something i'm interested in.

any ideas of places in toledo that would be interested in buying something like this?

I know nothing about wine, but a lot of these bottles are VERY old.

upso - If the wine is older and no longer available on the open market, you could pursue auctioning it commercially, but that usually requires some sort of certification that it has been properly cellared, has sufficient fill on the bottles, corks still intact, etc...

Richard Fortney at Maumee Wines has a good customer list and he may be able to connect you with someone interested in purchasing them.

If you don't find a buyer, you can consider donating it for auction and taking the tax deduction. Mobile Meals of Toledo does an annual Wine Gala where they offer rare and fine wines in a live auction and other items (including wine) in a silent auction. I'm sure Mobile Meals would love to have them, as they will be celebrating their 25th Wine Gala next year.

I love the idea that Mobile Meals has a wine specialty! Did not know they would bring me some booze along with a hot meal. Excellent service. ;-)

Just because wine is old does not mean it is good, or worth anything. Only a few select wines actually age well beyond a few years....and then they have to be bought and consumed within a certain time window. In short...just because its old doesnt mean its worth a thing.

Not to hijack your thread but this post reminded me of something. About 15 years ago, I worked with an old italian guy. He made his own wine. Once on my birthday he brought in a bottle. It was in an old pop bottle complete with screw on pop bottle lid. It even had the old label on it. I took it home and had a small glass. It tasted like gasoline. This was hilarious because he would brag and brag about how he made his own wine and how good everyone thought it was. Yikes.

Are you looking to sell the bottles as a whole (bulk), or would you be willing to sell some individually? I would be interested in purchasing one or two. I love port! I've also bought port on Ebay in the past, but I don't know what sort of regs would be out there on selling it online.

Yes I know port ages....but if the bottles are compromised in any way they will have not aged well. There's a lot that can go wrong with aging.

Newbie, individually is fine!

upso if you are selling these individually it would make a great Christmas present for the wife. Can you post some of the details or mirco blog them?

Upso, in the spirit of the season I'd remind you that many local not-for-profits hold Wine Gala fundraisers. I would humbly suggest that you have Matt appraise/evaluate the bottles and then donate them to the nfp of your choice. The often spirited auctions on wines at these events help the charities raise tens of thousands of much needed dollars.

If you donate it to a charity I sure hope you don't have any that have gone bad. I personally would feel pretty bad giving something like that to a charity only to have someone drink spoiled wine.

I talked to Matt, he said come visit. He has questions about storage and handling, but would be interesting in seeing the bottles.
