Toledo Blade: Elections Director Resigns Post
Director Ben Roberts, a Republican, submitted his letter of resignation effective at the end of the business day.
In an odd twist shortly after the resignation, Election Manager Meghan Gallagher, a Republican, called the police to the elections office Friday night after she said Democrat Daniel DeAngelis, the deputy director, gained access to Mr. Roberts’ office and removed his computer.
Ms. Gallagher declined to comment. Police responded and took an incident report but did not categorize it as a burglary. Instead, they called it a dispute.
Mr. DeAngelis confirmed that Ms. Gallagher denied him the key to Mr. Roberts’ office so he then called building security to open the door. The computer was removed “to secure it,” he said and none of the paper files was removed.
Ben Roberts' Resignation Letter
The LCBOE is a caustic environment and not the norm across the 88 counties of Ohio. Speaking with officials at the SOS office and Directors/Deputies in other counties, they continue to be surprised and shocked at the shenanigans surrounding Lucas County. Alleged items such as email fraud, one party with both access keys, improper handling/destruction of documents, forced agendas, lack of policy/procedure, and an overall theme of obscuring transparency and accountability are the norm. More time is spent overall dealing with infighting and legal battles than the core BOE operations.
