A T & T U-Verse

Just rec'd an e-mail this morning from AT&T that U-Verse is now available in the Point - just in case anyone in the area is interested in checking them out.

I've read so many mixed opinions about it that I have no idea if they're worth a look or not.

On another note, knowing that I was taught to let sleeping dogs lie, whatever happened to Ryan? Haven't seen any word from him in over a month.

Ryan took offense to something that happened around Halloween weekend. He stated that he wasn't coming back and asked jr to delete his account.

I don't even remember exactly what the argument was about, but it appears that he hasn't posted since.

P.S. I have no experience with AT&T U-Verse, as it isn't available in my area (Sylvania Twp). One of my husband's friends has it and seems to be satisfied though.

Hmmmm.......timeline coincides with his last log in which was 10-29-11.

Ryan taking offense - that's funny considering his many caustic remarks.

re: Ryan--apparently jr said something that peeved him and he said something like "when the admin starts censoring it's time to bail...please delete my account".

Head to Cedar Creek and tell him we all say hi...

I have a couple of friends with it. One loves it and the other hates it. My friend who hates it says it's because the interface on the TV is too slow.

If there is now contract, then you can always install it and ditch if it doesn't work out.

Installation ranges from a couple hour process to a nightmare. Mine was pretty painless, but if you're the first one in the neighborhood I hear its awful.

Other than that I love it. It never goes out, the packages are balanced well enough for me to pick, and the picture is good.

I have it. I've had Buckeye, Direct TV and Dish.

Buckeye and Dish battled for the bottom in terms of equipment issues and service issues, and also in Buckeye's case lack of programming. No way I would go back to either of them.

I have all HD U Verse now since they first threw the switch in this area. Picture clarity is the best of the 4. Programming is the best of the 4. Equipment is the best of the 4. Service is the best of the 4. However, a Direct TV broadcast is seemless from room to room and there is no limit to how much HD you can record at any one time.

There have been times when I've been tempted to go back to Direct TV, until my husband reminds me of the days we spent waiting to get faulty equipment replaced and having no TV but over-the-air stations to watch. We still keep our tower antennae and rotor in good working order and can switch off of U Verse if the need arises. Direct TV equipment is really, really prone to problems.

We have had one epsiode of digital breakup across the spectrum with U Verse which lasted about 20 minutes. We had to have the wireless router replaced once because it wouldn't put out a signal more than two feet away from it. Bad equipment. Couldn't use the wireless lap top unless I was right in front of it. After some time with tech support - and to be completely honest here - some frustration because they wanted to blame my brand new top of the line Toshiba - it was replaced. Our tower computer, which sits right next to the router functioned just fine.

So we stay with U Verse.

I had it for several years. It is very expensive and they kept taking channels off, never to return.

holland? What channels/programming do you get with uverse that you don't with buckeye? I figured they're about 95% the same...

Love uverse. Had slight "technical" issues in the beginning, but that resulted in them replacing all the lines in our neighborhood and now it works great. Bonus for us is that I call every few months and get 90 days of Showtime/HBO/Etc for free, just call and cancel on the 90th day :)

SensorG: Buckeye's programming depth was noticeabley thin compared to Direct TV back when we switched. I recall at the time that shortly after we switched Buckeye started to add channels and advertising heavily that they were beefing up their stuff. One channel - The Speed Channel - was enough to make us drop them. Its possible that they compare more favorabley today - thanks to the force of competition. Their other issues still leave a bad taste.

I can't remember a time that Buckeye didn't have the Speed Channel. Not that I watch it...

Distasteful issues from a JRB-owned enterprise? Surely you jest...

I've never even heard of the Speed Channel.

Though I suppose I've had access to it, either as a Buckeye or DirecTV customer.

(Actually, I couldn't even tell you how many channels we have, since only 10-ish or so get regular use in our house.)

Big NASCAR fans here. Never miss a race. When NASCAR started broadcasting some races on Speed Channel, the channel wasn't on Buckeye's programming. In fact, The Blade, in the TV section would list when a NASCAR race was going to be broadcast, EXCEPT for when a race would be on SPEED. Buckeye and The Blade seemed to think that if they totally ignored the SPEED channel people wouldn't know it existed and Buckeye wouldn't have to carry it. Buckeye eventually did add it, obviously. Geeze, I dislike that company. If it wasnt for satellite coming in they would never have upgraded anything.

"If it wasnt for satellite coming in they would never have upgraded anything."

While you are absolutely correct in that statement (much like automobiles - if the Japanese hadn't been eating our lunch, the Big 3 would still be turning out the same junk they did in the late 70's through mid 80's), I find Buckeye's HD offering pretty extensive. As I've mentioned here before, I've been pretty happy with Buckeye's service overall. My past and recent dealings with AT&T are enough to make me REALLY think twice before I would ditch Buckeye and jump in bed with AT&T.

I'd just like to have the option to consider switching or staying. It surprises me that U-Verse isn't offered in my area yet.

We reluctantly tried DirecTV a few years ago and were extremely dissatisfied with the service. (Only reason we changed was that DirecTV was going to be the exclusive carrier of the baseball channel. Of course, after we got into a contract with DirecTV, other providers were allowed to offer the channel as well. Sigh...but we suffered with their poor service for awhile until we could switch back to Buckeye.)

I've had UVerse for awhile and love it. It is SO convenient, the service never goes out, and when you call for customer service, they are out in a jiffy. I'll probably have to scale back on it since we have the whole shmear, and it is expensive, but I adore it.

Love, love, LOVE U-verse. We've had everything - Buckeye, DishNetwork and finally U-verse. Buckeye's customer service let us down one too many times and we had a few outages. Also problems with the cable boxes. DishNetwork just sucked because of the reception issues with the dish when it would rain or snow. No problems with U-verse.

I have had it for 9 months. Whatever you do DO NOT believe that you will receive $### in rebates and gift cards.
The picture was vastly different from DirectTV or Dish Network. When I called DirectTV and explained to them that one of the reasons for my switch was the picture quality the attendant tried to tell me that I could have upgraded to some other box and gotten a better picture quality. it didn't matter. i was extremely unhappy with DirectTv service.
I like that I can access the DVR on every box. I like the interactive services.
Installation was prolonged. After six months and three trips the tech went to the pole (in the backyard) and replaced ALL the cables. I would suggest that you insist on new cables everywhere if you have an older house. Each time they came into the house to "fix" the problem with my picture and Internet, they charged me $55.00. I was able to get the charges removed after explaining that the problem with with the cable and not anything that I did. Also, if you ever have to call the support line, pull up a chair and pour yourself a drink. You will be waiting a while.

I had AT&T Uverse and loved it. Image was clean, service was steady, all was well. We only got rid of it because I felt the need to purge the existence of cable tv from our house.

I would still have it, and would go back to it first and foremost if I ever wanted cable tv back in my house.

With full disclosure, doesn't your husband install it?

I am an AT&T home/cell phone customer and receive pretty much constant marketing - both by mail and occasionally by phone - about switching to U-Verse. I tell them I am satisfied with Buckeye and have no plans to switch, even with the prospect of saving money by bundling. (I also tell Buckeye the same about switching to their phone service). Aside from the rare outage, Buckeye's been fine. They have 24 hour phone support usually answered fast - and it's nice to know at least some of my monthly payment is going to stay in the area and help keep local people employed. They also listen to suggestions about channels and offerings more so than some giant corporation would, I'm assuming.

Mixman, those are pretty much my thoughts about keeping it local. I've had the Buckeye VIP bundle for 5 years now and am pretty satisfied with it. And, as I've mentioned here several times, for me, Buckeye's service is second to none - 24 X 7 X 365.

AT&T on the other hand - I've had an issue with them at work that they've been promising to correct for over a year now. One month it's corrected, the next month it's un-corrected. Just getting an AT&T rep on the phone is maddening.

I took a look at the U-Verse offerings online last night. For me, it would make no sense to switch. I've got a couple of TiVo units with lifetime service utilizing CableCards from Buckeye. I can only imagine what a nightmare it would be to get those from AT&T - if they even offer them. Besides, Buckeye offers more HD programming than I could possibly watch. As it is, we end up watching only a few channels and watch literally nothing from the so called major networks.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts and opinions - they are all over the spectrum.

Slowsol - no my husband does not install AT&T Uverse or work in any relations to that department. He does work for AT&T...however we paid for our service, and enjoyed it regardless of him working for the company or not.

Again...by saying I liked UVerse it has NO BARING on my husbands job because he has nothing to do with it.

We switched from Buckeye to ATT Uverse after Buckeye raised their rates again. The picture was clear and the internet was fast and the DVR was fantastic and easy to use. Then the bill came. What was supposed to be almost $100/month cable bill turned out to be $189/month. That's when we discovered that the Buckeye commercials claiming their "customer service is superior to other" was true. We spent 2+ hours multiple days waiting on the phone for ATT's customer service. The last time we called we waited almost 3 hours and got a message saying that their customer service is now closed.

We've been happily without cable for a month now

Pretty much what I discovered when searching the various packages offered by AT&T. For a U-Verse package that most closely matches what I pay Buckeye for, it was the same if not a few bucks more.
