Three Restaurants I miss, Three that better not go away.

I was at Costco today and reminisced about the old Barry Bagels and the ambiance that was there. It was a really comfortable place to relax and eat lunch. The new location just doesn't have that same feel for me. Even though Barry Bagels is still around it made me ponder what three restaurants I miss that have fallen by the wayside and which three that still remain I would most hate to lose. I wonder what some of the TT posters choices would be.

The three I'd hate to lose would be: Jing Chuan, Mancy's Steak House and San Marco's.
The three I miss most would be: Kratzer's Deli, Chuck Muer's, Croy's.

Mancy's??? Meh...like eating in a dungeon and the food has never been anything special...ever.

I agree with Justareviewer. My wife and I ate there in Sept for our anniversary because my parents gave us a gift card. Worst steak I ever had. It was dry and tough. I can make a better one at home.

miss
coney island at the old westgate
brauers at colony
horn hardware

better not go away
inky's
koto buki
nick & jimmy's

given i listed horn hardware, by extention, grumpy's had better not go away either. i love the concept of the budepest restaurant but i prefer packo's food - thank god the family is finally gone.

Error... I meant to say Brauer's Deli at the Colony - Not Kratzer's Deli??? Kratzer's was a steakhouse or something - not sure how I got that tangled up. Brauers Reubens and potato soup... YUM!

Mancy's is a once in a year place for us so I must have been fortunate that the last few years we hit it on the right night.

That was Krotzer's Steak House, wasn't it? Never was in Brauer's, but my folks were, they loved it. I love me a good Reuben. good day for potato soup.

Strangely, my most missed restaurant is Linck's. I still like to go to the hospitals and eat in the cafeteria. Must be a childhood memory thing. I really have no particular love for any 'normal' restaurants in the area.

enjoyeverysandwich, i miss the old horn hardware store as well. grumpy's is going nowhere, anytime soon.

i have a long list for both sides, but to start
i miss frank uncles, sundance (in bg) and the old fifi's (the new renovation ruined the atmosphere for me)

3 i'd mourn the loss of:
the beirut, san marcos & the frog leg inn

I miss Cookers, Bill Knapp's and Mountain Jacks.
Also Cousinos Navy Bistro but only for the atmosphere, Admirals is awful.

I second Beirut. I think I put the upstart San Marco's on there mainly because even if I have to trim my budget I can still hit them each week.

Making myself way to hungry!

Bungalow, Dominic's and The Surf.

Don't ever go away... Inky's, Shawns Irish Pub/Back Door, and Webbers (4th old Tony Packo's)

Miss now: White Hut's Monster Burgers at Secor and Sylvania, that BBQ place at the corner of Hill and Westwood, and Tom Weber's various places, Carly Cheenas/Sunset Grill/Blues Magoos and all the great Chicago dogs and Italian beef.

Would miss: Pizza! Jo-Jos, Ginos, Inkys.

The place at Hill and Westwood was Richie's BBQ and they had great food. I miss Pablo's at the corner of Douglas and Gracewood. It was my favorite Mexican place back in the day. Been gone a long time and I doubt anyone remembers it.

Miss Joey's Supper Club on Detroit, The Ground Round on Alexis and Telegraph, Frisch's BigBoy in the Point. I would miss Mancy's for the once a year we go there, have to watch what you order they rarely get it right, Golden City in the Point, Marco's Pizza.

Ragtime Rick's
Dominick's
Denny's on Secor (food was garbage but had great times there with friends)

Would miss:

Barada
Shorty's
Wei Wei

taliesin - I'm curious about your Barada reference. I've only been there once and I wasn't impressed - not bad but not great. What do you recommend there?

It has been a while (over a year) since I've been, but my standard order was one of the platters. It had shish kafta, kibbeh, and meat grape leaves. IMO best grape leaves I've had. Hummus is kinda bland there (definitely no comparison to a place like say Ferdos on that count). My wife loves their moussaka and one of the other eggplant dishes.

Miss: Turtle Club (not for the food, so maybe this doesn't count, but what a great dump that was), Soup & Such (could that concept fly again?), the old Westgate Barry Bagel (Version 1.0), Brauer's Deli, Krotzer Steakhouse, Casa de Maria, Smith's Cafeteria.

Would miss: Rumor's (despite the cheesy 70s-sounding name), Beirut, Jing Chuan, Calvino's, Grumpy's

Nice VTTV. My wife and I used to hang out in the basement bar with the fireplaces. A couple times we wished they hadn't called our name for a table - we were having so much fun down there.

Three missed:

Frank Unkle's
Original Koral Hamburg (River Road)
Linck's (only because my grandmother took me there...)

Three I would miss:

Schmuckers (dessert)
Inky's
JoJo's

Slightly off topic...
VTTV: Thanks for the link--I think I went through every page on that blog! Great memories. I wish I could get a new '68 Firebird for $2,699 these days!

Whats the deal with Inkys pizza? I understand if it's a nostalgia or supporting a local business thing but it isn't much better than a 5 dollar Hot & Ready.

Missed:

Angelo's Spaghetti House
Chris Berman's Supper Club
Elmer's
Gonna add one more: There used to be a deli at Spring Meadows called (I think) Jeff Sherman's Deli. Does that ring a bell with anyone? They had the absolute best chicken salad sandwich.

Would be missed:

Grumpy's
Myles Pizza (Does B.G. count?)
The Original Sub Shop

posted by daddyg on Dec 19, 2011 at 03:41:08 pm     #

Yep, sure do remember the sandwich deli at Spring Meadows. Don't recall if it was called Jeff Sherman's but he owned it. Great sandwiches.

Hey, hey,hey - if we are throwing deli shops - nothing and I mean nothing - was better than Warzy's in Southland.

Warzy's was out of this world good, I would do anything to have it back. Although Churchills does sell a Warzy's sub exactly like the one I use to get.

There are so many I would miss... but I suppose the top 3 would be:

Frog Leg Inn
Mancy's Steakhouse
The Original Sub Shop

I miss:
The food at Diva (but I hear Erika Rapp, the chef, is opening up another spot downtown?)
The ambiance at Fifi's since it's renovation
&
Gus' YUM YUM perfect burgers

AquaMan22 - Churchill's stopped selling them a while back but - Hurray! Wixey's sells them daily until they run out. YES - Wixey's.

The Charcoal House on Talmadge. Also miss Link's and the original Barry's Bagels- although, I still go to the first Barry's on Sylvania at Holland Sylvania.

posted by golddustwoman on Dec 20, 2011 at 09:41:26 am     #

Jeez...Warzy's. Totally forgot about that place. I'd replace Linck's on my list with Warzy's all week and twice on Sunday.

Guess I didn't know I missed it since it completely slipped my mind.

I sincerely hope Wixey's makes it in these times. So much better than anything a supermarket "bakery" (use that term loosely) churns out.

Where was Warzy's?

(I didn't grow up in Toledo, so many of the places listed here are unfamiliar to me.)

It looks like Wixey's just opened a second location at Colonial Village.

Warzy's was in Southland Shopping Center on the corner of Glendale and Byrne. That Center used to be a hopping place for the South End.

I miss:

The Colony Restaurant (Remember those beets on the salads?)
The Holland House (Home of the Moron Burger!)
Fu-Yi's (Great Hot and Sour soup!)

Better Not Go Away:

Lee Garden in Perrysburg (best since Fu-Yi!)
City Barbecue (Fantastic beef brisket!)
Doc's in Tontogany (Outstanding ribs!!!)

I'm going to create a spreadsheet with some of the names I have not heard with the intention of trying them out next year. Lee Garden in Perrysburg, for example is one of the many I have not heard of.
