ADT Question ...different than previous post

My 25yr old daughter bought her first home from a settlement she received and paid cash. The equipment was already in the home so she wanted to feel safe living on her own she contacted them in Feb. '11 and purchased it with a 3yr contract (dumb but that was their requirement). She had paid up 6mos service, thinking everything would be alright for her financially as she was working. Unfortunately that's not how life goes and she was thrown for a loop with fell a bit on hard times. She has paid all her other bills that are necessities (gas, lights, phone, car insurance and taxes). She gave up things that she can not afford. So this is where the ADT comes to point.

She owes them a bill, but is unable and has let them know what has happened to her. Today she gets home and the alarm is going off in her house. She calls ADT to let them know and they tell her that they activated the alarm in her house because she owes them money. She said that she wants to keep their service but one, has just went back to work and will try to catch up. They refused to turn the alarm off and it is beeping like crazy. She is very prone to migraines and has started giving her one. She told the rep on the phone that if they won't work with her to cancel her service and they tell her that they can start that process today and that it may take up to 30 days and it will continue to beep until then. I looked over the paper work and unless I'm missing it with my 45yr old eye sight, I do not see anything that states that if she doesn't pay they will sound the alarm until she makes a payment.

Is this something they can do?

I told her to go to the box and disco the service but she is afraid to doesn't want to get electrocuted. I am currently waiting on someone from their corporate office to call me back. I am hoping to get over there with a friend to see if we can disco it in the basement some how.

What a rotten deal that is - and certainly doesn't make for very good PR. I have an ADT system - hopefully, her box (or boxes) that house the alarm are not direct wired but rather plugged into an outlet. If yes, unplug them. There may also be a battery backup inside the box. Hopefully (again) the previous owner left the keys to open the boxes so you can remove the cables from the battery. These are low voltage systems so I wouldn't worry too much about electrocution.

that is INSANE! i am an ADT subscriber and i've never heard of anything like this
as foodie says, she can easily pull the batteries out from the box in the basement.
this story is enough to make me consider switching providers.

That sounds bizarre to me as well. I could understand them not responding to calls or alarms from her home if she owes them money. But making the alarm beep until she pays up? That's overkill.

That does not sound like ADT policy. I would contact the company direct with your daughter present and verify exactly what is typed above, confirm it with a manager if possible.

I have said it before, NEVER go with ADT. They use proprietary software/hardware and will charge you up the wazoo for anything and they require their guy to install the simplest thing. ADT is not a local company. Call them sometime. You'll get somebody in another city or state.

Use Habitec. They live in Toledo and support our economy. You can also swap out their stuff with Radio Shack equipment. Avoid ADT at all costs.

Rip ATD's stuff out of the wall and call Habitec. They'll treat you right.

I'd yank those wires out or at least cut them. If she won't do it, let us know. I can do it.

At&t uverse did something similar to me. I fell behind on my payments and called them to cut back on as many features as possible to minimize the charges in the future until I paid up. Their policy was not to make any changes to service unless the bill was paid up to date. I tried to explain to them that I was trying to minimize my debt by making them aware of my financial setback and that I would pay, but to minimize what my costs would be monthly. They totally refused to make any changes.

Did as you all have posted and the sound is finally off. Yeah I believe that it was a hard story to swallow, until I was there myself and heard it. I am waiting for a call back from a corporate. It isn't like she just decided not to pay her bill, she wanted service but things happen that are not planned. Keeping her home became a priority over paying that bill.

What was the beeping from? If they discontinued the service I can't imagine why there would be beeping.

Unplug the transformer and disconnec the batteries. Disconnect the telco wires by unplugging the RJ31X. Some companies will connect to your system thru the phone line and display a message on the keypad for non-paymetn or induce an annoying trouble signal.
Most companies that demand long term contracts can be relentless when it comes to non-payment due to the fact the profit is tied to the monthly fee because of a low initial installation price and "only a dollar a day" slogans.

While there are good and bad stories-a-plenty for most every product or service to be had, I've been very pleased with ADT and their service. While my monthly monitoring fee may sound high to some, it does include full maintenance. I've had a touchpad replaced and a couple of other things over the years with no additional charge for the parts or service call.

When I was shopping for a system, my first call was to Habitec since we had used them for years at my place of employment and were pleased with them. However, at the time, Habitec was not quite up to speed with wireless technology and wanted to drill through my (plaster) walls and every single window frame - something I was not keen on doing. ADT, on the other hand, drilled only where necessary and used wireless devices everywhere else. To date (3 years now), I've had no trouble with any of the wireless devices.

Everything will be fine, Foodie, until you have to replace something simple like a camera. ADT wanted not only to sell me a new camera, but they required a technician at $125 per visit to install it. When I said I could plug it in myself and that I just wanted the camera, they wouldn't do it. You can't touch their stuff. All their equipment is proprietary --not off the shelf- and only their stuff works with their equipment. You can't walk into any store like Radio Shack and buy a replacement camera to fit into their system.

Habitec can do it all and they use off-the-shelf parts and equipment. I have three complete camera systems at different locations and I can buy any part in any city from a Radio Shack.

Just a FYI. Habitec was also found negligent for the fire at the old Brondes car dealership to the tune of over 4 million dollars. This court cas has dragged on for over 5 years and Habitec is appealing with a verdict due next month.

There's always Guardian Alarm.

Guardian might be o.k. They're local, too, and I'll bet they don't have a proprietary system that only they can work on. All I know is that ADT is not the company to go with unless you have money to burn.

To the ADT person that called my daughters work....My intent for posting, was not to have YOU call her at her job. I think that it was very in appropriate of you. She had no idea that I had posted on this site. You freaked her the heck out. If you had something to say, or an idea of what was going on then you should have posted in this forum. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT HER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

Wonder if you could install your own system and then find a company to monitor it.

Wait, someone from TT called your daughter at her job about a post on here? That is beyond ridiculous.

Most DYI alarms can be monitored by anyone as long as the control panel has a digital communicator. The dialer can be programmed to dial the appropriate number and transmit the signals in an acceptable format such as 4X2 or Contact ID

Yesterday morning I get a call from my daughter asking if I posted something about her job and the ADT situation. Said someone from TT read it and contacted her at her job, she said "luckily I answered Mom, I just got hired in here! Why would you go and do some sh!t like that?" I explained that it was in two different post, one about the ADT and the other about Hairstylist. She just hung up on the man, frightened that they were now going to stalk her at her job. He asked for Toni, then proceeded to asked if her mom was ToledoLatina, which puzzled her, and then he said he was from ADT and wanted to help her with her problem. I am so livid about this, for all he knew, I could have several different daughters and was not meaning this particular child that works in the hair industry.

I will also ring in against ADT - they overcharge and do not provide the same level of service we received from CPS (now out of business) and Asset Protection Corporation (another local company). With APC, we pay $26 per month and have both burglary and fire monitoring, broadcast over a cellular connection. More than that, I can service the system myself and the techs at APC will verify that the system is operating properly. If you are not as handy, they will also install and maintain the equipment for you. I am very pleased to have a local monitoring service again.

Don't let ADT hook you in with the "if you move we will reinstall a system at your new residence for free" schpeel. For the money we are saving in monitoring (almost $45 per month for the exact same program with better customer service), we can buy a new system on our own in less than a year.

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to switch services from ADT? We use their "cell backer" system, since we don't have any land lines connected to the house.

I'm making it my new years resolution to switch.

posted by upso on Dec 31, 2011 at 01:15:25 pm     #

If you have completed your contract, it is pretty easy. I called APC, had them convert the system to dial their call center and then called ADT to cancel. Not all systems can be converted, but many ADT panels can. However, the cell transmitter will not convert - they are not programmable, so you have to buy one from your new monitoring company.

Wow, that is bullshit. Ill never buy from them now.

There is someone from ADT on TT, and I agree it is totally unacceptable and unethical.

It is very possible that the person who contacted my daughter at work, may not have been a member of this site. I was informed that its a possibility that the company may have done a search engine on the company name an could have possibly came across this site.

posted by ToledoLatina on Jan 01, 2012 at 10:19:08 pm     #

ToledoLatina, I could see a PR type person doing that. However, this individual also took the time to read the other thread and cross reference your TT handle with the handle on the hair stylist post, and then make a very large leap in assuming that the daughter mentioned there was the same daughter mentioned in this post.

Regardless, it was still wrong for them to attempt to contact your daughter at work. To me, it screams "intimidation," whether they intended it or not. Someone legitimately trying to help should be smart enough to simply post on this thread, asking you to contact them.

Plenty of people aren't anonymous. Upso, assholelawyer, historymike... TL did nothing wrong, this is totally on ADT... Dell wants to make this about TL, this is about a creepy corporation stalking through an anonymous board piecing personal information together.

BTW... For those of us who have been posting for years, it's not that hard for someone to put it all together. I have figured out a few identities, but it would be completely wrong of any of us to act on said information.

I stay mostly anonymous to avoid the likes of Mike Coon types stalking my family and my place of work.

Me too, sensor. If I post something about a neighbor, it's really a cousin or coworker. When I mention family, I'm really referring to a neighbor or friend. Whoops, now everyone can crack my code ;-)
