Craft lessons/groups?

I'm looking for a casual group to join up with to learn the finer points of crocheting and knitting. I've tried YouTube videos, etc, but I just think I need to have someone show me in person. I stopped into the Joann Fabrics on Laskey today and they weren't really able to give me much info. Meetup.com doesn't currently have any sort of craft group that I can find for Toledo. If you've got ideas or connections to an informal sort of "stitch and bitch" gathering, or even private lessons, let me know.

Also: anyone know of any good yarn stores aside from Joann and Michaels in the area?

Check with the 577 foundation they have classes for a lot of things art related. I asked about knitting once at Michaels on Monroe Street (yeah it's not the manliest thing to ask but seems relaxing and productive) and they said they did do classes now and then.

Check out Hobby Lobby there are two of them now, one on Route 20 near Best Buy, and the other on Monroe Street almost toward Sylvania in the same plaza as the Bier Stube and CiCi's. It's like a Lowes of craft/art/decorating supplies love that place.

If you find specific date/time/location please post I'd still like to learn. Agree it's one thing to watch youtube videos and another to have someone next to you with an eye for the looping.

I know there's a crocheting group...a woman named Julie who works at Eastman & Smith law office is the contact. Sorry I don't have more information.

There is the blankets for compassion group in our area...they knit / crochet blankets for the needy. Their HQ is not far from where I work...they are happy to teach so long as you help out.

If you want to get into historical hand sewing and more...try the SCA. The local Toledo SCA group does amazing art and sewing projects.

Hey Coffee, I'd take knitting with ya! I wanted my mom to show me, but she says she can't because she's a lefty and I'm a righty.

My grandmother used to take knitting / quilting classes at a place located just next to Wixey's bakery on glendale. No idea if it's still around, but could be a good place to check out. She loved the group.

You should also check with the people at Michael's - they used to host those types of events. They may be able to put you into contact with someone.

I think Hobby Lobby has one.

Annie - why cant your mom teach you? Us lefties have been being taught by righties all our lives... sit across fm her and just mirror her actions. When my brother taught me how to swing a golf club we found it was actually easier for him to teach me because we could face each other.

I think my mom just doesn't want to. It's the same with pierogi-making -- and I'm pretty sure being a lefty has no bearing on that at all!

Anniecski: sounds cool and I'm a lefty as well. Maybe early February if a class opens will post info here (or if you hear something feel free to PM). In the next 3 weeks trying to get a car and move. But sounds like a fun way to burn some time during the winter, and if a blanket or something useful could be made I like OhioKimono's idea.

kaj: Michaels on Monroe Street near Franklin Park is having a Crochet class on Jan 25th 12-2:30pm. $25 + supplies

Also the following crochet classes on Feb 4th 1-3:30, 5th 1-3:30, 8th 12-2:30, 11th 1-3:30, 15th 12-2:30, 19th 1-3:30, and 25th 1-3:30 $25+sup

Next to the exit door they have two monthly print outs (Jan-Feb) of pending classes. They have classes every single day for everything from painting, crochet, bead making, to scrapbooking.

Didn't see any knitting classes though. If I have a car by then will aim for the weekend classes.
