Chess Club(s) in Toledo

Anyone here in or know of any Chess clubs around Toledo? There use to be a nice following at Brewed Awakenings years ago but fell apart once it was sold off.

Came across this. http://www.toledochess.org/ But it seems more geared toward higher end players who compete in rated tournament and less so for just hanging out with a cup of Joe and a board :)

Keep warm Toledo

There is a new place in the Saint James Plaza at the corner of McCord and Central called CheckMate Games. I just saw it yesterday when I dropped a package off at the UPS store. It's tucked back in the corner. I looked up their web address http://www.checkmategames.net/.

Looks like they do a lot of D&D and Magic. But, their logo has a big chess piece in it so maybe they have chess nights. Good luck!

The downtown library used to have chess every Saturday morning.

daddyg: thanks I've been to that place. The owner is nice and despite the name it's really not chess-centric. It's mainly for RPG, D&D, card games etc which is still cool. Even bought a starter deck of "Legend of the Five Rings" as an excuse to play and meet people. Missed out on the social aspect of playing these as a kid and lots of adult players there. They also have a Facebook account that's actively updated with tournaments for various games.

Good social outlet for the geekier crowd. Looking forward to going back once I have a car.

JohnnyMac: not a bad idea wish I had contact info for all of the previous players. The group that played at Brewed Awakenings was fairly strong. Toledo even has an International Master (maybe more?).

There also use to be a Go club there as well. The guy in charge was a level 5-dan player if memory serves. But ultimately that group only had a handful of players so understand why it went up in smoke.

Dungeons and Dragons: SATAN'S GAME!

"Why are you casting Magic Missile? There's nothing to attack here!"

"I'm attacking the darkness!"

Probably just an observation, LC.

I stopped by CheckMateGames and they have a pretty nice place. I think if they started one or more groups for board games the place might take off. As it is, I got the impression the store caters to FRP and associated card games.
