Dentist recommendations?

It's time for me to admit that I need to find a dentist in Toledo. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need several fillings and probably wisdom teeth extractions, and needless to say, I'm not exactly a happy camper. Where should I call? Where should I stay away from?

I liked Dr. Frankels office. Heard it on the radio and figured I'd try it out and was happy with the service. Didn't have him personally but everyone I meet there was kind friendly. Plus if you're having a timely procedure there are mounted tv's to watch during, and the ambiance is nice and relaxing. Very clean and professional.

It's on Talmage north of monroe street.

If you want a good job, definately Dr Frankels office. Repaired several players from league who lost/damaged teeth.

If you want basement pricing and service, go to Reynolds corner dental. Not a lot of frills, but gets the job done.

I've been happy with Dr. Hashim's on Executive Parkway.

Peter McGowan - SUPER nice guy - and awesome staff. On Heatherdowns 419-866-0999

My family uses the office on Heatherdowns as well. There are 2 dentists there - Dr Peter McGowan and Dr David Marker.

We drive from Sylvania over to Heatherdowns to see them, actually.

Agree that the staff there is very friendly, and also easy to work with relating to any financial/insurance related questions.

When I first moved to the Toledo area and needed to find a dentist, several co-workers recommended that office.

P.S. Do you have dental insurance? If so, you'll want to compare the recommendations here with the list of dentists on your plan.

I had once contemplated finding a dentist closer to home, but a lot of the dentists in Sylvania that were recommended to me weren't participating with my dental insurance plan. So, I decided not to worry about it finding someone closer - I've been satisfied with Marker/McGowan, and it's not like we make the drive all that often. (Few times a year, between me, husband, and kids.)

Don't go to McGowan/Marker if your nervous about going to the dentist. Their bedside manner has a lot to be desired.

I can't say enough good about Dr. Charles Latham and his staff. On Alexis just west of Alexis Gardens retirement community. Best dental care I've ever received. Been going to him for about 6 years now.

I hate going to the dentist, primarily because the sound of metal on teeth is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me (though I don't mind the fingernails on chalkboard sound at all). As a result, I'm very picky about my dentists and need to be sure that they're sensitive my 'condition' (hmm...wonder if there's a grant I can get to study this? lol).

Dr. Vesoulis in Point Place is terrific. And his staff is great too.

I just had a crown done yesterday and they have a new machine to take images of the teeth, rather than use the goop to make a mold. The pictures generate a 3-D image and send the results directly to the crown maker who can ensure the crown fits into the space and matches up with the bite. It will eliminate almost all of the sanding and grinding you normally have to go through when they place the permanent crown.

Finding a dentist is a very personal matter. I hope you'll consider Dr. Vesoulis.

And if you need an endontist, Dr. Carl Marion on Central near Cheltenham was phenomenal. I can't say enough positive about him and his staff for my recent root canal.

That's interesting. Both of my kids have been seeing them ever since their first dental visits. (Kids are 7 & 8 now.)

No kid "loves" going to the dentist, but my kids have always been put at ease there.

I'm on the "older" side of the scale, so have had more than my share of dental experiences. I've seen Dr. Thomas Valo, on Holland-Sylvania between Central and Sylvania, for several years now. Couldn't be more pleased.

I went to Dr. Valo on the recommendation of a doctor friend, who himself chose Dr. Valo because of the dentist's conservative approach to dental care. He will not steer you toward expensive procedures is there's a simpler, equally effective way to address any dental issues.

Also, Dr. Valo's staff is great. Whole office is run by people who take the time to know you. They are more than happy to help pre-cert or make insurance inquiries on your behalf, just to make sure everything's A-OK. Really, really like the people there, in addition to the A+ level of dental care.

On a personal note, I would just stay the hell away from dentists who advertise. Just sayin'.....

er, *if" there's a simpler, equally effective way....

sorry for the typo.

also: if you need wisdom teeth extractions, please go to a specialist (endodontist). in fact, that might be one good litmus test of a possible dentist -- if they don't steer you toward a specialist, you might want to reconsider. not saying dentists can't do wisdom teeth procedures, but why not see someone who routinely does these?

I would like to put in another recommendation for Dr. Vesoulis in Point Place. I've never waited more than five minutes, and all his work his been spectacular, and his prices reasonable.

Dr. Ned Hein
3900 Sunforest Ct, Ste 232
Toledo, OH 43623

I have a phobia about going to the dentist. I can get as far as the parking lot and no further. So when I'm out in the lot driving myself nuts, Dr. Ned sneaks up on me and nails me with the tranquilizer rifle. I wake up later on in my car.

So if you're phobic, Dr. Hein is the dentist for you.

That was one of the practices I considered switching to, so that I could be closer to home. (My kid's friend's parent is one of the dentists there.)

But, they aren't participating with my particular dental plan. Oh well. :(

A little drive to Perrysburg is well worth it for Gannon & Detwiler - both are excellent dentists and they have a great staff.

Highly recommended!!

thanks for all the recommendations, everyone. I don't have very good dental insurance, and for the right provider, I'd consider paying out of pocket. I will look into all of these. Much appreciated!

Joseph Sexton on Navarre Avenue in Oregon. Very nice. I actually fell asleep during a root canal! There's also laughing gas, if you want it. And stereo headphones for any music you desire.

Sounds like there are a lot of good dentists to choose from on this board. Good luck!

Just make sure your not late with a monthly payment, even if you don't receive a bill, they send it to collections even if your less than a month behind.

The dental center of Northwest Ohio is pretty good, especially if your insurance isn't great, they provide services on a sliding fee schedule, however they don't have the laughing gas.

I liked Dr. Latham, and went there for many years, but we switched insurances and had to find a new provider.

Lately we have been going to Corner Dental on Talmadge, and I like Dr. Scott Kalniz. He is friendly, funny, and my pain-related visits have been mostly painless. Also, this is the most efficient health-oriented place I have ever seen: everyone wears headsets, and they save a ton of time from not having to walk around looking for the dentist or by using those interruptive page systems. The hygienist will speak something like this into her microphone: "Finishing up cleaning in room 4," and a minute or two later the dentist shows up almost on cue.

As someone who values his limited time, Corner Dental gets you in and out on schedule with little waiting.

Any dentist who isn't stingy with the nitrous oxide.

I've been weeks late (thought that was a few years ago),and never had it go to collections. Maybe something new.

Dr. Eleanore Awadalla on Talmadge, right next to J Alexander. I come back to Toledo to get my dentistry done by her. She and the staff are excellent.

Tod Armbruster in Maumee. He is very patient with me (I'm a bit of a baby about denitsts due to some bad experiences as a child), good with kids, and is very friendly as is his staff.
