has anyone ever made the trip fm vegas to the grand canyon via their own auto?
It sounds like it'd be a fun trip actually. Considering my experience in visiting the desert is very minimal...

Yeah it's not a bad drive, just make sure you don't get to less than a 1/4 tank of gas, not always gonna be by a gas station on your trip.
Yes, by motorcycle and car, both north and south approaches. I like the North Rim experience best. One gets to go through the Virgin River Canyon and see the Mogollon Rim. It's pretty desolate. In addition to gas, take a six pack!
Made this trip with my grandparents many years ago. DO IT! It's very cool. Like Dbw said, make sure you keep the gas tank full, and it's a good idea to take food and a few jugs of water along for emergencies.
And if you rent a car, check it out thoroughly before embarking. When we went we had a rental car, and one of the tires blew. Only then did we look at all of the tires and found each one was bald and showing the belts--and this was from a nationally-known rental car chain (I forget which one or I'd sell 'em out right here). We had to change the tire in the middle of nowhere. Looking back, it seems kind of cool, but it didn't seem cool at the time. I know a pre-check seems like common sense, but I was just a kid and my grandpa had a bad habit of not thinking ahead when traveling...
Part of the appeal in this part of the West is the many elevation changes on these twisty roads. I'm excited for you Billy!
Great drive. I did it in the middle of December a couple years back and it was beautiful.
If you can afford it, take the dam tour.
Note: not the damn tour :)

in googling around, I think Im leaning toward what they call the 1 week grand circle.

not that we'd need to adhere to it totally -
Funny timing. I just posted on my blog last night that I'm looking into a trip to the Grand Canyon in April. We go to Vegas pretty regularly so I'm comfortable flying in there. I'll be interested to see what you end up doing.
My husband and I rented a car and drove from LV to the GC a couple years ago, just before Thanksgiving. It was amazing! Very cool.
The south rim is more accessible from LV than the North; be sure to check that the roads are open during this time of year. Around Flagstaff they can get a lot of snow. I believe the North rim is closed well into April or even early May. And gas up!
I've driven the route a few times. It's definitely a fun time. And yes, you want to avoid the North this time of year. Have fun and post a few photos when you return.
