Local nostalgia

Emptyed out a cardboard box and found a section of the Blade dating from March, 1986 that was on the bottom. Here are some tdbits from it:

STOCKS- DanaCp 33 /34; OwenC 51 7/8; OwenIll 67 7/8; Champin 28 3/4; GMot 79; TolEdis 25; Macy 64; GnMills 77 3/8; StdOil
46 3/4; duPont 72 5/8, ColGas 39 1/8; AmMot 4 1/4

SINGLE-FAMILY HOUSING BOOM- New York (AP) There is a boom in housing in certain areas of the nation, set off by general price stability, rising incomes, and falling interest rates.

> In Detroit, once considered the capital of the "Rust Belt", single-family permits grew last year at a 45% rate, highest of any big city. Weston Edwards, an executive of Loomis & Nettleton, calls the move-up market the strongest housing trend of all.

> Near Princeton, N.J., garden-apartment condominiums that cost $95,000 when new resell two months later for $115,000.

Realtor economists suggest that if interest rates and inflation can be held in check- and their long-range forecasts suggest that, given wise fiscal and monetary policy, maybe the [up and down] cycle will be blunted.

NEW CAR PRICES- '86 Ford Mustang $7095, '86 Ford Escort $5888, '86 Ford LTD Brougham $10, 789, '86 Ford Pickups $6095-7695, '86 Jeep Grand Wagoneer $20,993, '86 Jeep Cherokee $13,796.

SPORTS- Macomber smothers Coldwater in the Class AA basketball play-offs with a 55-47 victory in front of 6,745 at Centennial Hall. Chester McFadden led the Macmen with 14 points. Other scorers were Jones 12, Jackson 11, Johnson 11, Shy 8, Cummings 2. (The Macomber basketball coach was Bart Schroder).

I love reviewing old newspapers. After reading this, I had to search for my saved Blade issues. Included: the birth of my children: 1998, 1996, and 1994. A gem of an insert for the opening of Portside. The moon landing, which was even before I was born. Fun looking through.

When my mom moved into her new home in 1992, in the attic, she found a bunch of old Life magazines the previous owner had left behind. They were from way back in the '60's, including the one from when man first walked on the moon, Kennedy's assassination, Marilyn Monroe's death...

I was born in 1961 and was able to page thru the issues that came out the week I was born, and Mom said she could never remember for sure, but she knows she did have a bunch of magazines there in the hospital, so she'd be 99% sure that one of them would have had to been a Life magazine.

Interesting looking thru the magazine my Mom would have been looking thru while she was there waiting for me to be born, and the days after. (they kept women in the hospital for a couple days back then...)

Also - if you want to visually see some of toledo's history, here's a great site from the Toledo Library called images in time:
