There is a new restaurant in Waterville called The Neighbors (on Dutch near 24). This is not a chain but a local family. The food is good and the staff is nice. The place is family friendly (which is important to me) but not totally kid centric.

Are the owners friends of yours? Your post seems like a free plug to me. JR can moderate his site however he chooses, but I didn't think he spent the time and money so that people could post free advertising.
Actually, no. I am in no way related to or even friends with the owners. I don't even know their names but we were told that they are a local family.
We stopped one evening for dinner and we enjoyed the restaurant. I thought that I would share our experience here with others in case they were looking for a new place to try or had driven by but were afraid to try it.
Is my post any different from others that talk about which bar to go to on the weekend? Or from the ones discussing pizza places in downtown? We have had those threads here too.
Nick, you yourself have plugged local events: "Jack Schilb is playing acoustic guitar at the Coffee Gallery in downtown Waterville from 6-8:00. That's not a bad way to catch your second wind and get ready for Friday night."

Since The Neighbors is a local, independently-owned business, then I don't mind someone, even the owner, plugging it. Their menu states :
"We are Waterville owned and operated (not a chain or franchise)."
I should add to my previous comment that it's been rare, I think, that the actual owner of a store has self-promoted here. My preference is for customers to talk about the business.
Word of mouth is generally how many locally owned businesses get up and running. I think it sounds like a great little place to eat with a menu that's decently priced! Thanks for the info MM!

We live close to "The Neighbors". We will not be trying them out because we heard 3 negetive comments from 3 different sets of friends on 3 different occasions. All 3 related to the food being inedible. And in one such experience 1 couple had a 30 minute wait to place an order because "the kitchen was backed up". (This was on a Friday night and there were 4 tables of less than 5 people each). Oh, well, I guess that is what you get when the owners are from the BIG city. And I am not talking about Toledo. I guess they are too upper crust for us po folk around here. Maybe they are thinking that they need to bring a little culture our way.

Hello, Scubachick, welcome to the forum. Have you been reading TT for a while or are you new here? Unfortunately, when the first and only comment a person makes is terribly negative, we are on troll alert. I hope that you take the time to read and comment on other threads and contribute to the forum.
Are you a local? Where did you hear that the owners are "Big City" because I have been told that they are locals and the place, while nicely decorated, is definitely not "upper crust".
I can only speak from personal experience but the few times that we have been there the food has been good and the staff friendly. We had one issue with timing of a kids meal with the regular meals but it was not a big deal and nothing more than we have had at any other restaurant in the area.
If you live close to the place, I would encourage you to give it a try and then come back and give your opinion, not that of your friends. Thanks.
The scariest thing about that post by “scuba” is that it is obviously someone who posts here under another name. How psycho that they don’t have the balls ON AN ANONYMOUS INTERNET BOARD to be legit. They must have fish to fry with the owners, maybe they didn’t get that busboy job they had their eyes on.

Actually Ryan, I am a white collar executive not that this should matter. As you say this is anonymous internet board. And acutally, I am short on time due to working 50 or more hours a week at my job and volunteering for a non-profit around 20 hours a week. I, like many people today, are short on time because of multi-tasking and I appreciate when friends give me a heads up on ill prepared food. But opinions are like aXXholes, everybody has one. Considering it is your money, you are welcome to spend it the way you want. I am just a person that likes consistancy in food results as well as a decent bang for my buck. If the food isn't awesome 80% of the time, to me, it's not worth taking the chance that the night I will be there the night that it is decent. I would rather invest the time and money in cooking for my family at home. Regarding your other comment, Ryan, about posting under "another name", I was not aware that "MaumeeMom", "Nick44", or "justsimplyholly" were the "real names" of participants. Maybe you need to go back to busing tables. Regarding your comments MaumeeMom, I am from Waterville and the owners have origins in both New York & Chicago and have been overhead saying that they are trying to attract the people from the area's million dollar homes not the small town people including their neighbors right across the street(the factory workers of Manville). I automatically have an issue with this because,I am originally from a small town, Maumee, transplanted to Waterville after marriage. In addition, I believe, people are people and should be measured by their value as a human not the value in their wallet. Therefore, it doesn't matter if they are a busboy or a doctor, a non-profit lawyer or a stay at home mom.

Oops,regarding the question from you MaumeeMom my first comment being terribly negative. I am more of a listener than a talker. I am on this site to read comments from others to better plan my available time. Also, because, I am on many times in the early a.m. and it is nice to take a break and read some of the interesting comments. I was taught to only speak when I feel I can make a geniune contribution not to talk just to hear myself speak.

I ended up at this site by accident while doing a restaurant review and listing a new restaurant for their site. I was actually listing The Neighbors and this link popped up. Since this is an old thread not sure anyone will see it or even care but...I have dined at The Neighbors a few times. I agree with several opinions on the place. It is a nice place, the food is good, a little high for family dinning since they do promote that with the kid friendly area. There are not a lot of things on the menu I would order myself but yet what I have had was good. If something is not edible then it should have been returned to the kitchen and I'm sure they would be happy to fix the problem. They do get a lot of business at dinner time and the service has been slow when I've been there but anywhere you go when it is busy it can be slow. I have always had friendly service and found all to be very willing to do their jobs. Nothing wrong with wanting to provide an upscale dinning place for those who want to have it but if it is not for you then don't go. I'm just surprised at the negativity, arguing and hostility I read hear between people because of a restaurant suggestion made by a person who enjoyed her dinning experience. Sounds more like some just wanted to argue over their personal stands on issues.
