Any good movies out there currently?

between our work and school schedules, my wife and I are pretty busy but this friday it looks like we'll have a rare friday night off together and are thinking about the movies - but is there anything out there worth watching currently?

Ive asked around but got nothing back but thumbs down reports...

"good" can mean a lot of different things depending on your interests.

My wife and I both agreed that Hanna was one of the best movies we've rented this year:

Contagion was pretty good as well:

I just saw The Artist (at Levis Commons). I would recommend it to anyone. It's a good story with comic elements.

I missed We Bought A Zoo because the Blade's review was very negative. Then later I found out it was a good family-level film, not terrible. It may still be playing at the Maumee Indoor by Friday.

Another rental worth a look: Winter's Bone

If you go on Wednesdays to any of the 3 Rave theaters, it's only $6 even in 3d.

Saw Journey 2, was cute and had fun but more of a rental.

Contagion is pretty good. The Help is great, as is Winter's Bone. I haven't seen Martha Marcy May Marlene yet, but it sounds like something Main Lady would like and that I could sit through.

Moneyball is very good. If you haven't seen Winter's Bone I'd pick that one above the others.

Coffee, I might be mistaken but I think the Rave $5 deal is on different days at different theaters. 3D movies would be extra ($8), they told me. It's still a great deal, and those prices are good for evening shows, too.

Also, I think the movie lineup changes on Thursdays. I wonder if the Academy Awards will give new life to some of the movies that played here a few months ago. It would be nice to have another chance to catch them on the big screen.

Martha Marcy May Marlene was great. Take Shelter was even better.

Do NOT go see Star Wars in 3D. I forgot what an atrocity The Phantom Menace was. And the 3D didn't feel 3D at all.

That said, I'd still consider going for the original 3 movies, just to see them on the big screen.

viola: that might be right. It use to be Tuesday when it was National Amusements and for a while Rave kept it. What I posted is at least true for the Fallen Timbers location. Might be different or the other two. So best to check ahead of time.

"The Vow" was a good movie, in that I respect it. But saw it on Valentines Day and was a bit depressing when expecting a romantic comedy with my girl.

"The Secret World Of Arrietty" looks promosing if you're an anime fan. Studio Ghibli tends to make top rated shows, like a Japanese Pixar.

"Chronicle" meh, rental, the best parts where in the commercial.

Nothing out right now really has me anxious. But looking at this years line up there are some nice movies coming out. Can't wait to see "Prometheus" at the drive-in :)

Oh if you like action and if it's still out Red Tails was a really good movie.

Well, it's a story that's been told before, but I agree with INeedCoffee, Red Tails was a good flick!

I'm not sure if it's actually out yet, but I did see previews of Human Centipede 2. Now that is quality entertainment. lol

and it's streaming too... i think both netflix and amazon on-demand. i'm not going to watch it though... the first one was bad enough!

Confession: I've never watched any of the Star Wars movies.

re: The Human Centipede - I heard a synopsis of the original on the radio when it first came out, and just hearing about it was bad enough. No way would I ever be able to bring myself to watch that movie or any sequel. Yikes!

toledolen_, perhaps the double post was for extra emphasis. ;)

I suppose I'm stubborn since I got through childhood without seeing the movies. Not many people my age can probably say that they haven't seen any of the movies. LOL

(Obviously I'm aware of most of the major characters and general storylines, despite never seeing the films. It would have been difficult to get through childhood in the 80s and even college in the 90s without picking up some general knowledge of the movies.)

No recommendations for The Descendants? The wife and I finally got to take that one in. A very good movie, but tough.

posted by TheTalentedMrC on Feb 28, 2012 at 06:49:39 pm     #

mom2: don't feel bad I didn't see any of them either till Episode 1 came out then my friends had me marathon the original three.

It's a good show but don't understand the hype. Think most of the umph behind it's status is nostalgic value. It's that cool movie you saw when you were 5 and were first exposed to nice FX.

So, like myself if you see it as an adult and 20+ years after it came out you lose that value and judge it purely on storyline.

Is anyone else into HBO's Treme'?

Watched the first season and part of 2nd, it was OK. Frankly after The Wire, The Corner, and the Iraq miniseries, I expected more of the writers/producers/directors.

I was thinking about a movie this weekend too, thanks for the rec's! Last weekend we saw Silent House and now I need something good to wash it out of my brain.

Warrior was a FANTASTIC movie!!! I had no desire to see it at first but after numerous recommendations I gave it a shot and I absolutely loved it.

Stay away from the movie Drive.... I wasted 2 hours of my life on the terrible movie.

I thought Drive was fantastic.

Hugo was solid... I thought Drive was awful too. The whole movie was nothing but a bunch of random scenes with hardly any dialog. For a movie about Driving there were one actual Drive scene. I felt like the movie was made of all the scenes good movies cut out while making the final edit. I just don't get what people liked about this movie.

taliesin52 thanks for responding

This is my first exposure to these writers/producers/directors although I’ve heard great things about the works you mentioned.

I began watching Treme strictly from a post Katrina New Orleans point of view. I’m only on Ep5:S1 and love what I’m seeing, especially the music although I’m not seeing a strong story line; at least yet.

Saw "The Hunger Games" tonight at the drive-in very very good.

Hunger Games was ok. I expected more meat. That tends to happen when I read a book before seeing the movie.

21 Jump Street. So funny! So insightful about youth issues! Great explosions! And the all-time best drug hallucination scene I've ever seen. I might want to buy this one on DVD. Seriously.
