Two YE OLDE places opening up downtown soon?!

we've talked about this a little bit before, but there is a new spot opening up at washington & huron called "YE OLDE COCK & BULL TAVERN" which is a silly name, but it's cute... novel, and will get people talking, which is great.

but my wife just pointed this new news story out to me: http://www.northwestohio.com/news/story.aspx?id=725047#.T07kKXJRfE8
which states "YE OLDE DURTY BIRD" coming back to the original durty bird location (where JED's most recently was)

what are the odds?!

two "ye olde" places opening up blocks from each other? super weird! :)

Uhhh. That sounds a bit silly. But hey, it's still two new places opening and not closing!

Learned this last week: "Ye" should simply be pronounced "the", because the Y is the remnant of an old letter called the thorn, which was used for the "th" phoneme. After a while the thorn just started looking like a lowercase Y.

There was a golf shop called "Ye Olde Golf Shoppe" in Maumee for a short time in the late 70's early 80's. Even as little kids it it made us laugh.

Where there's a pub/bar/boozer in such close proximity... I predict that the Infamous Toledo Pub Crawl, will be created !

And ,then established as the Number One , crawl for everyone one Earth, to attempt!

BigWillard = ProfProvo, again.

A shining example of the insane, nonsensical ravings of the right wingers, and of how nobody on that side is willing to stand up to the extremists and say "YOU'RE NOT HELPING!"

maybe bigwilly was making the musical reference "kick out the style bring back the jam"... which i completely agree with.

i like bar names that reference london pubs and taverns - i don't know if they have any link or if it is an attempt to harness the flavor of its name-sake or was just a random choice but when you hear the name you can be sure that it is a bar.

new bars... more bars... the neighborhood is surely saturated at this point. it will become a matter of loyalty for some, pricing for others, and a trend for still others. it may make the blarney moderate their prices which will be a good thing. how will the cock and bull feel when their customers can't drive down the street to get to their bar because the blarney closed off huron?

additional bars are hardly the ideal in order to create a residential-mixed use neighborhood as opposed to an entertainment district (which rarely succeed long term).

keep in mind, downtown is also getting more residential

I actually don't agree with the idea that the new bars downtown are competing for the same pool of customers. Toledo isn't like most cities, where downtown is the epicenter of the entertainment options. In Toledo's case, rather than more options meaning a thinner spread of the same patrons, I think more options actually means a larger number of people coming downtown to enjoy them.

An article in the Blade a few weeks back (and I think it was actually Jim Mettler who said it) mentioned how people don't realize just how active downtown is becoming - that even during the winter months, hockey was pulling big crowds into downtown. I think that's a strong indicator that downtown Toledo really is on the rise, and people are finally starting to realize it's potential. The more options we have for people to come down and enjoy, the better off we'll be.

I heard that Ye Olde Massage Parlour was opening up a branch downtown, but I haven't been able to confirm anything.

Right, McCaskey?

absolutely upso, understood. but even given the demographics of the people who live downtown and the people who "visit" downtown, the number of bars that can be supported is finite. there are reasons the durty bird closed, the various bars that have failed in commodore perry, murphy's, etc - its is not economic development for new bars to come and close down another bar somewhere else in the neighborhood. as more residents do move in, it will support more of everything... in time, even a grocery store!!

i also do not mean to dismiss people who come downtown to "visit", that is people from other neighborhoods stopping on their way home or even coming down specifically for evening events and bars. on the other hand, theses visitors treat a neighborhood much differently than actual residents - too often downtown and the WHD and Uptown have been treated poorly, as a care-free playground, speeding, parking ANYWHERE, being loud even around residential units, etc.

people come down for fun but must remember this is people home now.

For the record, I got it too BigW. Makes me sad to think of the great album rock FM formats that were in existence.
