I'm no help since I have never had a home phone.

But out of curiosity, why do you want a specific number?

ohio bell became ameritech became sbc became att!

it took me 2 1/2 hours on the phone with 5 different people to get the simple answer that the number i had hoped to get was not available. using their regular "new service" number, which was only found after searching through 10 - 12 internet pages at the att site, connected me with a call center in the phillipines and the several people i was passed among there could not get over the language barrier, were unfamiliar with the concept, or could not find the information. i was even told point blank that there is no way of searching if a number is available.

finally i called a number associated with equipment problems - that person put me in touch with a call center in yet another country... but that person was able, after a few minutes on hold, to tell me it was not available.

Does anyone answer when you call the number?

Wow this is something I know!!!! You want to do a NPA NXX search. Go to http://www.area-codes.com/ and on the left put in area code (419) and then prefix/NXX (53*). If you gave me the last number in there we can find it. What you want is called a vanity number. If the company that has it (ATT) and you are not in that service area for that number (LATA) you have even less of a chance of getting it. It gets tricky after that.

I was a customer service rep & plant cable assigner for Ohio Bell back in the late 60's & early 70's. It would only have taken us a couple of minutes to determine if the phone number was avialable and assign it to you. How things have changed. . . Glad
I'm as old as I am because I can't take too much more of this change that is not for the better.

I have to work with ATT, sorry let me rephrase that, I TRY to work with ATT on POTS issues or circuits and I cannot stand them b/c they take so long, and are not sure who does what and the issue falls to their back burner and automated systems, and foreign call centers and....ARGH!

If I understand correctly, you're trying to see if your number is available or something along those lines. You can look up any phone number here and see who it belongs to: http://www.phonelookup.com/

NO telco is fun to work with on POTS or Centrex, and worse if it's a data circuit, because the data side will ALWAYS blame the Customer Premises Equipment or anything else except their leg of the circuit, never mind if it's the last mile and the smartjack can't be looped/is completely dead.
