so... for the third time my recycling bin was stolen from my building. the city requires us to call the non-emergency police number to report it stolen, which is fine, but they also still charge us $60 for a new bin. there is no point in reporting it stolen... they are not going to do anything about it. and cans are primarily only stolen in poorer neighborhoods where they can least afford them. on top of that, the city does not allow you to mark you cans so they can be identified easily.
i understand losing the cadillac garbage service but this is ridiculous... what happened to automation making collections cheaper... having serial numbers and chips in the cans so bins can be tracked?
this city...
Weird. Any idea why they are getting stolen?
My bins are marked with our address. If the city doesn't want you to mark them, then they shouldn't charge you to replace them.

Oh, just paint your address on the damn thing. If some twit from the city shows up and fines you, feed the story to the local media, including the fact your cans are always stolen and a $5 can of paint prevention made a lot more sense than paying $60 pop every time a punk wheels away your cans.
Supposedly, you can put your house address on the cans using adhesive numbers, but those will just peel off.
Here's what I'm wondering: If these darn things are chipped, then if your stolen bin(s) is/are detected at the wrong address, what are they doing about it? Returning your bin(s) to you and refunding your $60 to you that you paid for a new one?
Use a huge sharpie and if they ever complain to the point of you getting in some real trouble (which I totally doubt, but you can never be sure) you can always wipe it off with thinner.
We marked ours with our address as well Big white letters, not sure what my wife used to do it, but no one ever said anything.

sorry about the double post, not sure why it happened.
i think my cans get taken by scrappers on their way over to the recycling places over on lagrange
