Berdan Building deal is off. Developer bewildered.

John Carney (was there ever a more revealing surname?) expressed his "bewilderment" at news that the city has called off its involvement in developing the Berdan Building. Toledo's part in the venture would have been to draw on HUD funding to finance development. The city would also have been on the hook for the full amount if the venture were to fail.

I have had the distinct displeasure to know John Carney. It is not a bad thing this deal fell through because he's the type of guy you would want to count your fingers after shaking hands with him. You ever meet some guy who you would never want to do business with? That's him. Maybe somebody in the city hierarchy wised up to him.

So, you throw a lot of accusations without much support. Care to express why you feel this way?

Not that I think the deal made sense, but I find it funny that he is coming out and stating that the city is lying about how they handled the situation.

Even if he is a slimeball (not saying he is), I would still probably take his word over the city's.

I don't know many of the finer details surrounding the issue (like what kind of person he is, what went on behind closed doors, etc). All I need to see is that they were only willing to put up 5% of the projected cost for this project. Pass. Every single time, pass. I don't care if it's Louis Lesser, if he's only committing to 5% of the project, walk away and wait for something better.

I'd like to see the current owner of the building mentioned in the article. Not any word about how they've completely neglected the building, the roof is falling in, glass falling onto the sidewalks, etc. i have to wonder why the media isn't going there..

The whole Blade story was solely to paint Mayor Bell and his administration in a bad light, because bell doesn't pay proper tribute to the Block's and to Bell. You can expect massive negative coverage of everything Bell does, even when he does it for the right reasons. The blade has a long history of endorsing deals that have proven costly to the city.

(Shouldn't try to post and talk to the wife at the same time).

Not sure which one is a worse deal: Berdan or the Fiberglass Tower.

Tell them to pay the 100k in owed property taxes before they leave town.

I don't think the Fiberglas is a bad deal. They're putting up a 3rd of the funds, and they have a tenant for half the building lined up already.
