Yep, Seed Swap already happened. But you can go to the Perennial Plant Exchange May 5th at the Original Sub Shop, 402 Broadway, from 10 to noon. Organizations usually have plenty of vegetable plants to give away (for free- no need to swap anything).

There's also a Wood County Plant Exchange at their fairgrounds, Sat. 4/28 from 9 to 11:30. Call OSU Extension 419-354-9050 for Wood County event

Someone tell their landscape and turf club members that the patio area behind the culinary dining room needs a major planting overhaul.

I had occasion to have lunch in the culinary dining room (food was great!)and looked out over that patio area and it was pretty sad. The weeds were nicely highlighted against the cigarette stub mulch though.

Upso, I think the rare and unusual trees they have might be Truffula Trees. :-)

OnePlainPerson: Sadly, the LTM Program has no involvement over that area. It's maintained (or not!) by the grounds staff for that complex. The LTM program maintains one small outdor area only - a perennial garden adjacent to the greenhouse. All else is controlled and maintained by College ground personnel.

Those are absolutely horrible hours. I have a flexible job and even for me it would be hard to justify driving all the way to Owens during the workday. Has this been successful in the past?

This is the 10th year. Yes, Its been successful. I agree that the hours could be better. Many of the students who attend Owens and who also organize, manage and run the plant sale, attend classes during the week and work nights and weekends. It is by and large a student endeavor with strong faculty involvement and oversight.

The good stuff goes pretty quick. Usually folks are waiting when the sale starts. This is especially true for tree and shrub buyers. Owens has a cult following for that stuff because of the hard to find cultivars and varieties.

There are some real bargains. The hypertuffa planters with succulents are amazing. Many of the plants in the container pots are not commonly found in nursery pots locally. Dont expect to see a lot of petunias.

It was pretty good, but I got there around 10:00.

Thanks to all who came today. Some of you mentioned TT. It has been thus far the most successful plant sale ever. Potted plants are dwindling. Trees and shrubs nearly sold out before noon. We took orders all day and there will be a new truck in early tomorrow morning with fresh stock. The second day of the sale traditionally is slower so with fresh stock arriving the tree and shrub selection should be good.

What was amazing were the bulk sales - 15 roses, 6 arborvitae, 24 ferns and so on. Equally refreshing were the folks who very knowledgeable about what they were buying. Some other tid bits - one couple drove down from from Ottawa Lake MI and although the sale was advertised to start at 10:00 there were folks there at 8:00 scoping out the truck as it was being unloaded.

Again, thanks. Whether it was 24 ferns or 1 begonia every sale was appreciated. The hands on experience in crop selection, growing and selling is a huge teaching tool. The proceeds benefit a whole host of educational opportunities for the LTM students.
