Kazmaier's grocery store closing

I used to work not too far from Kazmaier's and would pop in occasionally when I needed something quickly. (Sometimes it's nice to run a quick errand in a smaller store, as opposed to the undertaking of "picking up a few things" in a spread out megastore.)

Sad to hear that one of the few remaining long-time family owned grocers is going out of business. Guess that's a sign of the times though.

So sad to hear another local grocery store closing. For those of us who can't or don't want to navigate a super store it will have an impact.

I go to the one on Holland/Garden all the time. I drive by it on the way home for work. I pick up dinner quite often or milk, bread, beer, etc...it's so easy. Then again, I've never bought a weeks worth of groceries from the place either...

Sad. Shop there often.

That is sad. Nice market with quality products. I must say that I've not seen many customers in there over the last few years. I just chalked it up to the fact that I was probably there after most people had done their shopping - typically between 6 and 7 when I leave work.

Bummer. First Fleegers, now this.
I better go to Monettes today, before they are gone too.

That is too bad. I remember going there a lot as a kid.

Have to point out an inaccuracy in the article, though. The store may have a Maumee mailing address, but is actually located in Toledo.

Amen on Fleeger's, justread. Now it looks like Anderson's is cutting down on their hardware section. pffft...

Ditto. I drive by two Kroger's to shop at Kazmaier's. Looks like I'll have to go a bit farther to Churchill's. This won't help the florist next door either - Emery's Flowers. I highly recommend Emery's.

I just started shopping at Kaizmaier's the last few years because it has excellent meats. Their produce section was also a showcase for vegetables grown in the U.S. It doesn't seem the IGA type of grocers are doing well. Millers, a small grocer in Whitehouse that was similar to Kaizmaier, closed last year. Shocking because it was there so long.

Sautter's in Sylvania still seems to be doing stable business, for those of you who are interested in shopping a local, independent grocer.

My guess is that Sautter's is next. I hope not. But I wouldn't be surprised.

Kroger is looking for a place on Conant? Makes me wonder what they're going to do with the one on Glendale just off of Reynolds as well as Perrysburg Kroger (both of which are overdue for remodel/expansion).

^^ I was wondering about that, too. My guess is they will close the one on Glendale.

My question is where on Conant are they looking? The street is full unless they mean Reynolds, possibly at the location of the old Chevrolet dealership.

Old Chevy dealership is exactly right. Article in the Maumee Mirror makes it sound like its all but a done deal.

I hate to loose the Krogers too. I live about halfway between Kazmaiers and the Krogers... I guess I'll be shopping mostly at Meijers now...

Foodie - Where can I find the article on that? Do you remember the date? Any help would be appreciated.

I had always heard Krogers wanted to move from Spring Meadows to where Farmer Jack's used to be next to Menards. But that talk has been for 3 years.

Krogers on Glendale has been my mothers grocery store for the last 30 years (or thereabouts)--basically ever since it opened. She has been told by several employees that the store will close sometime in the next two years.

But of course, if they dont have rook for furniture they dont consider it a real store. Frankly I would love for a real grocery store to come back to town, like Food Town used to be, I dont want furniture or a bank outlet, a cafe in store or any of that crap, I want a store that carries the brands I want to buy, not replace them all with their brand that they make a huge killing on. We used to get certain things from Krogers, then we had to get them at Meijers, they no longer carry them and have to get them now at the Food Town in Temperance. Lord help us if they decide to no longer carry the brand item we want. Oh the 2 items are Brooks brand ketchup and Bennets chili sauce. Kroger has probably lost about 600 dollars a month of our business since summer of last year because we no longer appreciate their method of operation anymore. There are very few items we go there for anymore and if they drop those items I guess we wont have to go there at all anymore. Meijers and Food Town are pretty much satisfying about 95% of our shopping needs now and we even dropped their pharmacy for prescriptions because they were screwing them up as well. Oh well someday they might get it through their heads after everyone stops shopping there they screwed up, only thing they seem to understand is money.

Linecrosser: That's the same reason we don't shop at Kroger's. Their brand selection is utterly horrible. Not much else to choose from except the house Kroger brand. Meijers is some better, but their meat is atrocious. I'll stick to Sautter's, Churchills and the Anderson's.

I'm a fan a lot of Kroger brand products. I'm always amazed that they have three different Kroger's on Glendale. All three of them need updating. The Glendale/Detroit Kroger is the nicest of the bunch and it still needs work.

I've lived in Toledo since 2004 and never stopped into Kazmaiers. I have thought about it, as I drive past the Perrysburg Holland one every night on my way home from work. Just never stopped. Sad to see a local business close though.

There are some Kroger brand items that are good, cheese crackers, canned vegetables, their meat is better than Meijers, I prefer Food Town for meat Churchills, Sautters and Andersons are too far away to shop at for us.
I can remember when Kroger would get different brands for you, you just had to ask the store manager and they would order it. Far cry from today where they get max profit from their own brands and have replaced just about every thing on their shelves with their brands, even moving the named brands to different shelves to maximize their own sales.

Molsonator: I'm thinking it was in the issue dated around March 15th - we may still have it at the office. I'll check on Monday or if I'm there over the weekend.

Molsonator: I checked all around the office and the issue that had the article regarding Kroger possibly locating at the old Chevy dealership has apparently gone to recycling. Sorry..........

And some of that is the only way they can compete with W*lm*rt - who have been cutting other brands out as well as their normal knife-twisting the brand-names to give them special deals.

Word from employees is Kroger at Glendale/Reynolds is closing for sure, no idea if Kroger sprung for the car dealership or possibly the churchtheatre.

oh wow. that's going to leave a big hole over there. bummer but there is definitely way way way too many grocery options in that part of town.

Talked with Churchill's and it is going to take Krogers 2 years to open the store at Dussel and Reynolds/Conant.

Agreed, upso... I've never understood the point of having three Krogers in that stretch of Glendale between Reynolds and Detroit.
