As listed above, the play Ubu Rex (Ubu Roi) by Alfred Jarry will be peformed at the University of Toledo, Feb 15-24, 2008.
Ubu is a nobody. He is fat, stupid, greedy, cowardly, and evil. The play also offers parodic adaptations of situations and plot-lines from Shakespearean drama, including Macbeth, Hamlet and Richard III. Like Macbeth, Ubu murders the king who has helped him on the urging of his wife, usurps the throne and is in turn defeated and killed by the dead man's sons;
At the premiere, Jarry opened with a long speech, much to the boredom of the audience, and after the first word of the play ("merdre" - the French word for 'shit', with an extra R; some English translations use the spelling "shittr" or other variations), a riot broke loose. The performance of this play was forbidden after the first night. To avoid this problem, Jarry moved the production to a puppet theatre.The University of Toledo Center for Performing Arts is offering the following (pdf) :
