Masala, or Star of Toledo?

Ive been told that Masala has a very good dinner for 2 that provides a nice sample of many things. Never been to either one tho...

I've heard some mixed reviews on Star of Toledo, so I'd go with Masala.

I have also heard a number of good reviews for Masala.

Indian Jewel!!! It's BYOB-you can actually bring a good bottle of wine and they'll allow you to drink it there. Service can be sort of slow, but for a romantic evening, shouldn't be a problem. Everything is great there, and I've recently discovered Gobi Manchurion, which is spicy cauliflower, it is amazing. Every chef in the area says it's the best Indian food in Toledo or anywhere within 200 miles.

I just ate lunch at Star and am not impressed. I had chicken vindaloo. The service is a little slow, but I'd tolerate the slowness in service because I think the real problem is in the kitchen. The kitchen is slow. Plan on a long wait. The quality of the food is okay, but it isn't great. My vindaloo was good, but it was a long way from the best vindaloo I ever had. The ambiance is not romantic or conducive to a nice, relaxing evening.

I have not tried Masala or Tandoor, so I'd recommend that you go somewhere else unless you have a compelling reason not to. Me, I'm going into that area again in a few days and I'll eat at Masala.

And, by the way, go to Google maps, search for Indian Jewel and read few of the comments. While I wouldn't base my entire decision on a half-dozen or so comments from Google, I'd be a little wary before I tried Jewel.

The Indian Jewel is great but I definitely agree the service is slow. I haven't tried Masala yet but between Tandoor and Jewel I would choose Jewel.

billy: where did you end up and how was it?

we went to Masala and had the non-vegetarian dinner for two (medium spice). it was awesome. we'll be trying other local indian restaurants very soon.

I work with a lady who is from india and she says for local she likes Tandoor the best, but for a bit of a drive, she also likes Shalimar up in Ann Arbor.

she also recommends Deepam on Central.

Shalimar - good to know. I'm up in A2 quite often.

Glad you and the other half enjoyed Masala.

Never been to (or heard of) Deepam. Have to check that one out too.

deepam is pretty good. it's more of a deli / carryout, then someplace you'd dine in. they have a nice little grocery set up as well. prices are on the high side, but everything comes across as VERY fresh and healthy. their homemade breads are terrific

I'm a huge fan of Masala. I used to love Tandoor, but became very ill once after having the lunch buffet and haven't been back. The food and service by far make up for what Masala lacks in ambiance.
