Steve Taylor Kia Farting Ad: A New Low

I have long found Steve Taylor's ads for his various vehicular enterprises to be a bit annoying, but the current spate of television and radio spots highlighting the "Got Gas?" promotion are incredibly stupid. It seems I cannot turn on the radio or cable without hearing Steve Taylor playing the colonic calliope.

Am I a prude, or do you agree that these ads among the most idiotic to hit Toledo's airwaves? Discuss.

I hate all commercials. That's the exact reason I record all my shows and fast forward through the commercials.

I have no thoughts or opinions on your prudishness or lack thereof - I suggest you ask Mrs. HistoryMike and not write about the answer.

Steve Taylor's advertisements have always been irritating, but this one is vulgar. I'll walk before I buy a car from Taylor.

It occurred to me after I posted that I am probably a million miles away from the demographic segments Taylor tries to reach in his ads. Perhaps the folks who get sucked in with the low price point ads (with the requisite blocks of thick, tiny-font paragraphs of disclaimers and conditions) are the sort who still think "pull my finger" is the height of comic brilliance.

And yes, madjack: "vulgar" is a perfect adjective to describe this.

It got our attention!

Glad I'm not the only one that finds the ad annoying. And a +1 to madjack's "vulgar" description.

Can't stand the ads. It makes me never want to buy a Kia.

They are car ads. Since when do they have to be anything BUT annoying.

The ads are formulaic and are produced by a national agency that has already tested them.

Stupid - yes - but keep in mind ToledoTalkers are a heck of a lot more sophisticated.

Actually, I sat next to this Taylor kid at a Perrysburg bar the other night. He seemed like a very, very nice young man. But, as a business man he’s savvy enough and self deprecating enough to, as Molsonater said, appeal to the targeted Kia shopper.

He doesn't care what you think...the ads apparently work:
"Steve Taylor of Taylor Kia has been named to the Kia President's Club. He was one of 30 recipients among 755 U.S. dealers for the club, which recognizes dealers who achieve the highest overall sales volume and outstanding customer satisfaction.

Byung Mo Ahn, group president and chief executive officer of Kia Motors America, said the honored dealers were integral in helping the company break sales records in 2011.

Yep, I heard it was one of the highest selling Kia dealers. Kudos to the Taylor Family.

Read or listen fast to the small print. They only have "four at this price" and you can bet your gas they are gone when you get there. One of their ads also touts "til Monday only" and has been saying that for more than a month now.

The Taylor Kia commercial are stupid, and are embarassing to me, a Kia driver. Historymike, I take offense that you are implying Kia shoppers are of some sort of lower life form. I did NOT want a Kia (or any other foreign car for that matter), but 2 hours after we dropped our "2nd car" off at the junkyard, the transmission went out on our Town & Country. Knowing we had high school tuition coming due, my husband and I looked at used cars and leased USA made cars before reluctantly heading over to Kia "just to see". A number of co-workers had purchased Kia's and while they obviously are not top of the line cars, the co-workers were not having any problems with them.
(We are all working professionals by the way). Being this was just going to replace the "2nd car", we actually ended up with a Kia. Personally, I did not care for Taylor's pressuring tactics and their follow up with an error on the window sticker, but as far as the vehicle goes I have had 0 problems with it, and we've had it going on 3 years now. I had issues with the 2 previous new cars I purchased weeks after purchasing them. I contacted Kia direct on the window sticker issue and got 5 years of oil changes/tire rotations for free. I think Taylor cheapens Kia.

"I had issues with the 2 previous new cars I purchased..."

llz - I agree. You have issues.

posted by Molsonator on May 11, 2012 at 01:36:04 pm     #

llz - since I have been around long enough to have read lots of historymike's posts, I interpreted the "lower life form" comment as a little tongue in cheek.

Especially since he occasionally comments here about the older Hyundai that he drives. (Thus potentially having the same embarassing association with the Taylor auto groups as you mentioned.)

I have never owned a car that was not manufactured by one of the Big 3. However, I do have the Kia Sorento on a short list of cars that I'll potentially consider when I make a purchase this fall. I'm semi-relucant about it, because I've heard similar things about the high-pressure tactics at the dealer. But, I need to investigate the best deal I can get for what I have to spend. Sigh...

Thanks Mom2. And historymike, if you didn't mean to offend, then I apologize for being so thin skinned. I admit I have a hang up driving the foreign car and having those Taylor commercials blasting at me every morning further rubs it in my face. Mom2, I was warned of the high pressure tactics Taylor uses, but I apparently I neglected to warn my husband. We arrived at Taylor @ 8 pm and were literally signing the papers at 11:15. I knew what they were doing, but they lured my husband in on a tight line. I actually left him there (maybe that was my mistake!) twice because I could see what they were doing. In the end, it worked out, as they obviously wanted our business. We got a decent deal and AFTER that I negotiated a moon roof and video system (which also got me an upgraded headliner) without them adding any more $$. And to top it off, the car has been great.

Molsonator, care to elaborate?

Ummmm.... the earlier comment was not a slam against Kia drivers. I drive an old Hyundai Accent, the precursor to the Kia, so in a way I would be mocking myself if I was targeting Kia drivers.

The point of my earlier comment was that Taylor Kia runs ads offering all sorts of sucker deals that sound impressive to the clueless. Remember the "two-for-one" deal they used to run, or the ubiquitous "$199 down gets you in a new Kia" schemes? To someone with half a brain, those deals could not possibly true as implied, yet lots of folks wander over thinking they can get a brand new car for just $199 down, or that they are going to get two brand new cars for $14K.

My oldest son was convinced he was going to get a new Kia for $199 down a few years ago, and he was really pissed that: a) he did not qualify for the terms, since part of the gimmick was the buyer needing near-spotless credit for the deal; and b) the low price point did not include a host of other fees, meaning he would have needed almost $1500 down to get a new Kia.

Historymike, understood. When I had my issue with the window sticker (it said my vehicle had heated outside mirrors, which it turns out, it did not)Taylor tried to sweep it under the rug. When I contacted Kia direct, they worked with me on a resolution and during that time I commented on the screwy tactics Taylor uses. They said they were "surprised" and reiterated what some of the others had said, about Taylor being one of their top grossing dealers in the nation....

Not only are their advertisements trashy and annoying but try giving the Taylor Auto marketing department feedback then see what kind of disgrace the company really is. Arrogance and ignorance at its finest.

When I used to travel, I found that the very same commercial was used for other kia dealerships, just swapped out the "Taylor" for the local dealership.
I did find the "taylor gas" commercial even lower than some of my comedy.

It says more about the local demographic than it does about Steve Taylor. He is the PT Barnum in this equation, I suppose.

Reality is these advertisements work and for every 1 person who gets uptight about them, 10 or 20 or more are chuckling.

LCD and all that.

Not saying it's right but it works.
