Great Gyro at Mirage Diner - Lebanese Food on Central Ave.

Just had a wonderful experience at the Mirage Diner, near Food Town, on Central Ave. between Douglas and Secor. It's located pretty far back from the road, but highlighted with red neon outlines on all the windows.

The gyro (spouse's choice) was one of the best in town -- and he eats a lot of gyros, so he knows whereof he speaks. For $7.99, he got a fresh, tasty salad, a huge portion of rice pilaf, and a two-fisted gyro (plus basket of pita chips and pita bread). I had the lentil soup, which was nicely seasoned with lemon -- almost like a Greek avgolemeno soup, but with lentils. I could slurp a half gallon of it -- very tasty. For an entree, I had hummous and beef tips. The beef was soft and flavorful.

Grape leaves, kabobs, kibbie, and some sampler plates are all on the menu. Chili mac is also available, and I'm curious to see whether there is a Lebanese twist to it. We'll be going back soon to try more things. A point in their favor is that you can order a lunch portion even during dinner time -- at about half price -- and you'll still be served more food than you can finish.

The owners are very friendly, and both stopped by the table to check on us. Open from 11 to 9, Monday through Saturday.

Next time I'm over there I'll give it a try.

On my end of town -
The “gyro on the cone” at Sahara’s (corner of Dussel and Holland) is my favorite, but there Chicken Swarma wrap is a close second…

Viola, does this place have the gyro on a vertical spit? I like the gyro at J&G where the spit is visible when you walk in.

I grabbed one of the guys at the office and headed over for lunch today. It was very good! The Lentil soup is different, heavily lemoned. The humus was really tasty, especially with their pita chips. My office mate had the gyro and said the lamb was exceptional.

Thanks for the heads up. I love gyros too and enjoy trying out other venues. The gyro at the Grape Leaf Express on Monroe street is also very good and comes with an artful display of salad and rice. Their spinach pie, however, is awfull

Is this place in the place where the library used to be?

I think so (when I first came to town, the Sanger Branch was new & the other library had closed). There's a big furniture store taking up most of the plaza, behind a veterinary clinic and a small tire store/mechanic shop.

It's in the same section as the old Library. I use to have some great afternoon in that library when my kids were little. :)
I'm already trying to talk myself out of swinging by the mirage at lunch and picking up some hummus and chips. I mean really, how much hummus can a person eat in a week?

Wow. Have eaten at Mirage several times, and LOVED it. BUT ... did anyone else see this week's Blade restaurant inspection report?

Not comforting. Not appetizing!

While we're on the subject of rest. inspections, did anyone catch last week's inspection of Lee Williams House of Meats in the Point?

Just a few of the reasons I stopped going there decades ago.
