From the Detroit News:
Southeast Michigan may become home to a veritable Chinatown, a planned community of 415 upscale homes for Chinese immigrants, off U.S. 23 south of Ann Arbor.
The idea behind the proposal is to encourage Chinese investors to open businesses here and take advantage of in-state tuition at the University of Michigan, saving tens of thousands of dollars per student.
Sino Michigan Properties LLC, a U.S.-based Chinese investment firm, has purchased 220 acres in Milan and London townships — about 20 minutes south of Ann Arbor — for $1.9 million in cash, according to Milan Township officials.

Since this will be so close to Toledo, I wonder if it will affect any of the development plans of Chinese investors here?
Yeah, thought that was pretty interesting. Toledo gets in-state for UM, right? My sister go in-state tuition at Eastern, but maybe UM doesn't offer the same thing.
Anyway, I think it would've been cool if Toledo had gotten that instead. Tied it into the Marina District. Had a "Little China" right here in Toledo. Stroll over and have some authentic Chinese cuisine. And while it's a bit of a shock to a lot of Americans, since it's been us on the other side of it for all of our lives, anytime you can get somebody with more money than you to come live in your town, it's a good thing.
The in-state tuition only applies for Eastern. I believe it's some sort of an exchange where certain Michigan residents get in-state tuition at University of Toledo.
I grew up not too far from where this development is planned.
There have been some concerns about the secrecy of the project, since the sale of the property.
I think that some of the objections in that area will die down now that they have announced the intent of the project.
People knew that the land had been sold, but it was very hush-hush on what the purpose was going to be. That made people nervous.
very very interesting. the cultural landscape is going to be drastically different in this region 10 years from now.

I imagine the appeal is specifically UM, which which Toledo (and most other cities) can't compete.
Agreed. That's why I was thinking that, if Toledo were able to offer the same benefits for in-state tuition, we could parlay that to "hey, we already have Chinese investment groups working on projects in Toledo, so why not live here and make the short drive up to UM for classes!"
Johio83, I'm sure UT officials would just love that...

Sadly, the cultural landscape was going to be drastically different either way.
Let's not kid ourselves. UT is in no way competing for students with UofM. While I am a big advocate of UT expanding its student body, upping its standards, and basically becoming a higher profile school, it's like saying kids might bypass Harvard because Boston College is nearby.
"anytime you can get somebody with more money than you to come live in your town, it's a good thing."
I wholeheartedly agree with that. Sadly, way too many (thousands in this area alone) think that anyone with a buck more than them is to be reviled, despised and taxed out of existence.
Foodie, I agree with you. The train of thought that you speak of is the definition of a Liberal. Until this town can be rid of the Liberal mindset, then we will continue to suffer. And that suffering is deserved as far as I'm concerned.

The sky is yellow, the Earth is flat, and Hell is cold.
Crain's Detroit Business says this project has hit a snag. The project won't meet the US government's Immigrant Investment Program (EB-5) requirement that each $1 million of investment creates at least 10 permanent jobs. The investors didn't know how stringent EB-5 was when they started buying property. Michigan Economic Development Corp. officials say that they "are not actively working on this project."
What if the China is planning to build Kung Fu temples? They train an army of warriors which are subsequently unleashed within the US?

Can I get a "watch the off topic posts" over here, jr? Because if you want to flag me for going on about Teabaggy stuff, this mudslinging at "Liberals" is not much different. Fair's fair.
The only difference, ac, is that I can state my opinion without spouting pure hate and the f-word in every sentence. Maybe if you could actually express your opinion in a civil way you wouldn't have to be flagged.
Honestly, I've totally agreed with some of the things you've had to say lately, especially in the mayor thread until you veered off into the nastiness.
^True dat. AC, you make some extremely good points and have many cogent thoughts - not all of them but enough to keep my interest. But the vulgarity, name calling and outright hatred you express negates anything worthwhile you have to say.
Tone it down a bit and you may be surprised at the response.

This!
You make some very good and valid points but your attempt to be John Stewart or Bill Maher ruin anything you say.
Calling people names and belittling their opinion will never bring people to your side of the argument. Isn't that your end goal?

Well, neither should the complete stupidity in dell_diva's original post, if we want to be fair.
But in the spirit of this discussion, that was not to say dell_diva is stupid. Just that post.
Oh, my opinion expressed without hate and venom is considered stupid? Yeah, that's fair.
(for the record, dbw... comparing AC to Bill Maher with the "calling names and belittling opinions" is pretty spot on, as Bill tends to go into what I'd call Skip Bayless territory and say things that are probably more extreme than he believes just to get a reaction. However, if you're putting John Stewart in that category, I'm pretty sure you've never actually watched the Daily Show.)
I understand the concept, however, suppose someone built a subdivision for only upscale white people? What blowback would follow?
Well, I think it's a little bit different when it's nationals. It would be like having an American community in Paris or something, for people to go over and work. I don't think anyone would find that particularly odd.
Not odd at all. My uncle used to work in Milan, Italy and lived in an american only neighborhood.
"the cultural landscape is going to be drastically different............"
WhooBoy! I'll say. Just visit Vancouver B.C. to see HOW different.
The Chinese just bought the AMC movie theater chain. Maybe there will be a cinema in the new development! ;-)
The first movie shown with be "Dog Day Afternoon".

Hate and venom have nothing to do with stupidity. What a stupid comment!
