Moped Gang in Maumee Saturday

I was out at my Mom's house on W. Broadway in Maumee Saturday, and around 4:00 a pack of mopeds (nearly 20!) went buzzing by.
Looks like great fun; anyone know the lowdown on this gang of mopeders?

there are a lot of them around town. just across the street from us in the Old West End, there is an apartment building that has 10+ mopeds in the garage. Any weekend with warm weather will bring scores of these guys out, zipping around (very loudly) around the neighborhood.

i've heard there is an abandoned race track just north in michigan that they meet up at for races.

saw them at Hill and Detroit just prior to that. A JCPenney Pinto was bringing up the rear.

I think that's the Ottawa Hills biker gang, Heck's Angels. Were they wearing a winged frowny face on the back of their jacket?

Perhaps they are mods from 1963 who traveled through a wormhole or something like it. This was the coolest thing to do in London back in the day.

Are you sure it wasn't Lair Scott's group protesting the withdrawal of naming the street after Joe Wick?

Possibly the Dorais Velodrome in Detroit?

Just looking at some of the comments in this thread, all I can say is man, you guys are mean. Don't pick on/stereotype the people who prefer two wheels over four, you stupid cagers.

None of the comments here seem mean. (At least not in comparison to the old joke about mopeds and fat chicks..."fun to ride, but you don't want anyone to see you on one.")

When I lived in a better climate, I owned a little (49cc) moped that got me to and from work (about 3 miles each way) for about 2 years. Fun times

1/2 gallon gas tank. Fill up once per week. Gas then--about $2 a gallon in the area (making my fuel budget about $1-$1.25 per week). No vehicle insurance necessary on the moped...and my car (because I wasn't using it to commute) was on a "pleasure driving" policy (i.e. cheaper policy). I could take small roads and not get smashed by cars or struggle to keep up with a 35 mph speed limit. Parked up front at the building bike rack instead of endlessly circling for a parking space. Good times. I miss the $1 fill ups for the week!

And I didn't die on the thing. That's important too...

@justread: Ah yes, the JC Penney Pinto Moped. A beast I am proud to say I have intimate knowledge of. Endoed the damn thing more than once.

As I've posted before. Many comments are for humor. I'm the first to laugh at myself so if anyone else makes fun, let's laugh together. There isn't enough laughter these days. If a moped rider reads one of these comments and gets their feelings hurt, go to library under kid's section and read, "Sticks and Stones".

Mopeds were popular in the late 70s/early 80s, and now that age group is turning 40/45 years old, so it is not surprising that the nostalgia for their youth is reappearing in the form of a "moped gang."

Top speed 43 MPH, but that's headed downhill with a 15 MPH tailwind.

...that got me to and from work...

You mean to say that you actually rode it? You know, those things have a weight limit. How many years ago was this?

Man, the sarcasm detectors must really be broken around here. Probably too much time spent running around in those stuffy cages full of toxic fumes from all the plastic.

jr - Any chance of banning AC? I'm sure I'm not the only one who is sick of him hijacking threads with his trollish behavior and insults.

What can I say? I was a lean, mean, moped gangsta in those days...

No! Don't ban AC. I like his commentary. He keeps the threads from becoming boring and tedious, what with rehashing the same, tired arguments over and over again.

Besides, what about freedom of speech?

Yeah, the good old days... A kid down the street from me had a Honda 50, the one with the elephant ears on it. I think it would do about 30 MPH on a good day, but it was lots of fun to ride. And hey, when you weigh about 80 pounds it'll take you right up a shallow grade without straining too much.
