The make and model is irrelevant but thanks for the snide remark. The question is asking about an automotive electrical specialist in the Toledo area. An automotive electrical specialist should be able to work on any major make or model.

Good luck. There are several shops that can help you with a failed electrical component, but finding someone who will diagnose the problem will be very hard. Reason being, diagnoses usually takes hours and most shops will charge about $60/hour or more. In one day, not much could be found, but your bill will be growing.

WW, the "Christ" word makes this snide? Whatever. The point being, tell the make and model because someone out there may know a mechanic that knows your vehicle make/model very well and may be able to diagnose your problem in a matter of minutes. But feel free to possibly pay more than necessary to have your problem fixed.

Jeepmaker-I thought vintage electric only did work on components. I did not think they did diagnostic on vehicles, but I could be wrong.

I did take a riding mower starter there once that didn't work. I went in and asked them if they could check it to see if it needed rebuilt. They came back out and gave me a price. My fault but I never asked what it needed. I agreed, work was done, paid for, and item was returned. It still didn't work. Apparently, it wasn't the starter at all, but a bad connection on the mower, so they rebuilt a completely ok starter as far as I knew. I don't know if they checked it or not. They lost my confidence.

The problem is related to overcharging on an early 90s Chevrolet 305 V8 motor. When the alternator is disconnected from the battery the car runs beautifully, it just does not charge. When the alternator is connected it draws too much from the motor and causes it to stall during idle. The alternator and battery are new.

even thought the alternator is new, I'd replace it. I have purchased 2 alternators from AutoZone on 2 different occasions and both were bad. I returned them and got replacements which worked fine.

Where did the alternator come from?

Not AutoZone, wherever my mechanic purchases his parts and I know he despises AutoZone. We already replaced it twice in this line of diagnosis as initially he thought it was a bad new alternator, so he warrantied it out. Unfortunately it didn't help.

I'm about to the point where I am tired of the stress and ready to just sell the car. I doubt I have the time, money or patience to get it figured out at this point. When the dealer doesn't know that's probably a sign to jump ship.

Anyone check the voltage regulator? Don't know if it's part of the alternator on your vehicle or not, if it's internal to the alternator it is possible you got some bad remanufactured garbage.

There is also the possibility your battery is bad too.

Gee, if it runs good, rides decent, I'd be interested in it and just put a battery kill switch in it when I park it. Do let me know if you decide to sell it. I'm taking my piece of potatoe crap to a mechanic tomorrow to diagnose it with their computer to find out why it is destroying my transportation life.
I really feel like going back to the horse and buggy thing would be better. I hate working on my own vehicles.
