Inside the Powerplant (photos)

Inside the Powerplant.....there are so many photos that the insides will be 2 posts. It was massive in there, and the place all but a virtual maze of many levels and interesting sights. I'm glad I got to see it before the wrecking crew finished tearing the power plant down. It was a perfect day to be out exploring today, and I had 2 cosplayers following me who got in a few great shots 'Resident Evil' that I might post later.

There are tons of photos. If you want to see more you can find them all at: http://toledowastewalker.wordpress.com/2012/06/02/downtown-powerplant-demolition-toledo-ohio-part-2-of-3/

There will be more photos, I took over 200 in there. The black dot on the shots is something wrong with my sensor - most likely dirt. I have to take my camera into the service center in the near future.

The entire thing is being knocked down, correct? The plan for lofts apartments has been scrapped?

posted by BusterBluth on Jun 02, 2012 at 11:01:10 pm     #

Yup, it's coming all down as far as I know. Inside it was all demo prep. I can't see this place being used for apartments considering the dangerous materials that have passed through the doors and now saturate the place.

Linecrosser - ohhhhhhh thanks for the link! I dont have any photos I can put together to create a wrap around. All the same Ill keep it in mind for the future!

Later today Ill post another round of photos from inside. I took soooooooooooooooooo many pictures! That place is MASSIVE inside. We were in there for hours and didnt even see it all.

@upso - Yeah I know about that one (and it is awesome news), but I was always under the impression that this building was being discussed as a possible location for lofts years ago.

Has a masterplan for the Chinese development ever been released?

Very cool pics! Thanks for posting. I believe they plan to keep the stacks, correct?

Why would they keep the stacks?

posted by OhioKimono on Jun 03, 2012 at 07:53:51 pm     #

No idea. I think as a "reminder" that it was once a power plant (?) I had just heard that the stacks were to be retained and incorporated into the new design.

posted by Brewster on Jun 03, 2012 at 09:07:11 pm     #

I think the stacks have been ruled structurally unsafe. Bricks have fallen off the top of the stack.

posted by slowsol on Jun 03, 2012 at 09:09:24 pm     #

I can't imagine that the stacks would be safe as free standing structures.... not to mention, they would seem more like an eyesore. What is going to be built there, if anything?

No, ONE stack still stands, due to special arrangement, moron.

I talked to the crew some more today and learnd a few things that are worth sharing...

*The stacks are coming down. They are doing to do an xplosive implosion of the stacks. This will happen during stage 3 of the project, they are currently on stage 2.
*The demo is still around 8 months away from completion.
*The land is being cleared because a company wants to buy the space and develop it. However, they will not buy it until the land is cleared.

Did the crew invite you inside to take photos?

While I find these, and the countless photographs taken of Detroit ruin, interesting, I can't in good conscience support trespassing.

May 25, 2012 OhioKimono comment about the Acme Power Plant:

FYI - I just got access to this site legally to do a photoshoot. Photos will come in a week or so. I did get some shots today from outside the fence and will post them in a separate thread that I'll build upon.

I certainly didn't mean to accuse OhioKimono of wrongdoing. If that was how it was interpreted, you have my apologies.

I do have photos of the crew talking to me...just in case someone wanted to raise a fit. I won't be posting the picture of me and the crew for obvious personal reasons.

All the same..I do trespass a lot for lots of other locations. It just kind of comes with the turf. That being said, these guys were easy to work with and I will be visiting them several times over.

Here is a photo of me inside the area with the crew working... I am standing in plain sight in front of a machine in operation. If it's not obvious, I work in the construction industry.

Correction on photo info.... a photo I took of the crew while standing inside..

Clearly that's not a shot of me.

I'd love to watch the implosion of the stacks. Spouse says that in Huron, they've imploded an old grain elevator (in several stages) and thousands of people came to park & watch.

THAT would be a great downtown/riverfront activity for Toledo! I hope more information will be shared when the time comes. Seems like implosions often happen on a Sunday.

Just curious what you mean by "it just kind of comes with the turf"? Like the countless other "ruin porn" photographers out there, it's a deliberate choice.

There's no need to reply to my last question. No need for either of us to fall into the internet trap. You're clearly okay with your decisions. I disagree, but who cares?

Researcher, why exactly do you care if OK trespasses? She is the one taking the risk, so why the animosity?

posted by HickoryG on Jun 05, 2012 at 09:09:46 pm     #

Many, many, many people engage in this activity. There are many sites dedicated to it and many who even create guide and some over the years have been so bold as to do urban decay tours.

Yes, I am trespassing - I am aware of the risks and such involved. When I have dealt with the police in the past - it's always a very calm even headed situation that results in nothing but some questions and being sent back on my way.

If you don't care for the activity - don't engage or view. I regard this sort of thing as important on many levels. It's a life long passion that I won't give up.

Where do you draw your personal line of ethical behavior?

Perhaps it's a little more pervasive and damaging in Detroit.

I walked the Metropolitan building in downtown Detroit last summer. That was a scary adventure! You'd love it OK.
