Why can't those damn geese stay the hell off our land? Can't we round them up and stick them in a cute cage at the zoo where we can enjoy them how and when we want to?
Don't they understand that their poo gets all over the place and they should do like us humans and just dump it into the bigger bodies of water and not be held accountable? Geez, how rude of those geese.
I had a friend who lived on a lake and they had a company that dropped off a pair of swans with clipped wings in the spring. They'd keep the geese away, looked nice and produced a lot less crap than a ton of geese.
Toledo Botanical Garden had a pair of swans with clipped wings and they had no effect on the geese whatsoever. (The swans are temporarily residing in another location as the Crosby Lake Water Quality Renovation project will begin this year.) A wildlife relocation company was hired last year and the geese were rounded up and relocated. Don't ask me what relocation might have actually meant. I don't really know. Or care.
The geese made the walkways unsafe. The males would chase and attack visitors ( and staff) during nesting season. I've had them fly right at my head. They can hurt you. At Owens Community College they have a similar problem, although they haven't dealt with it. A women splipped and fell two years ago and was hospitalized with a concussion.
Canadian geese are said to like to be able to walk into the water, rather than fly in. So encircling the water with two low strands of wire is a pretty effective deterrent.
TBG tried to harass the geese by getting in boats and chasing them off the water. They tried chasing them off the lawns with golf carts. Did you know geese can laugh?
Don't kill the geese !!!! Next thing you know the Blade will list the deaths next to the dogs everyday in the paper.
Foie Gras
I live near point place and if you ever happen to drive down Shoreland you can see a ton of geese hanging out in peoples waterfront yards and the small boat launching area there. About the only thing useful in a goose is its liver.
Plenty of Canada Geese at Toledo Botanical Gardens. In addition, I recall playing golf at Tanglewood GC near the village of Dowling, Ohio. When putting on the green, we hoped the ball would not roll over a goose turd.
Geese are dangerous to humans, but chasing them off with a dog will be "humane and caring"?
I guess I now am starting to see why people love their zoos. They can choose exactly when and how much to interact with animals. Out of site, out of mind.
It doesn't matter how much crap, chemicals, and garbage we dump in the earth, but geese pooping and landing on our property is unacceptable.

You are absolutely correct. It was better when we shot them.
:)
My great grandmother had a "watch goose" at her farm. Scared the heck out of me as a little girl.
flinty - 99% of the geese at TBG are gone. Thank Heaven.
hockeyfan - Visit the Owens Community College campus and navigate the sidewalks around the poop. If you can. And as for a dog chasing geese there's no way in hell it makes a goose suffer. They just fly a few feet out of reach and laugh. The idea is to make them move too often to be able to feed so that they go elsewhere, such as the engine of a 747 in flight.
At our cottage, we've had some geese, mostly on our dock. But they aren't too bad. We roped off the borders of our yard, and that helped keep them off the lawn. Our dog also chases them when we take the ropes down. They're part of nature, so we just learn to live with them. It's just not that bad of a problem, really.
Smoked Canadian honker is nothing to pass up, and the way things are a person could hunt those geese with a tennis racket.
Chasing the geese around is fun for everyone and is good exercise for the geese. The dog has a great time... I'm going to see if HistoryMike will loan me some puggles. Maybe I can start my own business. At least I'll get dinner out of the deal.
Think they are out of season, and I bet you would need a hunting license to bag one for supper.
Do people eat Canada geese?
