Hearing: The American Muslim Response to Hearings on Radicalization within their Community

One of the participants is a Facebook Friend of Mine...
Her recent post..
Next week, June 20, I'll be testifying in Congress on the American Muslim response to the hearings on radicalization within the community. I plan to speak about the values I learned, as an American Muslim, to testify to the truth even against "your kin" (Quran, 4:135), rather than live in a culture of denial defined by face-saving and shame over difficult realities. I hope you can attend the hearing in person or via webcast.

This is rather brave of Asra Nomani and I wish her well.
She spoke last year at the UT law school...and is very involved with quite a few rights issues.
I admire her passion, her ability to articulate matters, and to discern.

Interesting. Good luck to her.

I don't think that all Christians (especially the Extremists) represent me, so I certainly acknowledge the fact that the radical, terrorist-type Muslims don't represent all Muslims.

Unfortunately, not everyone can accept that. It must be difficult to be a peaceful, non-radical Muslim in the US. Hopefully if more people like your friend speak out, there can be greater awareness and understanding.

That's certainly an unfortunate truth about people being unable to accept it. Whenever Dearborn, MI is mentioned in news articles, user comments seem to declare it a horrible place ruled by Sharia Law. I think it's safe to assume those people have never been to Dearborn.

I look at it like this. There are crazy people who do things "in the name of Christianity" that I find objectionable. (For example, that awful group that has the nerve to protest funerals and said that Hurricane Katrina was punishment for various societal "sins.")

If a person can accept that not all Christians support extremists like the Westboro church whackos, then they should also be able to realize that not all Muslims support the Muslim extremists/terrorists.

I can accept that not all Muslims are whacked out suicide bombers and I too have christian beliefs and think the Westboro nutjobs are stupid, if any one asked me I would say the same, what I dont see and maybe they just aren't showing it is much coverage of any muslim community coming forward to denounce the radicals in their religion.

I don't see many Christians coming forward to denounce the radicals in their religion, either.

Why should every Muslim have to constantly apologize and denounce every terrorist act committed by those who call themselves Muslims? I haven’t seen Christian churches denouncing Christian radicals like Behring Breivik…

I don't see every Christian denouncing any of their own who preach hate and intolerance... else we'd continually hear apologies from all the rest about Strayer and the Westboro Baptists. Don't even get me started on how the Protestants rip on the Catholic Church over the child molestation thing either. Last time I checked Protestants and Catholics were both Christians, the only difference I really see being whose number they dial when praying.

Nice to see how that whole Christian tolerance thing works out. You get to disown anyone you don't like who you think doesn't follow The Book like you do, but anyone claiming to be of a different religion is definitely a member of that religion no matter what everyone else who belongs to that religion says.

All religions do have people on the fringes. I worked in a church setting and witnessed many things I would consider crazy. And all religions have people who shouldn't be in leadership roles.

In my neighborhood we have people of all races and religions. What do we talk about? The same as everyone else. How we have the greatest grandchildren in the world, how the Tigers and Indians are doing this year, whether we like Michigan or Ohio State, the cost of gas, etc.

I personally think this world needs to go back and read what ever "good book" they follow. And read what it really says, not what you think it says.

Let me point out why you dumbfucks who bleat "LIBERALS!" and then claim to be best buddies with Jesus are hypocrites who are likely to end up in the Big Bad Burning Place:

1) Jesus was pro-peace (Matt 5:9, 5:39, 5:44). Whereas you dumbfucks were all "AMERICA FUCK YEAH" any time a Republican president went to war and relentlessly called anyone who was against going to war an America-hating LIBERAL.

2) Jesus was pro-separation of church and state and pro-taxation (Matt 22:21). But you fuckheads lose your shit any time someone dares question Ten Commandments or other Christian displays on public grounds... it's fine to spend government money on Christian God, but HEAVEN FORBID the church (or apparently its followers, to judge by the Teabaggers) be taxed.

Many interesting comments. Some I did not read because I could not get past certain words. It seems freedom of speech here includes free use of any English word.

Am wondering if sometimes actions carried out in the name of religion really aren't, they are culture based.
Examples include holy wars between countries/regions (which are often really tribal wars), gender separation during religious services..including which gender presides.
So maybe the hearings about radical Muslims are really not about Muslims? Because the Islam religion doesn't condone the actions about these radical Muslims?
I realize with religion it does get a bit perplexing...who is the spokesperson for a religion...even among Catholics (which I am one...maybe some would disagree!) there is disagreement about who really speaks for the Catholic Church..some say the pope alone..some say only pope with cardinals/bishops..some say it is the whole Church body..including us "lay people"....
Anyways, I am hoping some good comes out these hearings..if nothing else, an occasion for us all to pause and reflect what religion (or at least spirituality) is all about...and the (potential?) good it has
May Peace Be With Us all...

I agree with much of your post but the taxation issue in Matt 22:21 is just a representation of to not be so focused on worldly matters and to be more heavenly minded. To not be to wrapped up in the carnal and forget the spiritual.

Paul also understood taxes are part of living in a civil society in Romans 13:6-7

6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

BTW when it comes to taxation the Bible also says that Government shouldn't press the people to hard with taxes, speaking specifically of the "Year of Jubilee" where the taxes their foot of the tax pedal and the debts of the poor are forgiven (Leviticus 25).

It also speaks of greedy governments that take the wealth of the people for waste and pride (crony capitalism) where those connected to the King (government) are enriched while the people suffer:

1 Samuel 8:10-18

10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.

11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.

What you make with your own two hands is yours, you should not be punished for working hard “He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. (1 Cor 3:8)

“To impose a fine on a righteous man is not good, nor to strike the noble for their uprightness” (Prov 17:26)

Here is one for the "Jesus Occupiers" “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.” (Lev 19:15)

Ohh another for the "Jesus Occupiers" who preach the death tax “The prince shall not take any of the inheritance of the people, thrusting them out of their property. He shall give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that none of my people shall be scattered from his property” (Ezek 46:18)

And if you want to go all Biblical about the tax rate (which I'm not arguing in this post)... In the Old Testament the Israelites were required to tithe 10% of their earnings to support the Levites, which essentially you could think of as their governing body. (Deut 14:22-23; Lev 27:30-32 among many others). This was a flat rate for every citizen, rich or poor. It is also the true definition of fair. As a simplified example, you can compare two people. The first person earns $20,000 a year, the second $200,000. If the tax rate was indeed 10%, person A would pay $2,000 in taxes while person B would pay $20,000 in taxes. So the relatively rich guy pays 10 times the amount of taxes as the poor guy, but it is still fair because the rate is the same. Taking this into consideration I believe that some form of Flat Tax would be Biblically supported. That does not necessarily mean that the tax rate should be set exactly at 10%, but rather we should use God’s system as a pattern for what we do.

Many Christians would support more taxes if it really went to improving education (not teacher's pensions) and helping people, but generational welfare that gives those trapped in it little hope and popping up drone bases around the world, and building roads and factories in Afghanistan do not help the poor of our country.

Yes fake Conservatives like Mitt Romney are not the voice of the Bible, but to pretend the Book is full of "OH YES GET THEM TAX DOLLARS" is also a misstatement.

Also: for you issues like those in this thread have much less to do with actual politics and more to do with the sick fascination you have with stalking people. I can live next to anyone of any color, faith, or creed as long as what they do not interfere with my life, Liberty, or pursuit of happiness.

But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg. - Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting "Jesus Christ," so that it would read "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;" the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination. - Thomas Jefferson, Autobiography, in reference to the Virginia Act for Religious Freedom

So, where are all the Christians to denounce and apologize for the actions of this group?

Oh wait, apparently they all think that they HAVE to make every effort to convert people in order to save them from Hell and score brownie points with Jesus, right?!? And any effort to STOP them is an affront to their freedom of religion and speech, but if you DARE put up a mosque or other non-Christian or Jewish place of worship or you go around door-to-door spreading the words of Mohammed, Charles Darwin, Flying Spaghetti Monster, atheism, or the actual Founding Fathers like above, YOU'RE a sinner and going to burn in Hell for eternity PLUS you're a horrible person who likes nothing more than to harass Christians who go about their daily private lives. But it's okay for Christians to come knocking or spam my mailbox with flyers from CedarCreek or Strayer (and thanks for killing those trees in the name of Jesus, assholes) or put up billboards all over espousing hate.

I do believe Christ is the Savior and the way to heaven, and I do not believe that Allah nor Buddha are correct but I'm allowed to have a differentiating opinion. To have harmony we do not all need group think, diversity comes in more than skin color.

What I should not be allowed to do is use my beliefs to punish others who do not hold that beliefs that I have. I do believe in prayer in schools because I believe students should be allowed to express themselves and their faith, no matter who that prayer is spoken too. Exiling the things we don't like about other people because it makes us feel "queasy" is not the answer.

BTW went to the American Arab festival in Dearborn this weekend. Had a wonderful time with some friends and clients and the food was tasty. Also nobody tried to convert me to Islam or chop my head off.

I find a lot of the far right Santorums loves to quote the founders on everything BUT religion.

The clergy converted the simple teachings of Jesus into an engine for enslaving mankind ... to filch wealth and power to themselves. [They], in fact, constitute the real Anti-Christ. Thomas Jefferson
