New coffee shop opening in the OWE

we had a chance to check out the space last weekend, and they did an incredible job with the space. Looking forward to spending lots of weekends and evenings hanging out at Black Kite!

Thanks for the info, upso.

That's so close to where I work! I will try to make it a point to grab my morning coffee there some time once it opens.

Just heard about this the other day. This could be a really great thing for the neighborhood, and would be really convenient, as I'm frequently in that area.

I've actually discussed doing the exact same thing in that spot before. It seems like the perfect location.

awesome awesome awesome awesome

I would like to make note of this quote:

"The coffee shop could be a sign that Toledo's urban core is re-establishing itself, said Richey Piiparinen, a researcher at Case Western Reserve University who studies population shifts in the Midwest. Although Mr. Piiparinen hasn't conducted a formal study of Toledo, he said it could be following trends observed in Cleveland and other Rust Belt cities.

People -- especially young professionals and young people with families -- are moving back into the city's core. Once the core is full, they begin to spill over into the adjacent neighborhoods, which also have more room for families, he said."

That guy gets it, obviously.

I would loooove to see Collingwood reduced to two lanes (keep the on street parking) and spacious bike lanes installed. Let's help link OWE and Uptown/Downtown and facilitate more growth.

I drove around OWE after the Farmers Market on Saturday and stopped to check this building out. It's walking distance from Bancroft, Cherry, Detroit, and Central. Truly in the heart of a essential neighborhood.

A welcome addition to OWE! So glad to see them open and I can't wait to go there.

Pleas Please be open on Sunday's I've been wanting a Sunday morning coffee shop near home so bad and it can't hurt that there is a church on about every block in the OWE

I drove by on my way home last night...looks like it will be a nice place.

(Confession: I occasionally detour through the OWE on my way home from work & check out the houses. LOL)

Has anyone else checked it out yet? There were no pies at "Black Kite Coffee & Pies" but I suspect they are serving a savory hot-pocket thing, not dessert pies. In fact they had no desserts of any kind on a Saturday afternoon ... I hope this means they're doing well and selling out of all the good stuff earlier in the day. Nice coffeehouse atmosphere -- a mix of college kids, old West End residents, families with small children. Interesting thrift shop next door, too!

Yes, they use the term "pie" loosely, but I'm surprised they didn't have any sweets! We go there several times a week (we live a block away) and they always seem to have cookies, brownies etc above the cooler they keep the savory baked goods in.

From a post on their FB page from 5 hours ago: https://www.facebook.com/BlackKiteCoffee
Hey, friends! On today's menu we have these flava-kicking Buffalo Chicken Pies. Delicious breaded and baked thighs, skin-on potatoes, and fresh celery bits. All smothered in a tangy RedHot buffalo sauce :)

We also have our yummy vegan Japanes Red Bean & Sticky Rice Pies and Savory Carrot & Potato Soup to complete your soup/pie combo options. Bagel Bombs! Breakfast Bars! Fruit & Yogurt Parfaits! And a delectable assortment of goodies from EarthenDragon Bakery including Chocolate Toffee Candy!!!

^ No cookies, no brownies on my visit. There was a big pile of scones, but I was jonesing for some apple pie ... blueberry pie ... rhubarb custard pie ... etc. I'll catch them another time. The coffee was really good!

:) I think they just switched over to using local produced Flying Rhino coffee!
