Does anyone know anything about the Outdoor Amphitheater behind the police museum at Ottawa Park? I had no clue that it existed, but it looks like it could be a great spot for summer concerts. I have never heard about anything taking place there.
Amphitheater at Ottawa Park

I don't know the history, but I have wondered the same thing. The city website makes it sound like it was at one time.

Went there for an Arbor day event about 15 years ago. My daughter won a poetry contest and received a plaque from Carty. They planted a tree that day and she wants to go back to see if it is still there.
There have been summer concerts there - maybe as recently as last year.
When the Harvest Theatre group existed, I saw them perform a Shakespeare play at Ottawa Park in 2007.
They have 4-6 concerts each summer; Saturday evenings @ 7pm during July and Aug as I recall. Not sure of any efforts to promote other than a sign or two.
A few years back Harvest Theatre offered a two show run of The Taming of the Shrew.
My mother use to tell about when the WPA built that amphitheater and what a great addition to the city it was.
Anyone besides me notice that all the buildings in this town built by the WPA are built solidily and still standing?

Government money. No private developer can afford to build that way.
slowsol
As this was "before" my time I am just guessing on this. But during this time period were not things build better than after the war with the pre-fab rage.
Thanks for the info. I'll have to keep my eye out for info about things taking place there this summer.

Yeah. $4,880,000,000 initial line item in 1939. Found that here: http://www.indiana.edu/~liblilly/wpa/wpa_info.html
They don't mention it, but my theory is that by 1939 all of the best stones were used up.
Saw a sign up while driving past the park, and actually found info on the City website:
"Toledo's Ottawa Park concert series to begin July 7th
The City of Toledo will again offer an outdoor summer concert series in the Glyn M. Smith Amphitheater at Ottawa Park beginning July 7th. The concerts are free to the public thanks to support from the Ottawa-Jermain Park Board. All performances begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday evenings.
July 7, 2012 featuring the Gray Devils playing blues.
July 14, 2012 featuring The Pet Names playing indy rock.
July 21, 2012 featuring Glass City Steel playing steel drum.
July 28, 2012 featuring DeZire playing Motown.
August 4, 2012 featuring Bobby Holloway playing popular music of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.
August 11, 2012 featuring On the Beach playing pop/rock. "
I can remember many years ago seeing Thin Lizzy play a free concert there.
