Toasty Weather Forecast for Thursday, June 28, 2012

The forecast for Thursday calls for a comfy morning with low temps in the mid 60s. Then temps are expected to jump dramatically by 35 degrees to at least 100 by afternoon. Maybe the strong breeze will take the sting out of the temps. Hopefully, the humidity remains low like it has been. The word "humid" is not mentioned in the weather forecast below.

I assume our humidity will remain somewhat low, since higher humidity generally means more clouds, which, along with the moisture in the air, reduces the incoming sunshine and keeps our temperatures from exceeding the mid 90s. But with a forecast of 100-plus on Thursday, I'm guessing that we're going to continue to have clear, blue skies and no excessive humidity.

At 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, the temperature at Toledo Express Airport was 88 degrees, but the dew point temperature was only 43 degrees, giving us a relative humidity of 21%. That's low for us when it's that warm.

We've had several hot days in May and June, but I don't recall much humidity. Instead of hazy sunshine, we've experienced a lot of clear, blue skies on these warm days, which is unusual when we get hot weather. That somewhat resembles the memorable, hot, dry summer of 1988.

Toledo's record high temp for June 28 is 101 degrees set in 1934.

Toledo recorded a high temp of 102 degrees on Friday, July 14, 1995. I remember that day because the next afternoon, I was out cycling for some stupid reason when it cooled to a high temp of only 99 degrees, and we got hit by a strong storm.

Based upon the forecast below, it be will toasty for at least the next week.

Friday's forecast is interesting. It's not the mid 90s that's interesting. What is interesting about Friday is the forecast of northwest winds with temps in the mid 90s. I think it's unusual for Ohio to get temps that warm on a northwest wind. That's definitely a throwback to the summer of 1988, but I don't think we're in a weather pattern like '88, since southwest winds are forecast for today's 100-degree weather.

During the summer of 1988 in Ohio, we had several days with temps between 95 and 100 degrees and low humidity. I worked in landscaping that summer near Columbus. Nice. At least we began our days early in the morning. Also during the summer of 1988, we had some unusually cool nights because of the clear skies and low humidity. That summer, a strong high pressure anchored itself for many weeks in the lower Midwest or Central U.S., so we received hot dry air on northwest winds, instead of the usual warm, moist Gulf air on southwest winds. We experienced drought conditions that summer.

Ugh. Goning to be a long spell of hot temps. I hope you are right about the humidity, jr: high humidity can make these ultra-hot days unbearable. I am glad I finished all of the yard work yesterday.

It appears that we will continue to have low humidity, so it will be a dry heat, which makes it okay. I don't understand why a local weather person last night kept saying it would be humid today when the NWS never mentioned high humidity.

Here are some statements issued for the Toledo area this morning by the National Weather Service:

Fire Weather Warning
Statement as of 3:56 AM EDT on June 28, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect from noon today to 8 PM EDT
this evening for wind and low relative humidity for Northwest Ohio.

  • Affected area... Northwest Ohio.
  • Wind... southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
  • Humidity... as low as 23 to 27 percent.
  • Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
    Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will
create explosive fire growth potential.

Statement as of 3:25 AM EDT on June 28, 2012

... Heat advisory remains in effect from 11 am this morning to
8 PM EDT this evening...

  • heat index values... around 100.
  • Timing... Thursday afternoon and early evening.
  • Impacts... very hot temperatures and heat index values will
impact outdoor activities especially for sensitive groups.

Reminds me of the summer of 1988......(shudders at the thought). Still worked at the old Parkway plant. It was gawd awful hot in there. At the height of the heat wave, our plant was the only 1 of 16 owned by Chrysler that stayed up and running through it. You could easily sweat off 10 lbs in a shift.

Ack! I totally didn't even think about it being Thursday...my daughter is suppose to have a softball game tonight.

Wondering if Sylvania Rec will cancel games? (If the heat index gets bad enough, one would think they would?)

I picked a hell of a week to throw some grass seed down in a couple of bare spots. I watered this morning, but I'm going run home at lunch and water again for 30 minutes.

I noticed the news people saying "humid" several times too, jr. I was annoyed when Zac Pitts of WTVG talked about how "humid it is this morning" on the morning newscast. Maybe it just felt humid standing outside in a suit and tie, but so far it is tolerable.

Historymike, I had to run an errand downtown at 10, and I thought the humidity was ok too. And I'm particularly sensitive to heat/humidity combined.

"It's not the heat, it's the humidity" and "But it's a DRY heat" both work for me ;-)

The humidity was quite low yesterday, and so far this morning too. It might give us a taste of that desert "dry" heat, and make 101F feel downright comfortable...if that's possible.

In 1988 both my husband and I worked and I also was going to school 3 nights a week. Came home one night and our tropical fish had died in the family room. Forgot to close the drapes and the sun literally cooked them to death.

We got whole house A/C later that year.

I've been out and about this morning, and it feels decent. Light wind and definitely comfortable humidity. It's pleasant. And from an artistic viewpoint, the sky is purty, yet again.

If the humidity was supposedly high or uncomfortable, then by now at 11:30 a.m., we would have a dull, hazy, whitish, washed out sky with at least some small cumulus clouds, instead of the pleasantly blue-colored, clear sky that we do have. Today's sky is not as vivid blue as two days ago, which was amazing if anyone noticed. But today's blue sky looks like yesterday when we had very low humidity.

Today's dew point temps, however, are running a bit higher than yesterday. During the hottest part of the day yesterday afternoon, our relative humidity ranged from 20 to 25 percent.

Today's 11:00 a.m. weather at Toledo Express Airport:

  • Weather: Clear
  • Air temp: 85 degrees
  • Dew point temp: 58 degrees
  • Relative humidity: 40%
  • Winds: WSW 8mph

Yesterday, the air temp at Toledo Express Airport did not reach 85 degrees until 2:00 p.m. when the dew point temp was 45 degrees, producing a relative humidity of 25 percent.

The NWS, however, is still forecasting low humidity for northwest Ohio this afternoon.

Excerpts from the 9:28 a.m. Cleveland National Weather Service area forecast discussion :

no changes to this forecast package. i will leave the current
[heat] advisory in effect for the area. my concern is the low dewpoints.
dewpoints will most likely stay in the 50s to near 60. these dewpoints
will not add much to the heat index.

spc has added a slght risk [of thunderstorms] to much of the forecast area for this
evening. i believe the biggest threat will be after 00z and into
the tnght period.

with moisture limited so will keep the day dry and mostly sunny.

.fire weather...
went with a red flag warning over much of northwest ohio for this
afternoon and evening. the fuels are dry. the winds will be near the
criteria of 15 mph and the lowest humidity will be near 25
percent. the main threat will be grass fires.

Have the local weather people mentioned the red flag fire warning for northwest Ohio? It might be worth a mention, since we're in fireworks season.

It did warm up a little this afternoon. For a while, I didn't think we'd get close to 100 degrees.

Excerpts from the 3:17 p.m. Cleveland NWS area forecast discussion :

several areas of concern for this evening.
first is the heat advisory.
with a sliver of higher dewpoints pushing into northern
indiana and northwest ohio...criteria will be [met] in this area.

spc has placed a slght risk of severe thunderstorms over much of
the area tonight. the models differ greatly on the thunderstorm
threat overnight. the gfs is much more aggressive than the nam.
both models are having boundary layer problems with dew points with
the gfs having the most difficulty. the mesoscale models continue
to show some convection developing 00z-03z for areas cleveland and
east. at this time i will keep a chance of thunderstorms for this
area for this evening.

i am concerned by the pooling dewpoints over
nrn indiana and michigan. spc mentions a well mixed elevated layer
above the inversion. if thunderstorms do develop a few could be
severe. model guidance temps are likely a little warm for tonight.
with lower dewpoints...i will drop a few degrees off of temps.

Based upon the above 5:00 p.m. weather obs at our two local airports, our dewpoint temps are kind of high.

Summer of 1988 I was working at Davis-Besse. One man I worked with used to live in Phoenix, AZ; he'd lived there several years. Anyway, walking out to my car around 5:00 was brutal. The heat from the pavement was more than I'd ever encountered before, but Arizona Jim said that it was almost as bad as Phoenix in August. Almost, but not quite.

I'm in Sylvania Township and the thermometer registered 90 degrees at 4:30 today. I don't know what the high was, but I'm in a wooded area so I'm betting it was cooler than most other places.

At 10:00 p.m. it's still around 90 degrees at the airports and in the city.

Toledo Express Airport recorded a high temp today of 102 degrees, which broke the old record for June 28.

Break out the jacket for Friday. It's forecast to reach only the low 90s. Looks like cooler hot weather ahead.

Overnight... Mostly clear early this evening...then becoming partly cloudy. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms early this evening. Lows in the lower 70s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent.

Friday... Partly cloudy. Hot. Humid with highs in the lower 90s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.

Friday Night... Partly cloudy. Lows around 70. West winds 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday... Partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Hot with highs around 90. West winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent.

Saturday Night... Partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows around 70. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent.

Sunday... Partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Hot with highs in the lower 90s. Chance of rain 30 percent.

At 8:53 p.m. EDT, the Storm Prediction Center posted a mesoscale discussion that barely includes our area.

Excerpts from the 9:48 p.m. Cleveland NWS area forecast discussion

the short term forecast is somewhat difficult. there are no
significant features to latch onto during the period. the models
show several weak pulses moving through the flow...each possibly
triggering a few showers. i do not expected widespread
thunderstorms but isolated to scattered storms are possible.
