TMZ has got the story...and I'm sure much more speculation through the day:

TMZ has learned Katie filed the docs in NYC ... and wants SOLE custody of Suri.

We're told Tom and Katie have a prenup. The net worth of both Tom and Katie is around $275 mil, but clearly Tom raked in most of that.

We know Katie filed the divorce docs in New York on June 28, citing "irreconcilable differences." She is asking for sole legal custody and "primary residential custody" of the couple's 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

We're told Tom is "very sad" and "did not see this coming." We're also told there is some "nastiness" here, evidenced by Katie's move to get sole legal custody.

OK, fine. I'll be the one to throw out the first theory: between living in a paparazzi fishbowl, being made fun of as a "SEE I HAVE A WIFE I'M NOT GAY" prop, I'm betting this thing broke because she...a raised-Catholic girl from Toledo, Ohio...couldn't or wouldn't convert fully to Scientology (of course Cruise is a huge Scientology icon/member)--and probably did not/does not want her daughter inducted into the land of Thetans (note the move for full custody).

Plausible?

I will say this--this takes a lot of strength for someone in her industry. Cruise has a lot of power in Hollywood. Sad to say, but this personal move will come at a cost to her career. I hope she is getting good career advisors to navigate this with her.

well, I, for one, am glad she's getting away from that weirdo. Bet she gets her own life back and goes on to bigger and better things!! Rock it, Katie!

Not sure about that. Nicole Kidman went on to win a Best Actress oscar after she divorced Tom. I don't think he has as much power as people think. Any alimony/child support will probably be conditional on her not writing a book about him or saying anything publicly about her life with Tom. Just a guess.

I don't really care, but have few degrees of separation from the Holmes family. I hold them in high esteem.

Sure, Tom Cruise seems out there, but I'm gonna label Katie the same. Anyone who aspires to live in that world and then "hook-up" with a known wierdo can't be that level headed.
The saddest thing is the kid. Two weirdo parents and no chance at a normal childhood.

At least Katie is from a nice, normal family. Just because the cameras capture a certain side of Suri's life, doesn't mean that she isn't also exposed to some normalcy via her extended family.

Katie Holmes feared that husband Tom Cruise would ship their 6-year-old daughter Suri off to Scientology's hardcore elite Sea Organization, sources say.

Cruise's desire to send Suri to Sea Org, as its known within Scientology, was the last straw for Holmes in her decision to split from the "Mission Impossible" star, according to TMZ.

Holmes' feared that Cruise planned to ship their daughter off to the bizarre order, and felt divorce was the only option, the site says.

This comes as Holmes fears she can’t take one step without a Scientology goon following her every move in a heavy- handed intimidation attempt, multiple sources close to the actress told The Post yesterday.

I just had to paparazzi in from Los Angeles for lunch at my restaurant. They didn't seem to be having too good of a time. I asked them why they were in town, and they admitted that they've been stalking Katie Holmes mother! :-)

Katie Holmes may be newsworthy and notorious, but I don't think her mother is.

Great to know these guys can legally "stalk" a parent because of the daughter's chosen profession.

If I were a celebrity (or one of their family members) being hounded by paparazzi, I don't think I would be able to control myself. Alec Baldwin might be nutty, but if there were a bunch of guys with cameras in front of my building all day, I might get a little violent too.

Actually, I would hire my own paps to follow around the chiefs of TMZ, Us Weekly, etc. and photograph them all day long. Or maybe the paps themselves. They don't like that too much, as Joseph Gordon-Levitt found out a few years ago.
