Discounted, or better yet - FREE pet neutering?

Ive got some friends that've fallen on rough times, and that being the case, getting their female dog neutered is low on their list of immediate needs - BUT the dog really should be neutered.

Ive heard that there are organizations who will cover the cost of pet neutering. Does anyone know who they are or how to get hold of them? Our friend tells us she's called about 6 different places and cant find anyone. I suggested the humane society, and she told me they charge $80 bucks.

I highly applaud your efforts to get this dog spayed. The only low cost spay/neuter facility I know of in the Toledo area is Humane Ohio. They are located on Secor Rd between Laskey and Alexis. I think the cost for a dog is $55 ($65 if over 70 lbs). If the family is on federal assistance, the cost is $40.

Also, they sometimes run 'specials'. For instance, they recently had reduced prices for all black dogs.

In any case, I would call to double check their prices:

I think Humane Ohio is a great organization and I wish more people knew about it.

You can check out their web site at

You could also check with Stautzenberger College as they have a veterinary technician program that has/had some sort of program for this. I can't remember the name of the program, but it may even be less expensive than Humane Ohio (which is a wonderful group).

I took a male cat over to be neutered on Friday. Call ahead so you know what to expect. You have to be there by 8:00 AM, and it took about 20-30 minutes. There were 13 people there when I went in. There are numbers outside the door that you take, and they serve in number order. They request that you leave your animal outside in the car while you do the paper-work. They have a grant (unless it has been used up) that gives about $20 off per animal, I think. The cat I took in cost $25 for the neutering, and $6.00 for a rabies shot. I decided to also get a couple of other vaccinations they have available that cost an additional $15 each ($30 total). One is for Feline Leukemia that will need a booster at a vet's office in 3-4 weeks. Humane Ohio's mission is birth control for the animals so they aren't a regular veterinary service. They ask that you return at 3:00 PM the same day so they can instruct you in post-op care for your animal. They close at 3:30 PM, and will charge a fee for overnight care of the animal, or else send it to another humane society for disposal (if needed). Read the paperwork to know what is expected of you.

Yes, as a Planned Pethood foster home, we have taken several dogs to Humane Ohio to be neutered. Oldsendbrdy is correct - they are inexpensive, but always busy. Get there by 7:30 am and grab a number to get out quicker. If your pets have a favorite cage, bring them with it.

I just wanted to say thank you for the info on Humane Ohio! I have 3 dogs and the female needs to be spayed and I have been looking for options since the vets price was a bit steeper than I can afford right now. I'll be calling them tomorrow and making an appointment. Thanks again for the info!

DIY is an option, possibly. Not sure of the humane part of it nor the legality nor the ethics.

I know some rabbit breeders neuter rabbits themselves. And there's instructions available and materials to give your pets shots and whatnot.

I suppose if you're dealing with a large number of animals and you have confidence in such things it makes sense, but otherwise it might not. I think it would traumatize you if you screwed up.

I have some books on 3rd world DIY medicine and dentistry. Interesting stuff. It's like a crash course in Med/dentistry school.

Then there's all sorts DIY products like this:

Monday through Thursday appts. do we require an overnight stay. Drop off is at 8:00 am and pick up is at 7:30 am the next day. Please be patient when you call to set up an appt as it may take us a few days to return the call but it will be worth it! Everyone is welcome to bring their pets to Humane Ohio, we really focus on helping those who would not be able to normally afford getting their animals fixed.
