Toledo city council will vote tomorrow on legislation brought forward by the administration to take money from the general fund and give it to EOPA and local homeless shelters.
We are told each time the 3/4% temporary payroll tax comes up that it goes into the general fund to cover the costs of police, firefighters, sanitation, and other daily expenses to run the city. CIP dollars are used for roads and infrastructure improvements.
Mike Bell now wants to take $215,000 from the general fund to give to the shelters and EOPA. That means something else in the general fund gets shorted. I can understand how union guys would be upset after being told we don't have the money for them to suddenly be able to find it for EOPA. This money will never be paid back, it will not be there again next year when these organizations face the same shortfalls.
On top of this theft from the general fund the city wants you to pass a levy to fund recreation, one for the schools, imagination station etc etc.
Time to call your councilperson and make your voice heard whether you live in the city or not. If you work here that tax comes right from your paycheck.
General Fund Being Misused

Bell is your guy... Why not call him? You're station gave him thousands in free air time and advertising. Time for a little pay back.

fred, few questions
1. do you live in toledo?
2. would you prefer the 3/4% tax to include mention of $ set aside for the homeless in it's official mission statement?
3. would you not support the 3/4% tax if it did support the homeless?
4. would you support the 3/4% tax if it did NOT support the homeless?

@upso. yes, i would prefer it doesn't get used for anything but what it is chartered to be used for, i would not, i have in the past. Hope this answers your questions
I'd rather have taxes be used for the minimum services that only government can provide, and have charity do the good works part, like homeless and "underserved" people of all kinds. Government has no business doing what church and charity should, just because politicians like to pander and get political traction from dabbling in, but never solving, the problems of broken people.

It's just Mike Bell pandering to homeless voters.
The city needs to buy a van to pick the homeless up so that they can vote and are not disenfranchised. That is what the 3/4% was originally for, I think.

For less that 215K we could just charter buses and move all of our homeless people to another state. Problem Solved.
