McDonald's charges for water?

So I walked into McDonald's today ordered food and a water. They now charge for water and you can no longer get free water? I can understand if you weren't buying food and just showing up for a free cup of water, but I've never experienced a place charge for water with food. I've heard bars are required by law to serve free water. Is this not the fact for restaurants in Ohio. I haven't been able to find a conclusive answer. So in New York they limit how much soda you can drink and in Ohio we discourage water consumption? I declined paying for water, and if Wendy's or Burger King will serve me a complimentary water with my meal.....

Were they trying to sell you a bottle of water?

What rock have you been living under? Fast food places have been charging for water for years now.
It's not because they are trying to squeeze every little penny out of you. It's because every idiot wanders off the street and wants a cup of water. If you get one for free, they'd complain. Make it simple, charge everyone. After all, you are getting a cup and ice with it.
Besides, what are we talking about here? 50 cents? Not really worth the time I've spent answering.

Just make sure when ordering Fast Food you always specify "To go" regardless of if you are eating in or not. That way you avoid paying sales tax. Stick it to the Man!

Linecrosser, yes trying to sell a bottle would not give a cup with meal.

Per McDonald's 85% do not charge for water but franchise owners have the right to charge if they decide too. Customer service was very polite in explaining the policy.

Hockeyfan the rock is Toledo and the majority of places don't charge for water. The last time I was charged for water was in Italy, apparently I'm not the connoisseur of fast food restaurants that you are so congrats to you. If it wasn't worth your time answering you probably shouldn't have and it probably won't be worth my time next time I hear about a city employee stealing your 50 cent bottles of gatorade because hey it's just 50 cents right.

what a riot. Comparing being charged for a 50 cent cup of water vs getting $300 worth of gatorade and other things stolen. If that's the same to you, let's trade. I'll give you a free cup of water and you can get me my $300 worth of stuff back.

The last time you were charged for water was in Italy. Is that supposed to impress us? Is that why you left Italy?

At this point in time, there is no limit in NY on soda size. Technically, charging for water isn't discouraging consumption. If you've worked behind the counter at any fast food place you'd understand why they don't hand out water for free. There are many reasons.

Why do you feel that you're entitled to a free cup of water simply because you bought food there? Exactly how much did they want to charge you for it? Did you buy the food anyway without the drink?

Hate to be the one to tell you this, but nothing is free. Time to move back to Italy.

They started charging for a cup of water inside when they put the self-serve fountains in the dining room, duh.

At all the McD's around me (East Side, Northwood, and Genoa), they now charge 50c for the Dasani bottle that used to cost $1.39. I'll allow it. :)

Corporate owned McDonald's doesn't charge in town so I'll keep hitting that one up.

Hockeyfan your reading comprehension is off if you've deduced I'm from Italy, Your also not comprehending our 50 cent discussion. I no longer care if it is $300, $500, or $1000 because of your personality. You have the need to drop in, insult, and then announce how your time is to important to post. That's why I don't care about your 50 cent Gatorade anymore. I've heard your side of your hockey league, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn if you managed to get your league where it is by rubbing multiple people wrong along the way. You managed to take me from willing to write you're league a check to no longer caring in 60 seconds.

Nothing is free? Seen the free section on Craigslist? Ask an attractive woman how many free drinks she'll get offered. Your obviously able to post here unfiltered however you wish free too.

I hope Grumpy's will still kick in a complimentary water with my meals haha. I think Grumpy's has complimentary parking for their customers too.

You stated that you were last charged for water in Italy. I assume you had to be there to state that fact.
If my stupid post on a messageboard about complaining about a 50 cent cup of water turned you off about the hockey league, then you weren't into it anyway. Besides, what person complains about 50 cents, then wants to donate to anything? Go give it to someplace that really needs it like the Cherry Street Mission. BTW, they get "complimentary" food and shelter. Go try it.
If you want to donate to anything, do it for the right reasons. Don't base it on whether or not you got your balls busted a little for complaining about a cup of water.
Traveling into town and using more gas just to get your free water is hilarious. I hope the gas station doesn't do away with their "free oil checks". Ooops, how did you ever recover from that?
Whatever you do, good luck with it. It sounds like now grumpy will have to deal with your "complimentary" mentality. Oh boy, is he lucky.

Lastly, attractive women get drinks usually because some guy thinks a long island ice tea = sex.
The free section on craigslist rarely has anything worth more than a cup of water. That's why you're so familiar with it. And the posts on here are filtered. There are limits to what you can post on here.

I just loaded three coolers in the truck and then read this.

Does this mean that they won't fill my three coolers with ice for free anymore either? I haven't tried since 1974, but I mean... why would they change? Not sure what to do.

Dam.

Essentially, it comes down to a few idiots spoiling things for the rest of us.

When self-serve drinks became the norm, a few enterprising individuals figured out they could ask for a cup for free water. Then take the free "water" cup and get whatever beverage they really wanted without paying for it.

It's not unusual to see a nominal charge for a cup to get free water at a self-serve place these days. Not just at a fast food place, but anywhere that might have self-serve beverages.

I bet many of the McDonalds that don't charge for water either don't have self-serve beverages or are located in an area where drink theft might be less likely.

Did you really call McDonald's customer service to ask why they charge for water? And then research the law on giving out free water? Who are you, Grandpa Simpson?

How many people, while traveling, stop in at a McDonald's just to use the usually safe and clean restroom facility without purchasing anything?

On a personal note, if I stop to use a restroom, especially at an independant carry out in an out of the way place, I always get a soft drink and/or a snack. The cleaner the restroom, the bigger the purchase. Sometimes I tell them that.

I ALWAYS thank them for having a clean restroom and I always buy something, too. I've learned to ask to use the loo in a small place before I buy anything, tho, got burned once and let them know I was not happy. yeah, I know, it's just a gas station and it's not the clerks fault, but we all know self-serve pumps have cut into their profits. Maybe if the clerk passes along the message that people aren't buying anything if there are no facilities and the owner does something about it, then good for woman next in line. :)

Hockeyfan Cherry Street already gets money from me because it's run by Dan Rodgers who is a good guy and doesn't go out of his way to bust balls as you say. You give money based on the people because it doesn't matter how good the ideals of an organization are if the people in it are corrupt or arrogant know nothings.

You don't have to travel when a shop is next door to the other, or multiples ones are on your path as they ubiquitous.

The best part of all is you have an issue with me CHOOSING to patronize the owner that offers complimentary water and in your hockey league rant today you want to FORCE PEOPLE TO PAY TAXES to fund your hockey league as that is your option of last resort? BUY YOUR OWN PROPERTY and play hockey all you want.

posted by MrGlass419 on Jul 24, 2012 at 05:52:32 pm     #   1 person liked this

You're still upset about this?
I don't care if people pay their taxes or not. It doesn't help me in the least. I don't want anyone paying for the league except those who either choose to, or those who play in it. That's what it is about.
You don't know me or what kind of person I am. You're making assumptions based on a couple of stupid posts on Toledo Talk. Fine. News flash-that doesn't define who I am or what I'm about.
Hey, I tried to make living in Toledo better by doing something. I didn't want paid for it. I didn't want it given to me for free. I never pushed anyone for a place to play. I asked. I did the work. I paid for the repairs. That place was taken away for "Tribute Park".
I have looked at buying my own property. I can't afford it. Maybe that's why the league worked. Because it was never based on making money. Only providing a source of entertainment for people who didn't need a ton of money. I didn't want to run it like a business where the only thing that mattered was the bottom line. As long as what came was close to what went out, I was fine with it.
You must work for the city because all you care about is you, you, you, and your complimentary freaking water. You even had the balls to ask upso for some if you went to his place.
Whatever. Good, you win. You're right. I'm the money hungry lazy slob who wanted it all for free. I was never willing to give my time, effort, or personal funds to do something for more than just me. Don't worry anymore.
You and your city has taught me a valuable lesson. Always take the complimentary water, but never offer it. It's always about me, me, me.

Hunkytown thanks for the good laugh, you're probably right.

Hockeyfan- you're telling me I'm making assumptions yet you're really reaching. I'm not from Italy and I'm not your assumed city employee. I've never been a city, state, or federal employee and no one in my immediate family is a city, state, or federal employee. Asking Grumpy's for a free water? I'm not asking I eat there regularly and its policy. Let's move on and let this thread die.

Soft drink sales at fast food restaurants are declining. The "too much sugar and too many empty calories" message is having an impact. More people are saying, "Just water please". Soft drink sales are a major profit item for fast food restaurants (and profitable for other food establishments as well). Hence they now have to attempt to make up for the declining revenue stream.

I personally think that drinking water is a basic need when consuming food and should be free, similar to supplying restrooms and hand washing facilities.

You have got to be kidding. You're going to bend the ear of some minimum wage slave sweating her fat ass off behind the counter of a 7-Eleven and talk about clean restrooms and how you spent an additional $7.99 because of restroom cleanliness?

Madjack,
(1) 7-11 doesn't have public restrooms, usually.
(2) not sure I've ever spent $7.99 in a carryout for anything, but I will sometimes buy a snack food to go with my drink if its a small shop and it looks like they're trying AND they don't have an OUT OF ORDER sign on the restroom door just to keep out the riff-raff. a little effort goes a long way with me.
(3) sometimes it's the owner behind the counter, that does still happen you know, and a kind word of appreciation to a working person never hurts, no matter who they are. I've said 'thank you for working' to people who wait on me on holidays I'm off. See 'effort' above. :)

Almost all peer reviewed research suggests that diet plays less of a role in many diseases, particularly cardiac disease, than diet.

I have always eaten a high fat diet most of my life. My total cholesterol measured a few months ago was 110 and my LDL was an incredibly low 51. My physician describes my blood fat profile as one of a person living under starvation conditions.

Genetics folks. How long you live and the diseases you struggle with are largely a matter of genotype not Big Macs.

"diet plays less of a role than diet"

Might want to review your words there Sparky.

Also, there's a factor not only of WHAT you eat, but how much. If you eat a high-fat diet AND you burn off all that you eat during the day, that's different than gobbling 2 Big Macs and sitting on your ass.

Big Mac, Large Fries, Large Coke:

Calories 1360
Cholesterol 75mg (25%)
Protein 31g
Calories from Fat 480
Sodium 1370mg (57%)
Total Fat 54g (83%)
Total Carbs 195g (65%)
Saturated Fat 14g (68%)
Trans Fat 1.5g
Sugars 95g

If that's all you eat in a day, outside a couple snacks, you're probably not killing yourself. If you're eating two Big Macs instead of 1 and you're sitting on your ass all day, you're in trouble.
