Dolly and Joe's Barn Reopens

I just drove by the old place on Reynolds Road (1045 S. Reynolds) and saw they have reopened. Their sign says "Come in and meet the new owners!"

My neighbor said her grandparents used to eat there years ago... I was there once, and enjoyed the old-timey atmosphere. I'm curious about its new incarnation. If you get there before I do, let me know what you think!

My mom used to love the place, wheich pretty much means I wouldn't step foot into the place. :)

ew, great. And less than a block away from the motel with hookers. Could spend an entire evening all within walking distance. They need more of that downtown.

I know what you mean, Sensor. Eddie Lee's on Monroe Street has a similar old-lady vibe -- make that, ANCIENT-lady vibe. The old gals love what they love (and they get nicely dressed up for the outing, too)!

Had dinner there last week. They're doing major renovations to the dining room, which is temporarily closed. The menu is quite limited for now. They promise to bring back the same great steaks, etc.

The bar was packed and the pub grub was excellent. I had the clam strips. They were very, very good but the portion was skimpy and won't bring them repeat customers for the price. My husband had a hamburger and cole slaw. The hamburger was good, a freshly made patty, and the condiments were fresh. We both liked the cole slaw.

People were coming in constantly while we were there. Because of limited seating in the bar some left. The owners were on the premises, husband & wife I think.

At this time they get an A+ on the quality of the food. They get a C on value. I had an Arnold Palmer, the Hub had a Yingling Black & Tan. Beer selection is good. Mixed drinks I have no idea. Wasn't in a drinking mood that night.

While posting this we decided to head there for a quick dinner. Stay tuned.

Sorry Viola. I have hear they had great food there. It just reminded me of driving down Reynolds and just south of there on the same side of street that hotel/motel. Some woman was outside calling and waving to every guy that went by.

I think there might be more than one bargain motel nearby. I drive by in daytime, never see any interesting action. But it looks like the kind of area where you could find just about anything after dark. ;-)

I'm hoping Mr. Gamegrrl sees this thread. Maybe he'll take me there for dinner.

Dinner was great. The back dining area is now opwn and was about 80% full. The bar was about 90% full. I had the day's special, Lake perch( 5 pieces) with two sides for $12.95, tater tots and cole slaw. A two piece lunch version was available for $7.95. It was excellent. My hub had the deep fried chicken livers with one side, $7.95. He really liked the chicken livers. They advertise it as a basket. It actually comes on this tiny little plate and is a bit of a skimpy serving. I think they need to reprice their baskets and actually serve them in a basket. I had a plain, on the rocks margarita. Very well done.

They've done a lot of deep cleaning and refurbishing. So far we've had very good food and quick friendly service. I'm anxious for the full dining room reopen.

As to the hooker motel thing that comes as a surprise to me. In 66 years of living and traveling that stretch of Reynolds Rd at least three or four time a week, I've never seen any activity of that type, day or night.

It wasn't like a scene out of Pretty Woman or anything. And I used to live around there. It was really just once and I was surprised to see it. Maybe it was just a one time drunk thing, but she sure looked like a "Lady of the night" and was trying her hardest to signal people.

The blond girl? I thought she had car trouble or something. She looked real friendly.

Probably just a one time thing like you said.

What are their beer prices/selections like?

The beer selection is pretty standard. They do have Yuengling Black & Tan, which is what my hub drinks. Sorry, he doesn't remember the exact price. But since he is really tight with his money it must not have been any higher than he usually pays elsewhere.

The hooker I picked up didn't have any beer, let alone a selection. I have to wait until I was done, then I bought a six-pack on the way home.

You didnt have to wait long, right? Only a few seconds?

Holland- What is the vibe or design inside since the renovation?

posted by MrGlass419 on Jul 29, 2012 at 10:08:35 am     #

The focus is on the food, not on the decor. There's no real trendy design and its a little dark for my taste. Dark paneling, dark carpeting, dark booths. It would help greatly if they could wire some lighting at the individual booths in the back bar area. The open area with tables is also dark with dark tables and kitchen table type chairs for large parties. There were several large groups dining. There is an interesting classic car piece of art that the hub found neat. One thing in its favor is that everything is squeaky clean.

The waitress said that they opened up as soon as they could to get the Dolly & Joes patrons back ASAP and generate some cash flow. They are still in the midst of renovating. I'll withold judgement until they reopen the dining room. I hope they brighten it up.

25 years ago I used to wait tables at a restaurant near D & J's. All of us waiters, waitresses and a few bus people would hit D & J's from the time we got off work until last call. We used to sit in that knotty pine bar. I went there maybe for three solid years and never even know they had a restaurant. Years later I would go there for the broasted chicken. Good meal value - came with salad, bread etc - not ala carte'. Where Eddie Lee's on the west side of town serves a good value dinner of prime rib Dolly and Joe's did the same with the chicken.

Went yesterday afternoon, been meaning to check it out. Dad used to drag me there to eat years ago.

Sat at the bar with the girlfriend, beer and appetizers. Freshly made onion rings, tater skins with big pieces of bacon, both very good. Clam strips frozen out of a bag probably-but good and the basket was full. 4/5 beers, 3 appetizers, $26.

There's another bar we frequent since it's close and convenient-and they don't even seem to try with appetizers....we make jokes about it. The big red barn is much better.

OK fine, it's an old dated building and the bar is like the one in grampas basement. Hope they don't change a thing. It's like Schmucker's down the road, but in bar form.

Look all you "young folks" Dolly and Joe's and Eddie Lee's serve what us old timers like. We still go to Eddie Lee's and I'll put Dolly and Joe's back on our out to eat special places.

FYI - no one could survive on how little we go to a restaurant. Still have those genes which say "for that amount of money you could feed our family for a week."
