JAZZ...not at a club

AUGUST 3rd 9PM

L.A. Jenkins is a modern jazz guitarist and composer. His relaxed approach to his art is always about the music and the collaboration he forges with other like minded musicians. Originally a self-taught guitarist, he eventually studied music composition–specifically the harmolodic approach to song composition ala Ornette Coleman. His compositional work follows in the legacy of Anthony Braxton, Bill Frisell, Bill Laswell, Leroy Jenkins, Ornette Coleman and David Torn. He wishes “to advance the ideal of artistic freedom being unhindered by cultural assumptions about the individual and enforced as limiting expectations as it relates to categories and genre.” Thus he dips his “toe” (so to speak) into many styles of creative music. L. A’s, current interest is playing in the genre of modern jazz/free improvisation, ambient/ experimental, avant-garde, and film compositions. L.A. has collaborated with percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani, bassist Tom Abbs, and saxophonist Michael Cary/ Gary Thompson, drummer Ryan Jewell and multi- instruments Hasan Abdur-Razzaq to name a few notable collaborations

MATADOR fringes on the avant-garde and contemporary classical while also encapsulating the feel and passion of swing music. Consisting of multi-woodwind instrumentalist Michael Sachs from Los Angeles, drummer Jun Young Song from Seoul, Korea, and bassist Aaron Darrell from Virginia, MATADOR was formed through a commonality in past and interests. All three met at their undergraduate alma mater, Berklee College of Music; Michael on full scholarship and both Jun and Aaron World Scholarship recipients. While there, the three collectively studied with Terri Lynne Carrington, Greg Osby, Joe Lovano, Shannon LeClaire, John Lockwood, Drew Gress, George Garzone, Jamey Haddad, and Hal Crook.

After being kept busy by their own individual pursuits, around Boston, the three began playing sessions which quickly became rehearsals, acutely honing a unique vision that is fully realized in live performance. Matador plays the second sunday of every month at the Outpost in Cambridge, Massachusetts and tours regularly in the US and Canada.

This is literally right around the corner from my house. How about some additional info? Cover charge? BYOB (bring your own beverage)? How many people usually attend? Etc.

Byob
No cover charge but donations accepted
I've never been, but from photos I've seen it looks like anywhere from 20-50 people come out but don't quote me on that.

Gabe, the guy that throws the shows is very cool.

^^Gabe - don't know how you're getting these acts for a measly donation, but keep it up...and I would gladly pay to see:

YES, its donations, I have a spread of food and wine, and BYOB is cool.
Its all about listening and celebration diverse music.
Justareviewer: Its all about word of mouth with these musicians, and they all wanna come back and they so.
sad thing is I cant handle all the show proposals, I could have a show every week if I could afford it

THANKS FOR THE INTEREST

Gabe

pardon the incoherencies on the last post

Gotta be honest: have always wanted to go (so many of these shows sound just incredible -- house shows are almost too cool to be happening in Toledo!), but have been reluctant because, well, i'm old.

Question: Can a gray-headed boomer show up and not feel completely out of place?

All are welcome!

I understand, only out of place sitting with a few other gray-headed bommers.
the mix is about as diverse as the music itself
many people have'nt made it out, simply because of the "house show" and the unknown "scene"
I think you'd have a good time

I think a bunch of us who have always wanted to , but are hesitant because we don't know anyone or whatever, should plan to go and meet up there.
