Well Toledo is down two more individuals. My wife and myself have moved to another state. Both of us have MBA's and varying undergrad degrees, but Toledo had little to offer us. My wife has been either unemployed or greatly underemployed for the last 8 years. And although I maintained employment in a job I did not care for, it was all but impossible to find suitable employment in other areas I was qualified to work in. In addition to the employment situation our house lost 75-85% of its value in the past 8 years as well. We decided that there was absolutely no reason to stay in Toledo, or even Northwest Ohio. I'll probably keep monitoring this forum, mostly out of habit, and I am interested in what happens to Toledo, if things had been different we would not have moved.
Leaving Toledo

Ok, if your house lost 85% of its value, you have a lot more issues going on than being in Toledo. If true though, I will happily take it off your hands if it's still on the market! I think just about any house in the country would be worth it at 15 cents on the dollar!

Holy crap. Where was your house?

Good luck to you roygbiv.
It's quite a coincidence that you posted this today after you had already moved, because I just had a friend ask me this morning if I knew anyone who would be qualified for 2 job openings. (Both senior business positions that it sounds like you and/or your wife may have been potentially qualified for.)
my house has lost 35% +/- 5% over said duration.

As far as the county auditor is concerned, our appraised value fell by almost 40 percent from 2008 to 2012 (West Toledo / Franklin Park area). A smaller bungalow across the street that sold for $88K around 2005 went for $43K last year.

c-ya shooter. "yeah, we're outta here. This place doesn't offer squat for people with our kinda talent". Your perrogative, you dictate your own selling price, can't blame ya for that......just kinda odd that you found it neccessary to post publicly.

All the big companies around town are hiring. Especially IT, engineering and finance folks. They each list about half their open spots on their web sites and they have a bunch they are only going their recruiters.

Sounds about right. (One of the positions I mentioned above is a Senior Controller position with an engineering firm.)
roygbiv, I don't know that I've seen you around this site very often. Had you ever posted anything about this before you'd hit your breaking point? It seems a few people who have spoken up on the matter already could have helped point you guys in the right direction before it was too late.
Just curious, did you sell your house? Was it a short sale? Did you walk away from it? I work out of state, and commute back to Toledo being that I am in a specialized field and have an advanced certification. The best job for me was in a bigger market. But I am tied here by two homes, so I am always curious how people get around the home issue when they bail.
Johio83- I don't post frequently but I have posted quite a bit over the years. I actually believe that one of my threads on Cornerstone church is the longest thread on here (it was actually eventually made into two threads).
Best of luck to you roygbiv - I hope you find success and happiness!

The odds are in your favor that you're in a better place now. Good luck to you.
I'm waiting for the mrs to complete her education, then we are probably out too.
I really liked toledo when I first moved here, but everytime I start feeling positive about the place, it jumps up and kicks me in the netherlands.

I didn't mean to sound as nosy as I do. Netherlands. LOL.
Justread- We haven't ruled out a short sale, or walking away. Short sale would still leave us on the hook for quite a bit of money assuming our house sells like others in the neighborhood.
Thanks historymike for the trophy, I had one thread that went really really long, but most had very few responses. And that thread wasn't my proudest moment, that would have been when I indicated that I wasn't saying Opal Covey was crazy, but that if she isn't she is certainly on the waiting list.
BulldogBuckeye- made it public, mostly because I actually like Toledo, and would have liked to stay, but it just wasn't a reality. And I know Toledo keeps losing more and more people all the time, and hope that something can be done to try and keep some from leaving.
Thanks. I didn't mean to pry. I have one that would be the same way. So I bide my time with it. It's currently cheaper to keep it than bring a bunch of money to the table to sell it. But the responsibility and that of the one that I live in keeps me here. So I drive A LOT. Been doing it for five years and it is getting old.
Out of curiosity and educational analysis what tier school is your MBA and your wife's MBA from. It has been my analysis that an MBA beyond a tier one school holds little value unless attained for a specific purpose (i.e. current employer requires it for career advancement). Top tier schools generally require a few years of work experience before allowing admittance while the others take on those fresh out of a bachelors program. The end result is an individual holds a degree with little perceived value and is an over qualified candidate educationally, while being under qualified experience wise. The business perception is I don't want to pay more for an individual lacking real experience. And they definitely don't want to spend a year training an over qualified MBA candidate to be used as a stepping stone to another employer a year or two out.
Our local institutions are failing in emphasizing internships to a greater degree. A student should be leaving with a minimum of three real internships for a body of work experience and potential relationships leading to future work.
We need less MBA and law degree paper mills and a greater number of advance degrees in engineering and science along with a lot more entrepreneurial activity.
Toledo may not provide the opportunity you need but it does provide a tremendous opportunity for entrepreneurs. Low physical asset costs and low labor costs.
I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and hope the MBA's you hold are from UM or OSU.

I was wondering the same thing, MrGlass419, but didn't want to ask.
So many schools are churning out MBAs that most aren't even worth the paper they are printed on. Unless one is getting the MBA from one of the elite b-schools, it's almost not even worth it.
(Exception being if your employer wants you to have it for a promotion and pays the tuition. Then at least you get a short term benefit from it.)

Roy, please let us know how your job search is going in the new place. Or maybe you both are already employed? I see a lot of low-level service jobs around here, nothing with any benefits anymore ...
Our MBA's are from Heidleberg. My wife found a job and moved before I moved, I have just started my search, but the prospects look better already.
MBA from Heidleberg is commendable roygbiv. It takes a lot of work and dedication. Good luck in your career.

Congratulations on your academic pedigree. Heidleberg is significant, and I'm sure it will help you build a better future for you and your family. Best of luck to you in your new home.
It's very hard to stay in Toledo anymore. Kids are also leaving to find opportunities. Good luck to you and your family, Roygbiv.

roygbiv- Thank you for the info, in follow up were the degrees directly after attaining a bachelors? What were your employment situations going into your MBAs? Were you in a job corresponding to your bachelors degree that you were satisfied with for a couple years? I appreciate your input as I try to advise others on educational decisions and trade offs.
Glad to hear your wife was able to find a position more suitable.

Mrglass419- Both of us received our MBA's after being in the workforce for some time (and a number of years past our undergrad degrees). My wife worked in Marketing and some advertising, I did not work in a business related field although I did do quite a bit of team building, and project management, and for the past 7 years owned my own business. We both returned for our MBA's to expand our career options, and started at a time when MBA's were writing their own tickets (average starting was $100K) by the time we actually got our degrees MBA's were a dime a dozen, and we found ourselves over qualified for a lot of jobs we were interested in, and under qualified for most of the others (at least for the Toledo area).
