If I'm correct that is not far from where the off duty officer killed an armed assailant attempting to rob him late at night a month or so back. Anyone know how bad this section of town is becoming? I'm a few miles West of there but have noticed changes in my neighborhood for the worse. I know when I have driven down Sylvania Avenue past Upton to visit a relative recently I notice my instincts have been more on alert due to the people I saw around the streets. In other words, locking my door....

One of the local news stations did a story on that recently - think it might have been channel 11?

They didn't specify where the store was - just said it was a "Family Dollar in West Toledo."

My stomping grounds too. Going downhill. Was talking to my neighbor the other day and she had stories of punks walking into her garage and stealing bikes not once, not twice, but three times this summer. if my house wasn't so far underwater I'd be out of here in a heartbeat. Not liking this as a place to raise my 6 and 4 year old. We are doing the best we can.

Yeah this is sort of my stomping grounds as well. I drive by that store every morning.

THUGS EVERYWHERE around there. I hate it!

The further you go east down Sylvania, the worse the neighborhoods get. If you look at a map of foreclosures, you will see that people are fleeing the area like crazy.

I was fortunate to sell my home in the Sly/Jackman area but if I couldn't of done so I would have walked.

Crime is much worse than people think.

The progressive destruction of a once nice city. The rapid spread of "thug" malignancy.

Keep feeding the thug families. Keep handing out free stuff to the human cancers. More baby thugs in training. More 10 year olds having baby thugs in the ghetto. More obese baby mamas getting their handouts from thug-in-chief's stash.

I despise what the progressive social engineers have done to our culture.

The minute the "hip hop" crowd moves in the area...bye bye civilization.

yea, I'm near detroit and sylvania and it's hoorible. Within last 3 months, they've raided a local body shop for running a drug house there. One street nearby has numerous cars with people inside just sitting in driveways and on street at night. For what, I do not know.
The dollar store story seemed to me like an inside job. Not an employee but maybe a former one or friend of one because they knew exactly when to rob the place.

Sad to think it has only been a small period in history that civilized populations haven't had to live in walled cities. Will we be forced to return to that model out of necessity?

I'm not politically correct nits, actually I have little respect for PC but your post concerning [thug = black] made me look up the definition.

The most common definition of "thug" seems to be: a common criminal, who treats others violently and roughly, often for hire. In this regard I have probably misused the word thug at some points in my life.

I think a new word needs to be established - at least I need to find one for myself that describes those common traits that are often found in youth and street loiters in areas where my instincts are on alert and I recognize that I am in an area where crime and drug use are more common. I do not consider race part of the equation for the word I am searching for as I know countless drug addicts of every origin and criminals of all races though I can't say I have frequent associations with the more violent members of society.

What that word is I can't quite put my finger on but it would make things much simpler. Suggestions and input welcome.

Ruffian, Hoodlum, Hooligan, Scoundrel, Delinquent, Rapscallion ?

I tend to call them as I see them. Idiots.

Rapscallion ftw.

I had just as many problems from white trash as I did any other ethnicity, hip hop is just the idiot's flavor of choice. I don't hate hip hop because it's associated with black folk, but because I could no longer take the F word and bass being pumped into my house 24/7.

And before you get all PC with me associating hip hop with idiots, if you find joy in music that glories drug trade, violence, physical and mental abuse of females, and "thug life" in general, you best check yo self before you wreck yo self.

Call me old fashioned but I would never say (nor let my kids say) "Move bitch, get out the way" to my wife so I will not let that kind of music into my home. My wife is a wonderful woman and my greatest treasure, she is not a bitch or a hoe. Why would I allow music that would demean her role model as a woman/mother/and provider for our family?

My family doesn't consume violent, profanity filled, oversexed cinema or music not because the Bible or preacher says it's bad but because we don't lead violent, profanity filled, or oversexed lifestyles. Doesn't mean closing yourself off the to the world around you nor does if give me the ability to tell Upso that he can't consume it, but it's just not the type of energy I wish to have in my life.

Garbage in/garbage out.

Would you allow your husband to refer too you with the terms spoke about with females in that music? Would you allow him to treat you like his "bottom bitch"? Well you just sang along with the lyric on the car radio, what the big deal?

I'm sorry I'm just amazed how females can shake their ass to something but then go, "YOU BETTER NOT CALL ME A BITCH!!!"

We raise our son's listening to that garbage but then wonder why they don't have respect for their future wives. Let them watch music videos that depict females as nothing but sexual objects or things to be controlled but then expect little Johnny to be an upright father.

It's not as though hip hop is the only music that contains lyrics that might be demeaning to women. There are just as many hard rock and heavy metal songs that could fall into that category as well.

Anyhow, my kids are being raised in a loving home with both mom & dad. They have regular contact with both sets of grandparents who have been married 40+ years, great-grandparents who have been married 60+ years, and a pleathora of extended family members in long-term happy marriages.

Do I stream that genre of music for my kids 24/7? No. It's not even something I listen to all the time. (And you can't lump all of the songs in that genre together - just as with other genres of music, there are some songs and artists that have more offensive material, and others who don't.)

However, if my kids inadvertently heard a song lyric somewhere, the daily behaviors they are seeing modeled in their parents, extended family, neighbors, and friends' parents would still carry more weight with them than one line from a song.

I agree and understand your argument and I have no issue with adults listening to what they choose too, I doesn't make you a bad person. But I noticed a mother trying to keep her little hellion of a son from wrecking the Kroger @ Miracle Mile and he said "f*ck you bitch". I giggled at her calamity then as I took my groceries to the car I noticed the same family leaving, music loud enough to wake the dead, with lyrics something close to "you aint nohting but a bitch hooked on my jock and the rock", doesn't take much to put two and two together.

If it's just "music and words" I guess it would be ok to change Mother's Day to "Day for that trick who played with my pop's goodie sack". I mean it's just words right? Whats the big deal?

Sad state of what we think of ladies this days.

It all goes back about 25 years right?

Clearly the source of all this anti-woman rap would be the misogynistic influence of DJ Jazzy Jeff on The Fresh Prince with 1987's "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble."

As soon as that area is cleared of taxpayers, Toledo will be a mini-Detroit. Unfortunately, that will result in tax rates rising a lot for the taxpayers still living in the city to pay for services.

The "middle class" that's being pushed to poverty by the wealthy who are happy to push the "thug life" on us via the media they control and the companies they own that produce the crap they want us to consume and thereby make them and their shareholder buddies wealthier.

It's all part of the consumerism pushed upon us as well as the effort to keep people in the dark about said consumerism. Play to a certain segment of the population (young men who are thinking with their dicks) that yes, if one buys the right things and acts in the right way, one can get "bitches" galore. Also that one's status in that segment is based on how much "bling" one has.

People need to read some fucking psychology and sociology books and studies. Hell, you'd be surprised at how effective the banking industry has been with "rewards" credit cards. Yes, you too can earn rewards points if you just charge everything from a pack of gum to your utility bills to your rewards card (which runs at a higher interest rate than a normal card), and even if you pay the balance off monthly, the banks are collecting it all on the back end with the merchant transaction fees. But actually reading that stuff and thinking about it is too hard. Best get back to watching the crap that's on TV.

1.) Pay off your bill monthly, like a responsible person, and you don't have to worry about interest.

2.) Be responsible and have low rates on all your cards should you need to spread payments.

3.) Yep, banks make money on interest and merchant transaction fees. It's called business--I charge you for using my service. And the marketplace has decided that's OK. The convenience has outweighed the cost. I don't see very many merchants giving me 4% off when I use cash, so the price is what the price is. We're not turning back the clock.

The real crime is that discharging a lot of debt in bankruptcy has been made extremely difficult, if not impossible, thanks to financial industry lobbying. That just gives license to bank(er)s to give irresponsibles a $20000 credit card, have 'em rack up debt, then be a slave paying it back. Credit must be earned. Start at $1000 and work your way up. And you know what...if you bottom out, the bankers lose short term, but know not to give you credit or credit cards (or a bank loan, home loan, personal loan) for the next 7 years. They don't have to take the risk.

You know, seven years...like in the old fashioned days before those practices were deemed sexist, racist, ___ist by every political hustler coming down the street...

May I point out that your assertion on point 3 is based on faulty assumptions? Many merchant agreements with payment processors forbid a "cash discount" incentive being offered. This only started going away when they gave some teeth to the consumer protection laws and started investigating the banks recently. So the reason you weren't getting cash discount is because the merchant had the choice of either a) taking credit cards and getting more business or b) being cash only and losing business. Also, don't forget the other thread of "my bank won't do business with my business any more because they don't want to deal with cash".

I think that we may be able to bring this back around to the topic again, coward. While it is cute for you to parrot the disclosure demand of the liberals who don't understand how the economy works, my effective tax rate is nunya.
You can have another of my opinions instead: my opinion is that a flat tax is the only fair tax. I think that if we stopped the social engineering of welfare and gubment handouts, and we stopped growing the government we could probably make that rate right about 15%. That way, you, and me, and Mitt Romney who paid more last year ($2,800,000) than you will likely earn in your lifetime (is resentment the source of your psychosis?)will all pay the same "rate" and you will be happy.
Now... how will it help the topic of this thread? If we stop disincentivizing productivity and rewarding the propagation of ignorance, laziness and apathy; (after a short but violent crime wave), things will normal back out after a generation or two. The current thug fools would have nothing but crime. So, we'll need our prison capacity for about 20 more years. Then we can cut back.
"Richie Rich" (who has the ability to flee that you do not even comprehend) will stop moving assets and investments offshore to protect them from the socialist movement at work in our federal government due to leftover hippies and malcontents who surround the failing president.
My tax returns would depress you and I both, unfortunately. Especially last year. My God.
