The inner city madness continues...

The Klan never caused this much terror among colored people. They are constantly shooting each other. Even children.

I haven't seen it specifically stated anywhere that the shooters were black.

Yes, I realize that it is statistically likely that this was black-on-black crime. However, that hasn't been confirmed at this time to the best of my knowledge.

It's one thing to make an observation about statistical odds. Quite another to start talking about how "they" are always shooting each other and to compare it to the Klan.

Yikes.

Star56-What is the point of that comment? Are you arguing for or against something or just declaring some affiliation and/ or moral superiority. Are you thinking about building a wall or just a declaration of racial superiority? Is it possible that the crimes are more location based that racially based and that inner cities, no matter who they are populated by, are often affected by this sort of behavior? Is the KKK less evil because inner city thugs are also stupid? Does this have any effect on your daily life? why do you keep linking to the front page of the Blade like you are breaking some sort of news we all saw this morning?

Please take your time addressing each question individually, I am probably not the only TT'er that is interested in what makes you tick.

As I type this two of my best friends sit feet from me....both are colored folks.

Mom2....I don't get it. "They" ARE always shooting each other. Chicago, Philadelphia, Toledo. Seriously, people of color murdering each other on a nightly basis. Black people know this and don't engage in any politically correct analysis. They know their community is self destructing.

Imagine if a group of white racists were murdering black people at the rate that black people kill each other! That is my point. The Klan never racked up the kills of the colored community that they have done to themselves.

Would you ask your 2 best friends if the murders were a racial defect or if the people that were involved in this crime are more a product of their environment and economic class? Not all racists hate everyone from a race. You may not think you are a racist, but, man, you sure sound like one, and not just from this thread.

Suburbanites have no problem with the modern day crime plantation that our cities have become. You know kids being born into a life of failure is fine as long as there is a strip of downtown where they can enjoy a 100 dollar diner and catch a game.

They mutter something about "personal responsibility" while they sip their 6 dollar mocha.

Kind of weak to play the victim role after you chose the word "colored."
If you want to make an intellectual point on an uncomfortable topic, maybe you would have better luck choosing terms which weren't thrown out 50 years ago.
Honestly, it will be very hard to take anything that you post seriously after reading "colored."
And I don't disagree that there is a ghetto problem. There is a BAD ghetto problem, and the culture that feeds it seems to be increasing.
It is not sad that your post made people uncomfortable, it is sad that you were either so clueless or trolling so hard that you felt it necessary to use language that would distract everybody.

-Homer Simpson.

Meanhwhile, 85% of white people read on the internet that there is 400% more murder among blacks.

I'm making the stats say something? I posted them as face value.

When it comes to race on race violence/murder all races share similar ratios. Yet there's no outrage or racialized debate about "white on white" violence. Instead, the myth and associated fear of "black on black" crime is sold as a legitimate, mainstream descriptive and becomes American status quo.

The term "black on black" crime is a destructive, racialized colloquialism that perpetuates an idea that blacks are somehow more prone to violence.

posted by SensorG on Aug 10, 2012 at 04:22:06 pm     #

It was a Simpsons joke, popular among statisticians, newspeople and oddly, IT guys. Let's move on if you didn't get it.

Why don't "we" talk about "white on white" crime? How much exactly do we or do we not talk about it? What study do you cite?

You are wrong that black on black crime is not a real concern, especially and not surprisingly among blacks. I disagree that the term "black on black" has more "destructive" power or is "racialized."

You may be an authority on many things, but you are way out in left field on this one.

Your opinion on face value is worth one opinion. An opinion that facts don't support in this case.

But hey, maybe you have spent more time discussing this exact issue with black people than I have. And I have A LOT.

Notice that I did NOT suggest that black people are somehow by nature more violent, or that white people are not. There are serious problems that I won't assign blame for, but exist in american black culture. Welcome to the discussion.

The Klan never caused this much terror among colored people. They are constantly shooting each other. Even children.

Truly an unfortunate choice of words, but it's a bit late to rearrange them into something else.

So.

Surfing over to that invaluable font of thrice verified information, Wikipedia, I discovered that:

Race and crime in the United States

A United States Department of Justice report which surveyed homicide statistics between 1974 and 2004 stated that of the crimes surveyed, 52.2% of the offenders were Black. A 2010 United States Department of Justice report which surveyed homicide statistics during the year of 2010 reports that the 49% of all murder or manslaughter arrests were of white individuals. 48% of murder or manslaughter arrests were of black individuals. An outdated report 5 years earlier on overall crime from 1976-2010 stated that "most murders are intra-racial" with 86% of White murders committed by Whites, and 94% of Black murders committed by Blacks. However, the document does not provide any details concerning what races or ethnicities are included in the designations "White", "Black", or "Other Races", and there may be validity issues to the report due to the fact that many police departments did not report or maintain records on the race of offenders and victims until the 1990s.

So there. I also discovered that, if you believe Wikipedia:

Incarceration in the United States by Race

The prison population in 2009:

Male Prisoners
Hispanic: 442,000 or 22%
White: 693,800 or 35%
Black: 841,000 or 43%

Female Prisoners
Hispanic: 32,300
Black: 64,800
White: 92,100

Which proves inconclusively that there are more black men in prison than whites or Hispanics.

Given that I've been accused by several users on this message board of being a racist, I will also add that on a more personal note I was given the following scenario a little while back and asked to make a choice and then defend that choice. Here it is:

Your wife runs out of gas on the corner of Trailer Trash Row and Cocaine Alley. Her cell phone doesn't work, so she must walk to a service station.

One block to the North is a service station, but there is a group of unsupervised Black youth lounging around on the corner. One block to the South is a service station, but there is a group of unsupervised White youth lounging around on the corner. One block to the West is a service station, but there is a group of unsupervised Hispanic youth lounging around on the corner. One block to the East is a service station, but there is a group of unsupervised Asian youth lounging around on the corner.

All groups look to be the same age and number. Which way should she go?

My only question was this: How are they dressed?

People play the race card all the time and tread carefully around phraseology and verbiage least a racial slur creep unseen into their language and offend someone. I'm not so careful these days, if I ever was, but the thing I notice is that no one is talking about race and economic inequality, poverty, and the possible relationship between these things and violent crime and gang activity.

"Colored" is an outdated word and those of you with a brain know that it depends on the context of how you use the word as to it's intention.

Star56 isn't ignorance, dumb or even trolling, he's simply a racist. The uses any crime committed by a black person as justification for is bigotry and giving a pass to the KKK.

You use the word "colored" and then smugly sit back and pretend that's a word used in good faith.

Do you call Jewish people "Jew" too? "I was talking to the Jew down the street." "That guy Jew'd me!"... again context.

Are these acceptable to you too?

So silly. Sticks and stones people. You've all been brain washed by society that a simple word can cause so much emotion. For what? Nothing.
Words change meaning so often that giving any word such power to cause so much emotion is ridiculous. The biggest example is using the word "nigger". It is considered offensive and horrible for a white person to use it, but hearing it in songs, tv, etc. is o.k. if you're black. I don't get it.
"Colored" is an old word used to describe "black" people. Even though it's now considered "wrong", it still is part of the biggest pro-black organization. Confusing. Negro is another word that is now considered wrong. Until you hear that some baseball team or even MLB is honoring the Negro Baseball League.
How is anyone supposed to focus on more important things in life if so much bickering, time, and emotion is used on who uses what word, when?
People who act or get "shocked" over words are fueling the problem. Let it go already. We all have had experiences in our lives that words can emotionally cut us right to the bone. We all have them words, but we aren't all walking around with a list of "forbidden" words on our shirts so people don't use them to offend us.
Sticks and stones people.

What about the term; "People of Color"? I heard it used on "The View" recently, and there were no objections, even from Behar or Whoopi. The problem is that the designations are always changing. Someone should publish a dictionary for those who are not hip to the ever changing lexicon.

Forget the word. The word is just a symbol. It is also something that most of us associate with being a racist. By itself, it's a dated term, like calling a sofa a "davenport". By itself, we all would have had a laugh at star56's expense for being so utterly out of touch. Used in conjunction with "The Klan" and " They are constantly shooting each other" and it becomes a more fully fleshed out racist insinuation.

Again, I challenge hockeyfan, or star56 to explain the point of the original post, and the contribution this makes other than to support prejudiced stereotypes.

Years ago, "colored" was used to distinguish blacks from whites. And not for charitable reasons. "White" was "normal" and "colored" was the "other."

Today, "of color" is used to recognize the diversity of people. It is often used by people who are not white to describe people who are not white. "Of color" includes blacks, but also allows room for non-whites of many shades.

Is this really so hard to glean from the context? Or do people play Pollyanna just to be difficult?

posted by justread on Aug 10, 2012 at 08:32:22 pm     #

Support prejudiced stereotypes? You do know why they call them stereotypes, don't you? Because they usually are true.
Just like saying "black", "negro", "african american", people like chicken and watermelon, white people are said to have, "no rhythm" and can't dance.
You know what, I've seen many examples of both. I'm white and can't dance and do not have rhythm and you know what? I find it funny. I laugh at myself.
I cannot speak of what the original post's meaning was, but I understand what they were trying to say.
First, the KKK is famous for being the biggest enemy of "black, negro, african american" people. They are also said to have killed many, mostly in south. So when the statement is made in the first post, it sounds like there are so many black on black murders that it just may surpass the number of murders the KKK has committed.
What is the confusion over that statement?

If the statement said, "The dancing was so bad at the wedding reception, it looked like a bunch of white people trying to dance." That would be funny.

It's making something out of nothing. If those of you who responded like star56 just shot the pope, wouldn't have done anything, this thread would probably be dead right now except for maybe one of my sarcastic stupid attempts at humor. But now, it's snowballing into a real barnburner.

In the 1950's and also in 2012, white people would prevent black people from using public drinking fountains and bathrooms. Sometimes the police were called.

posted by justread on Aug 10, 2012 at 08:53:29 pm     #

yep, I was accused of being a racist. That's the only reason the police responded and responded as fast as they did. Which shows again how powerful the term "racist" is. You can't get a cop to respond to a robbery or shooting quickly, but mention "racist", and they come flying.
And what is the punishment for falsely accusing a white guy of being a racist against blacks? Absolutely nothing. Not even an apology.

I guess I can see that. I just can't see people getting labeled this and that over a word or using a word. I have heard words used in every which way and for me, it doesn't label a person. Actions speak louder than words.
I know true racism exists and it is sickening to think of. But being called a racist for using a single word or words is something I don't agree with. Racism should be used to describe the action, not labelling a person who uses a word.
