A new format for WOHO

http://www.toledoblade.com/TV-Radio/2012/08/07/Talk-Radio-1470.html

FINALLY.

I was wondering when one of the many broadcasting companies operating in this market was going to bring a Conservative perspective to our AM airwaves...

A local morning talker would be nice,,but don't count on it. Buck$ you know. And fixing the rusting antenna farm and low power transmitter would be better. I understand they have a new location that would allow that, so stay tuned.

Dave Ramsey is the best part of that line up.

posted by slowsol on Aug 13, 2012 at 07:42:45 pm     #

The weekday mostly conservative syndicated line-up consists of Don Imus from 6 to 9 a.m., Geraldo Rivera from 9 a.m. to noon, Mike Huckabee from noon to 3 p.m., Dave Ramsey from 3 to 6 p.m., Mark Levin from 6 to 9 p.m., John Batchelor from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and "Red Eye Radio" from 1 to 6 a.m.

"Talk Radio 1470 is promised to be this region's foremost talk radio station delivering unbiased, balanced, and compelling content," said Cumulus Media Market Manager Matt Spaulding.

Fucking spineless pussies at the Blah didn't call that one out.

This isn't "unbiased and balanced", it's more right-wing bullshit being falsely advertised as such, RIGHT FROM THE START.

AC, I knew you'd be pleased.

Cant argue with AC on this one Sohio.

If it was balanced there would be some liberals in the line up....there are not. If it was unbiased you would have moderate commentators in there. That lineup has neither why not just call it conservative talk radio and get over it. Maybe Matt Spaulding does not understand the meaning of biased/balanced. Did he go to TPS?

Don't blame TPS, it's what happens when you go into marketing. You get a frontal lobotomy and all ability to reason rationally goes away.

Relax, glasscityguy. I'm pretty sure Sohio was joking with his original post. You know, sarcasm. View historymike's comment for details. According to this comment, Sohio is a former employee of WSPD or Clear Channel, so I believe Sohio was making a humorous jab at the fresh, syndicated talk radio content on WLQR.

I wish WLQR would have stayed ESPN radio, since their AM signal goes further/farther than their FM version on 106.5, at least during the daytime. AM 1470 became a sports talk radio station around 1997 when it was affiliated with One on One Sports Radio. One on One got purchased by Sporting News Radio. Then at some point about 12 years ago, WLQR became an ESPN radio station.

Thanks, jr. Yes, I was being sarcastic.

And yes, I worked for CC from the time they took over until 1999; although I was mostly over on the WIOT/WCWA side, I never did too much at WSPD.

My sarcasm comes mostly from disappointment. I am not a conservative myself, but I have no problem with WSPD airing conservative talk shows. They have been doing it for years, and it works for them. I just think it is sad that the stations that compete with WSPD choose to air the exact same stuff instead of something different. The case can be made that formats like liberal talk radio or AM oldies do not bring in the ratings like Rush and Hannity do; but then again, neither does second-rate conservative talk. 1470 will never beat WSPD. Nor will WCWA, for that matter. If they are going to air a less lucrative format, why not give us one that is a little different?

The odd thing is, CC DOES do this in other markets. Take Grand Rapids, Michigan. They own WOOD-AM, which is sort of the equivalent of WSPD up there. They also own WTKG-AM, a far-less-listened-to talk station that airs both lesser-known Conservative talk shows not popular enough to be on the "big boy" station, along with liberal talk shows like Ed Schultz and Thom Hartmann. And this is in GRAND RAPIDS, a far more right-leaning city than Toledo is.

Personally, I think we deserve better. But that's just me.

And how did this thread wind up under politics? Seems like more of a "media" discussion to me...

AC and profanity...

There is no Left Wing talk radio because apparently left wingers don't listen to the radio and it's not profitable. I'm sure if their was money (the only political party these days) to be made from it someone would be exploiting that market.

The Thom Hartmann Show on Sirius Left can be a good listen now and then.

Don't be so sure about this.

In Madison, they have an FM liberal talk station, WXXM, that Clear Channel intended to switch over to sports-talk a few years ago. Community backlash was so great, CC backed down and kept it the way it was.

"Community backlash" doesn't mean a thing to radio operators. The only thing that does is money.

The well-publicized ratings and financial failure of Air America makes operators gun-shy about putting lib talkers on the air. Conservative talk has been and continues to be a proven commodity. Sorry, that's a fact. Sports talk is another proven commodity--and now that it has moved permanently to the FM side, Cumulus is hedging their bets that another conservative talk station will make them more cash than the alternative.

Actually, I'd like to see a lib-talk station light up....if only to enjoy the WSPD/______ ratings and revenue battle. This area certainly elects enough (D)s to give it a shot...

Conservative talk works partly on the Howard Stern principle: a good number of people who hate it listen anyways just to hear what stupid, outrageous, inflammatory thing will be said next. Kind of hard to do that with liberal radio, because apparently "I think two homosexual who love each other should be allowed the same rights as everyone else to get married" and "I think insurance should cover birth control" just doesn't inflame right-wing sheeple like "Sandra Fluke is a slut" and "FAGS BURN IN HELL" do with the moderate to left. The right-wing sheeple just love El Rushbo and Glenn "Nazi Tourettes" Beck. The sheeple are hearing exactly what they want to hear and get all good and pumped up about it, and the moderate-left get good and pissed off at the misleading, inflammatory, hate-filled shit that gets pumped out to brainwash the stupid.

Of course, everyone forgot about Father Coughlin except the media corporations who figured out how to turn that history into money.

Because of me, or because of talk radio being conservative politics?
