This is what the Toledo Zoo needs...

I was visiting family down in Columbus and they took us to the Columbus Zoo to their waterpark. My family LOVED it there. It's such a great concept. The land where the former YMCA was located, the area to the right of the parking lot or across the street on the right side of the trail ( the triangle shaped area of land) would be perfect for a outdoor waterpark. I know it's a pipe dream but it's fun to day dream.

The YMCA was next to Woodsdale Park Between Blake and Woodsdale, on the north(west) side of the Trail. The triangle shape parcel that you show is much farther back toward downtown, and is on the opposite side of the Trail from the former YMCA.

Wyandotte Park has been there a long time, we took our kids more than 30 years ago. It's part of the zoo now? good move. always liked the Cbus Zoo.

also, I think that triangle piece of land is a brownfield, if not a super fund site. Jennite used to own it and dump there. In the past 2 years or so, a new stronger fence has gone up around it, and I think there's a sign. I'll look it up later.

It's a polluted shithole. Even now, I remember the smell of creosote when driving by with my parents in the 1970's.

Not a place to put a water park...unless you like your kids smelling like the railroad.

We didn't have waterparks when I was a kid, so we played on the railroad tracks and brownfields. We poured mercury out on the garage floor and played with the little puddles.

I remember playing in piles of coal near K of C park off of Secor in the 1970s.

^Amazing how we survived all that isn't it?

Ditto on playing with mercury. I had big pickle jars full of the stuff to play with. I'm now collecting social security. So far so good. You would have to eat that stuff to get sick from it. I crack up when the toxic waste crew shows up to clean up a broken mercury thermometer. Just sweep it up and toss it in the trash. Catch the little balls of mercury on a penny or a dime. End of story.

Everybody tries to add responsibility to the zoo. Cosi, Great Lakes Aquarium downtown, water park....let the zoo be a zoo. They do things extremely well the way they are.

Agreed, Molson. When I take my niece & nephew there, I won't even take them into the Nature's Neighborhood exhibit...it seems like a glorified playground to me, and we can go to a playground for free. I take them there to see some animals and hopefully learn something, not splash around in puddles. I like the way you put it: "let the zoo be a zoo." I think that sums it up well.

I would have never guessed that at the end of a week's time, this waterpark proposal would be more credible than the one that the city was backing.

Yeah too much responsibility like concerts and Christmas lights. LOL

Just pointing out that it's not uncommon and actually brings in more people than just those who want to see animals.

I just came back from Flagstaff and some of the highlights wer the Out of Africa Safari Park near Cottonwood, AZ and Bearizona in Wiliams, AZ. Both were very cool and offered unique experiences.
