Mayor Bell profiling

http://www.toledoblade.com/Police-Fire/2012/08/25/Police-target-Smith-Park-Mafia.html

Honestly our mayor is a breath of fresh air and I wish more politicians were like this guy. You don't have to agree with everything he has done, but he risked alienating a voting base in Toledo by privatizing trash service, stood up to his own fire union, and now states we're profiling because it makes sense. This guy doesn't pander to voting groups and does what he believes is right.

My vote for 4 more years and national Mayor of the year.

I'm a gun-toting, tea partying, talk radio junkie..and i like mayor bell, too. I hope he serves another term, though, when running, he said it was only for one term. But all politicians say that.

I voted for Mayor Bell in his first election. But I will not vote for him again. I'm uneasy about his secrecy over a lot of things his administration does.

The Department of Neighborhood scandal (including his niece) has really left a sour taste in my mouth for Bell.

He didn't really stand up to the fire union, but has done a few positive things. He has raised taxes and fees quite a bit, too.

I'll be voting for Lopez if she decides to run and I hope she does.

"The mayor also told the men that, yes, the police are profiling.

He said most of the people arrested for the shootings are black; most of the victims have also been black, the mayor said."

Heh heh..I was called a racist for pointing this fact out. Facts are something liberals have problems with.

I do not consider myself a liberal but I do care about those less fortunate families.

Black on black shootings have become a national problem and when you get gangs involved it spirals out of control. That is a fact. When public housing for the poor became a black ghetto that should have been a wake up call for everyone in government. But that did not happen and the problems just got worse.

A racist in my opinion is someone who cares not a whit about anyone except those that look like themselves. And this world is filled with lots of people who think that way.

I live in a neighborhood with mixed ethnic groups. As far as I know we have no problems getting along. We do have a couple of older folks (my age and older) who are unhappy but the rest of the neighborhood is just fine.

I voted for Bell. I'd kick myself in the nards before voting for him again. I can't really say he has done anything that impresses me, but has done a ton to piss me off (sold Toledo to China, more red light cameras, Crime cameras, Niece getting my $, Etc...)

If by Lopez you mean Anita Lopez the county auditor that would be good. I vote Pub 99% of the time. Lopez is the 1% I vote Dem. From what I can see she has done a good job. I have voted for her twice now.

I was ecstatic when Bell ran for mayor but I have not been happy with him. And may not vote for him in the next election, depends on who is running against him. But if Anita Lopez does run for Mayor, I will totally be for her. I grew up with her and her siblings and believe she will be the best next Mayor for Toledo.

He said most of the people arrested for the shootings are black; most of the victims have also been black, the mayor said.

It is undeniable that if Carty had said this, Toledo would be receiving a visit from Rev. Sharpton, Rev. Rose, or even Rev. Jackson by this coming Wednesday.

Just sayin'...

Erin- your comments are why I love what Bell has done. He sold Toledo to China? I drove by today, China hasn't moved the land overseas yet. You can't distinguish the difference between a country buying something or wealthy individuals purchasing in an attempt to get their wealth out of communist country for their own protection. We were previously unable to collect taxes or worse it was owned by our local government.

We finally have someone that doesn't listen to the usual Toledo non sense and isn't pandering for your vote.

I'm not a Toledo resident anymore so I will not comment on Mr. Bell's electability but he has been better than Carty and MUCH better than Sleepy McFord who got in on the Veterans Committee ballot.

A lot people’s perception of Bell verses Carty is from the fact you don’t have almost 6+ hours of radio dedicated to bashing him every day. No one calling him the equivalent of Carty “S for brains” Finkbeiner, for hours on end…

Look at Carty and the bike path. How much time and energy was spent by LeFebvre and Wilson bashing Carty’s proposed $600k for the Walbridge Park bike path. Hell they even used it as a center piece of their campaign for his recall.

Now you Bell spending $2.2 million on “upgrading” Promenade Park and other than using it bash a few counsel men, you haven’t heard a word. Bell gets a completely free pass from WSPD. Just like he got a free pass over the recent Southwyck train wreck or the neighborhoods department corruption.

If there was every an example of the “media” directly affecting public perception of an individual, look no further.

SensorG, The waste of money on the park was the last straw for me. I have to dirve crappy pothole filled streets everyday here in Ttown. How many more streets could have been repaved with that $2.2M.. And I agree that WSPD is giving Bell a much easier time than they did Carty. Bell deserve to be called out by WSPD just like Carty was.

Absolutely untrue. Don't know how much you listen , but I've heard plenty of criticism of the Mayor by both hosts you mention on both of these topics.

LeFebvre had plenty to say about the Promenade park issue when it was announced/proposed.

I don't mean this as sarcastically as it will undoubtedly sound, but: Does anyone really still listen to WSPD ....? I almost forgot they were still around until I glanced at this thread (which I don't mean to highjack -- sorry! But am sincerely curious about this.)

Does anyone really still listen to WSPD ....?

According to Arbitron ratings and the advertisers who spend thousands of dollars per year to reach a fairly affluent audience....yes.

posted by oldhometown on Aug 27, 2012 at 11:11:52 am     #   1 person liked this

LeFebvre spends way more time bashing Webb or Collin's vote or thoughts on the park upgrade than he does Bells.

Hell, it got so bad between Carty and LeFebvre over the bike path -

I do listen to WSPD, but will never shop any place LeFebvre or Wilson personally pimp for.

I'm more of the mindset of... if a local DJ has an opinion, who cares? It's not like Fred Lefebvre, Andrew Z, or anyone in that boat has the slightest bit of journalistic integrity. We aren't talking about Walter Cronkite here, these are two-bit loud mouths who get attention for the garbage they spew, not the intellectual gems they provide us with. I put just as much stock in their opinions as the drunk at the end of the bar ranting about social problems.

The drunk at the end of the bar isn't getting paid to share his opinion (or "the garbage [he] spews"). Fred--+1 on that score.

"Does anyone really still listen to WSPD ....?"

Do people still read newspapers, the printed kind that have to be held?

Erin, I agree. With all the other problems with streets, spending money for parks is wasteful. Lopez is a rare Democrat vote on my ballot.

Gee, my roof has a hole in it...so instead of fixing that, why not spend the last few bucks I have to plant flowers in the yard?

luvtoledo, I regularly listen to WSPD, and I they have been hesitant to criticize Bell. Especially since they still criticize Ford, and Carty just about every day. Wilson is more guilty of the double-standard than Lefebvre.

I love getting my newspaper. I also pick up the USA Today if I am out and about.

I do all the puzzles in the paper to keep my mind active. I do Sodoku, crossword, word jumble etc. every day. My husband works on picture puzzles. So far we can still find our way around the house.

I have no idea what her policies would be like as mayor, but her office....by a wide margin....is the most professional office we have downtown. By far.

Courteous. Responsive. She and any people she has working with her don't treat constituents like they are sand fleas (although I'm sure the temptation is there, sometimes). Very rare.

I listen to WSPD. Brian Wilson is quickly getting on my nerves though. Not because of his message, which I agree with most the time, but his delivery, His little quips and pet names for stuff is irritating to me and I've about had enough. I'm already at work when Fred comes on so I don't get to listen to him often enough.

posted by Erin on Aug 27, 2012 at 08:42:00 pm     #

I agree on Wilson being grating in his delivery. I am philosophically almost 100% aligned with Wilson, but man he is not easy to listen to. The "stream of consciousness" delivery gets to be a bit too much.

So getting the thread back on track, I appreciated that Bell isn't afraid to toe controversial lines of political incorrectness to do what he knows needs to be done to help the city. I was critical of his election when it happened ("what qualifies a fire chief to run a city?" viewpoint), but I have become a fan of his since then.

posted by Johio83 on Aug 28, 2012 at 09:51:17 am     #

That whole business with his niece getting plum jobs/contracts for city business is not going to look good in the next election cycle.

His biggest opponent for mayor today is Collins and the local radio station is wasting little time bashing him every chance they get.
