I surprisingly get this a lot. A friend of a friend is coming to downtown Toledo and needs a good restaurant recommendation.
I don't know these people and try to recommend a good mix of locales.
Can you helpful folks give me some ideas?
Thanks in advance
Where do you suggest friends of friends dine in Toledo

Do they like imitation Mexican restaurants?

that is why these request are difficult.i don't actually know them. I could send them to an imitation ethnic restaurant and have no real guilt about it.... On the other hand, it would make our wonderful city look poorly.
Sure. All these are good:
Restaurant Review: Mac and Tong's Place
4330 West Central Avenue; Toledo, OH 43615-1669
Restaurant Review: Maumee Bay Brewing Company at The Oliver House
27 Broadway; Toledo, Ohio 43604
Restaurant Review: AMango
5228 Monroe St.; Toledo, OH
Restaurant Review: Avenue Bistro
6710 W. Central Ave.; Toledo, OH
Restaurant Review: The Dégagé Jazz Café
301 River Road; Maumee, OH 43537
I wouldn't hesitate to send my friends and family to any of these places.
Beirut, Byblos, Real Seafood...always count on those three for a good meal.
Are they looking for dinner or lunch?
Grumpy's would be a good locally owned downtown spot to send someone for lunch. (You can find a pleathora of comments & reviews here.) However, they aren't open for dinner hours.

For a downtown recommendation I don't think you could go wrong with Registry Bistro. It definitely has an upscale modern feel that is lacking in the downtown restaurants (not to mention the majority of the city). And the food is top notch:

As for downtown, here are my four favorites:
Registry Bistro - trendy atmosphere, fantastic view, would definitely paint Toledo in a very positive light, but the cuisine can be a little on the adventurous side for some.
Table Forty 4 - in my opinion, the best choice if you know nothing about the people who will be dining there. Trendy, has a pretty well-rounded menu, and I've never had a meal there I didn't enjoy. Two downsides: service can be painfully slow (not always, but it's happened to me more than once), and if there is a band playing there that night, good luck trying to have a conversation.
PizzaPapalis - the best deep dish around. Also has a pretty good drink menu. The only downside is that, if you aren't down with the pizza/grinder/flatbread sandwich kind of food options, this probably isn't for you.
Tony Packo's - obvious. A Toledo classic, delicious hungarian dishes, and the hog dogs can be habit forming.
I dunno where "fantastic view" came from, I meant "fantastic food"
Actually, the Oliver House is a really good recommendation if you know nothing about what they'll be looking for. They'd have their pick from pretty much the whole dining spectrum, from Mutz (sports bar), the Cafe (bistro, sandwichs), Maumee Bay Brew Pub (casual), on up to Rockwell's (fine dining).
Rustic, Trapper's up in La Salle Michigan, north on Detroit stay on till you run into it.

Bay Shore Supper Club
I second this one.
The place is not fancy at all, but it is a great place to get our local lake fish (if you're into that "local flavor" sort of thing).
